Page 3: Boarders

. . . the onset of, the boom, the growth of surfing, spreading its wings, its vibe, its energy, its clothing onshore, into all 40 or so inland states into the lives of middle class ordinary people who have never caught a wave and who are now able to feel alive, to feel on top, a feeling like paddling into the sunset on a lake near the city. And now they can and they are catching waves behind boats, on flow wave machines and indoor wave pools. You, me, ourselves and the boards on our feet; the feeling of source, the manipulation of control and balance and the freedom of possibilities and imagination come to life. Some call it man made and artificial; “it’s not like the real thing” they say; “nothing compares to real surfing” they argue; but for others it is the only thing they have, it is as close as they can get. It is our peace. It is our guide. It is our passion. It is your source.

And now it is the next best thing, more Americans are doing it than ever before. They are getting on top of boards! Skate-boards or snowboards or longboards or flow boards or paddle boards or kite boards or wakeboards. Boarders within borders. And so this is where we begin, a magazine, a network, a community of inland surf boarders that has come to life at the start of the 21st century. Dec. 21st was not the end of the world, only a new beginning, the start of a new age- the Age of Aquarius. And what better way to start off the new age than with a medium that will embody this age for years to come. An energy, a feeling come to life and embodied in our pages. A movement of Aloha with roots in the eternal that has spread its wings and moved inland and can finally surf within again.

Hurricane Sandy

Who? Cindy Stokes, 43 yo from Virginia Beach, VA. I love to SUP, Surf, and Tandem Surf.

What? Stand Up Paddle Boarding during Hurricane Sandy wearing Season-Five Women’s Barrier Long Sleeve Mock and Barrier Capris

Where?

Neighborhood in Windsor Woods, Virginia Beach

When? Hurricane Sandy, Oct 28, 2012

Why? During hurricane seasons, some portions of our neighborhood tends to flood to about 3 feet deep. The area I was paddling is a resi-dential street. Since we were flooded in our neighborhood due to the hurricane, my husband and I decided to check out the flood zone and to see who’s car was stuck and perhaps we could help transport them with our paddleboards. Plus it was easy to maneuver with a paddle-board as opposed to a canoe. Even though I was getting splashed by some vehicles coming from behind, I continued to stay dry with my SeasonFive apparel. Not to mention comfortable and warm. SeasonFive apparel will even withstand Hurricane Sandy!

Tara & Travis Pynn had it all. Tara, an elite photographer (ArrowoodPhotography.com) and Travis, a GoPro executive, (the worlds leading wearable camera company) loved the outdoor life and spent most of their free time on the wa-ter. Newly married, the couple had moved from Sausalito (located on the northern tip of the San

Francisco Bay) to an even more water-central place on the coast, just 30 miles south of San Francisco.

“Our move to Moss Beach provided us with year-round access to the beach and the bay and, very importantly, we had a lot more room for our toys,” said Travis. One of the first local adopters of paddle boarding, Travis quickly enlisted his wife in the paddle lifestyle and the two of them have boarded their way through the beautiful ocean, bays and lakes that surround California. Life was good. But something was missing. Something small and furry with very big ears.

“Both of us had always wanted a dog but our lifestyle is so active, we needed a dog to fit us, rather than change our lives for a dog,” said Travis. While out for a paddle in the local harbor one foggy morning, Travis met a salty, old fisherman who was quietly sitting on the

edge of the dock with his dog. Travis instantly recognized the unique bat ears and smooshy face of a French Bulldog and some-thing clicked. As the fisherman told Travis of his adventures with his dog, whom he took everywhere, the dog gazed knowingly at Travis during the entire conversation.Travis beelined home to tell Tara about his other-worldly encounter and, within a week, she had researched 30 different French Bulldog breeders.French Bulldogs are small, squat dogs with a calm and pleasant demeanor. They love people and other animals and are extremely social. And, although French Bulldogs don’t swim well due to their heavy bodies and extremely short legs, they do have great balance and fit perfectly on a paddle board. Enter Chicken.

