State Board of Education President Michael Kirst gave us insights on Common Core, the second year of the LCAP, and provided the just released California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress form. Our local State Assembly and Senate members also gave us an update on the improving state budget, possible remedies to address the loss of Prop 30 revenues, the LCFF and the reserve cap. Adequate funding was an important point highlighted by Assemblyman Rich Gordon. He expressed that, although we have a better funding model in the LCFF, ‘we missed the opportunity to provide a funding model that provides adequacy’. Senator Jim Beall talked about the state aspiring to reach the median national funding level, but I believe that most school board members would want funding to be adequate, which would require an amount greater than the average. As for the reserve cap, we still have work to do to stress the importance of the need for a repeal, since some of our local legislators do not believe that a trigger leading to its implementation will occur. One piece of legislation that was not addressed and is under the radar is AB1750 by Assemblyman Luis Alejo. This bill would require the State Department of Education to commission a report that identifies model programs, standards, and curricula pertaining to ethnic studies at the high school level, which is related to our roundtable discussion later this month. ~ Albert Gonzalez Roundtable Discussion on “Race in Our Schools” Wednesday, March