“The minute we saw a video of this puppy tearing around her yard on her tiny, little legs, we fell in love,” mooned Tara. “The breeder, Lisa Fernandez (SensationalBulldogs.com) was fantastic and made it easy for us to get our puppy.” Chicken -- named after the couple’s passion for everything chicken-related (Tara and Travis built a hawk-safe coop to house their seven chickens) and because people constantly asked if she was a pig, rabbit, or bat, anything under the sun BUT a chicken -- instantly became the center of the Pynn household.

Page 23: Boarders

“She was on a board before we let her walk the beach,” said Travis. Chicken wears a custom life vest from Kyjen Company and has become so comfortable on a paddle board that she’ll often fall asleep while Tara paddles her around.

Due to Tara’s prolific pho-tography and Travis’ endless supply of GoPro cameras, Chicken’s time on the water has been well documented.

Her Facebook page (facebook.com/PaddleChicken) went viral when she was

featured as the GoPro photo of the day and she was invited to sign the Facebook office Wall of Fame at the company’s corporate

site in Austin, TX. “Her paw print is right next to Willie Nelson’s signature.”“We’re starting to see lots of animals

out on the water with their owners -- dogs, cats, even a llama,” said Travis. “Chicken is a true water dog and such an

integral part of our life now, on and off the water. We don’t go anywhere without her.” “People always come up to us when we have Chicken,” said Tara. “She helps us slow down

and enjoy smelling the seaweed.”Check out Chicken’s calendar: www.zaz-

The 2012 Carbon US Flow Tour was a journey across the country, and even

into Canada, throughout the entire sum-mer. If you are not fully aware of what a FlowRider is, imagine mashing surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding all into one sport. Carving on a flow board is compared to riding down a hill on your snowboard. Flip tricks like the kickflip and 360 flips are not only possible, but also be-coming a more common occurrence from competitors. And of course if you need to cool down or feel like making some big sprays, there is over 50,000 gallons of water in a typical FlowRider Double. There truly is no other sport quite like flow boarding, and the sport continues to grow as more and more people are becoming aware of its existence.

The FlowRider is closed off to the wa-terparks normal patrons, but in return they are able to watch some of the worlds best riders do what they love to do. There are divisions ranging from Youth, Men’s and Women’s, and of course the Pro bracket. All riders are encouraged to enter these competitions; no matter your skill level, there is a division for you.

The tour began in Massanutten, Vir-ginia on June 2nd. Competitors from all over the country came to kick off the sea-son and a big step up in the body boarding division with young riders such as Andrew O’Connor, Andrew Shelton, and Nick Sanchez hoping to dethrone the previous tour champion, Nick Nguyen. Unfortu-nately, they would all prove to be unsuc-cessful (at least at this stop) with Nguyen starting off the stop strong with a 1st place finish. The same goes for last years flow board champion, Sean Silveira. Both Nguyen and Silveira were able to hold onto a clean sheet for the first few stops of the tour, up until one of them broke the cycle. The same goes for last years flow board champion, Sean Silveira. Both Nguyen and Silveira were able to hold onto a clean sheet for the first few stops of the tour, up until one of them broke the cycle.

At the California stops of the 2012 Car-bon US Flow Tour, none other than Chuck Wright beat Silveira. Both Silveira and Wright are locals to Fantasy Surf in Or-lando, Florida, so it would seem fitting that if anyone was to beat him that it would be one of his peers.

SANGER BOATSby Boarders Magazine

anger has been building boats under the radar since 1954. The mom and pops of boat building of all their parts under one roof in Fresno California, which just happens to be the perfect place with just the right climate for boat building.

Page 37: Boarders

M eanwhile Sanger has continued a tradition of craftsmanship for years all while doing

so without a focus on marketing and advertising. In fact this is one of Sanger’s first print publications and for many boaters due east of Nevada it will prob-ably be the first time they have ever heard the name. Today Sanger has shifted its focus to the growing wakesurfing market via Scott Pellaton, national sales Director and current barefoot world record holder. Wow, a boat company that is backed by a watersport enthusiast rather than a car salesman! This is a rare occurrence and definitely worth mentioning. Should not all boats be designed by avid boaters and surf-boards by surfers themselves?

A nd what do we like best about Sanger Boats? Besides the uncompromised power of

Indmar underneath the hood, the smooth ride and perfect wakes from its V hull, the DTS catalytic con-verters being a must for California emission stand-ards and its sleek new tower design . . . is the price. Sanger decided to keep its price down and focus on its boats and their quality and will continue to do so for years to come. This value pricing is accomplished by a modest marketing program without a high priced promotional team.

Ahead of it’s time

E ven before the popular need in the past year to design boats specifically towards the new

sport of wake surfing, Sanger and close neighbor Centurion have been posthumously doing so for years. Onset by the creation of a new model to its line, a near 24 foot, 102 inch beam of a beast also known as the V237LTX is equipped with a simple idea of using enlarged trim plates towards wake enhancement. Not only can you adjust the wake, longer or shorter, steeper or mellow, you can leave your boat weighted down and cruise to the other side of the lake if needed. This has created the most adjustable and versatile wake in the industry.

A ssuming that you learned river safety, are wearing all the proper gear, that you are with someone who has a little experience, and you have scoped out all the hazards in the section of river you are running then you must also have the courage to take

your first drop.

The first thing you are going to want to do is look at your stance. A neutral stance will give you stability from side to side and you are definitely going to want a little more stability dropping rapids. If you step back into a staggered stance you will get the side to side stability as well as front to back which is ideal for going through a rapid.

Make sure you have a decent amount of speed when approaching the drop. Now there are a few things you should do with your paddle to help you through the meat of the rapid. You can low brace or high brace to help you with balance. I like to use a high brace because when I need to take a stroke I am closer to the position I need to be in. When you high brace it is important to keep your elbow in so you don’t put yourself at risk of injury.

While you are in staggered stance you will find it more comfortable to take strokes on your open side. Using a J stroke will help you steer and keep the board straight. Play around with different strokes and use what works best for you. Make sure you are putting all your power into your feet which will also help you control the board. Don’t over think it.

Don’t over think making it through the rapid; let if feel natural and always look at where you want to go so that by the time you hit the rapid you will be looking past the rapid. If you are looking down at the rapid when you hit it, your balance will be thrown off. Congrats on making your first drop!

Paddle fast and take chances!

NSP ELEMENTS

Page 45: Boarders

These boards are modeled off of traditional longboards and feature a full nose, rounded pintail, and a generous well-balanced outline that’s both stable and responsive in a variety of surf conditions. The smooth relaxed rocker on the NSP Elements Funboard range features a little extra flip in the nose allowing you to paddle into waves with ease and confidently drop down the face without fear of nose diving. The vee bottom has been designed to maximize speed while allowing the board to turn and transition from rail-to-rail with minimal effort. A boxy full rail also adds to the overall forgiveness of these boards. The NSP Elements Funboards are constructed from secure cell, fully fused EPS foam that’s laminated and vacuum molded with a combination of high grade fiberglass and epoxy resin. A durable polyurethane coating is integrated within the mould and then completed with a performance hybrid finish.

This Shred Stixx Custom is the evolution of last season’s Pro Model. This shape has been fine tuned with each new board by Shred Stixx Team Shaper Nick Wiersema and over 20 years of board shaping experience. The Stixx Custom combines decades of shaping knowledge with the performance of a world championship winning wakesurf board. For 2013 the quad fin set up has been refined for maximum drive down the line. This design combines an aggressive mix of single and double concaves with a bottom channel between the fins and out the signature Shred Stixx wing tail for im-proved flow and easy release off the lip. The deck of the board has a progressive step for increased volume allowing the riders to stay in the wave after big airs and tricks. The Semi Pro sets the standard for high performance surf style wakesurfing.

The DJ JamesZ custom features our eps tech construction which includes deck chan-nels for grip, strength and flex moderation. It also comes with high quality fiberglass (s-glass and direct size RWG e-glass) as opposed to industry standard e-glass for added strength and longevity. It also features a bamboo stringer glued into the close tolerance and highly fused tight bead structure of the marko foam eps blank. All features com-bined produce one of the most durable, custom made wakesurf boards with the highest strength to weight ratios which retains it’s pop and is easy to flick around. All boards are individually made in the usa in our Santa Cruz factory and can be custom ordered to specific sizes. James rides 5’5 1/4” x 19.5” x 2.0”.

The JS Jetty Pro has a deeper concave, center apex brought forward and a 6 fin setup. It is faster with stability, basically meant to be fast whether behind a terrible boat wave or a great boat wave. The 6 fin is a new concept but is catching on quick for added drive creating some of the biggest airs in the industry. It also comes in a para-bolic so that those doing the big airs have extra strength added to the rail of the board.

The 1/2 Moon is a rocket and rides high on the water. Standard size is 4’ 8”-also available in 4’ 6” and 4’ 10”. The 1/2 Moon has been called “The most forgiving, high performance board on the market.” Drive created by the unique quad surfboard set-up, which allows for huge power turns and massive airs, while hand-rolled rails provide a forgiving and effortless flow. This model gives beginner wake surfers the tools they need to progress without losing their “pop” and control riders depend on.

W hat can be

said about Donald Takayama that has not already been said after his untimely death in 2012? Most surfers have never even heard of him, except when seeing his last name on one of those kooks longboards they just past walking down the street. He started surfing at Waikiki beach at the age of five, which was also around the same time and place I started surfing. Before he was even

a teenager he started making his mark as an accomplished surfer visiting all the surf spots around the island, and surfing them well showed the drive he exhibited at an early age. At twelve years old he had the guts to move away from his home in Hawaii for an unsure carrier in California. Leaving his home as an up and coming surfboard shaper would make most adults second guess there decision to make a big move like that, but not Donald. Years later his board shapes are still sought

after along with Robert August, Dewey Weber and a few oth-ers as a must have longboard. Always the innovator and perfectionist Donald Takayama has even been known to go to a board supplier that carried his boards and shred all the ones that didn’t meet his standards. As far as I’m concerned the board that I received has been a perfect match for my style with the concave nose and round tail; it’s a real can’t-go-wrong board that I use behind the boat now that I have moved inland.

Mastering a Disability through

Stand Up Paddling

Life has often been compared to a race. A race everyone runs, everyone finishes, but only a few are awarded a prize. For those that race to win, there is a realization that Lifes race is not a short sprint but a long distance marathon, with many obstacles along the way that must be overcome. These

obstacles or circumstances we face throughout our lives, tend to discourage us and keep us from performing to the best of our abilities.

Page 75: Boarders

For believers, God allows these trials and roadblocks in our lives, as part of his

master plan for all of us. He knows that to overcome the hardships in our lives we must develop patience, endurance, and courage if we are to be like the successful athlete and “keep our eyes on the finish line.” Needless to say, most of us are not very athletic, much less successful athletes. An “athlete” is a person who undergoes rigorous training requiring physical strength, agility and stamina and they must have the desire to be the best at whatever they choose to do. But the social, cultural, emotional and behavioral obstacles we overcome in our lives, are what feeds this desire and helps it to grow. For people with a disability, our culture, their social lives, and the associated emotions and behaviors combine to form seemingly insurmountable obstacles and all too often their desires are crushed or simply disappear. Autism is this type of disability. While simply put, it is a variation in the human operating system. Yet it affects every aspect of a persons life. Social interaction is limited because they are “different”. Emotions and behaviors in turn range from one extreme to another which induces a cultural attitude of indifference, sympathy and even fear due to

society’s lack of understanding for this and other types of disabilities. The foods that feed our desires, praise, encouragement, and acceptance are lacking in their diet and ultimately their desires are starved out of existence. But every now and then, to our amazement, we encounter that special person who refuses to allow his disability to slow down his quest for greatness, and he runs the race of life not simply to finish, but to win. Through his

efforts and diligence he not only overcomes his personal obstacles but he endures through other circumstances that would defeat the strongest of athletes. Joseph Cunningham, aka JoJo, has proven that he is this kind of athlete. He is an Athlete with Autism. As his parents, my husband, Big Joe and I believed that there were guidelines to follow in raising a special needs child. We found that developmental disabilities could cause social, communication and behavioral challenges and by following these guidelines we could lessen the impact of these challenges. But more importantly, we learned to focus on our son and not his disability. After a tryout with the local little league team that ended with

the coach notifying us that JoJo’s left-right confusion placed him at risk for injury we knew it was time to discuss alternative sports for our son. JoJo’s father told him that he believed God had created him for a purpose, and in doing so, had blessed him with an intense amount of energy. We just had to find a way to funnel that energy in the right direction. Together they found a love for competitive cycling and fitness training. JoJo learned from his

father that through hard work, perseverance, and courage, one could overcome and rise above

the disadvantages life offered. In doing so JoJo has learned not to allow his disability to hinder his ability to accomplish whatever goals he seeks. JoJo loves the fact that standup is a friendly sport but also fuels his competitive spirit. “The prizes and media attention that follow a race are cool,” he says, but when I do something, I want to do it, and do it well. He continues to train hard to master the balance, strength and technique paddle boarding requires, but he does so now knowing there are no obstacles he cannot overcome, and when his disability stirs up those feelings of inadequacy or despair, he knows where to go. He heads for the water. A place where he knows, nothing can stop him in this race we call life.

“We just had to find a way to funnel that energy in the right direction.”

When any aspiring photographer decides to upgrade from the generic point and shoot camera to a DSLR it can be overwhelming to make a decision. There are so many dif-

ferent brands out there, but where is the right place to start? The most common misconcep-tion about DSLR cameras is that megapixels are the top priority. I see far too many people who come to the conclusion that they need the 36.3 megapixel Nikon D800 because they believe it will turn water into wine. While megapixels are indeed a big part of the decision, they should not be the deciding factor. For the beginner or hobbyist that is interested in learning more about photography and its’ many techniques, the Nikon D5000 is a great camera to start with.

T he D5000 has a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, which is a fancy way of saying that a high reso-

lution picture taken with this camera will contain roughly 12,300,000 pixels. More important than megapixels, this camera has an extremely wide range of settings that can be altered in just a few seconds. Shutter speeds can be as slow as 30 seconds or as quick as 1/4000 of a second, which makes this camera perfect for night photography or action photography. In addition to the fast shutter speeds the D5000 is also capable of a 4 frame per second multi-shot set-ting, which is quick enough to capture sequences with ease.

The D5000 is classified as an inter-mediate level camera, but I have person-ally used it in a professional setting for about 2 years. This camera, when taken the time to learn its functions, is able to

stand up to some of the market lead-ers without too much trouble. The two most defining features of this camera would be the interface and LCD screen. Most cameras have a static LCD screen, meaning it doesn’t move. Why would you ever need an LCD screen to move? Well unless you have tried a camera like the D5000 you would never know, but the D5000 allows you to swivel the LCD screen and still view your settings and even view your subject through the live view setting. While the LCD screen is a luxury, the interface of this camera is what really set it apart. Higher end DSLR cameras place all of the settings on a tiny screen, usually located on top of the body; the D5000 places all of the settings within the large LCD screen, which not only makes them easier to see but also just as easy to adjust in a moments notice. The shutter speed and

apertures are still adjusted by the same means as most DSLR cameras, but set-tings like ISO speed or bracketing are done by navigating through a simple screen that lays out everything clearly and neatly.

This camera is able to satisfy the needs of any hobbyist, and even profes-sionals on a tight budget. There are no bad features to this camera, and the price is also relatively low due to how quickly camera technology has been progressing. On a scale of 1 to 10, this camera is easily an 8. The only reason it is not a full 10 is because of the relative-ly low megapixel count when compared to newer models, but if this camera was able to be more than adequate for a professional’s needs during countless shoots, then it will be perfect for anyone who is looking to start shooting and wants to save a few bucks.
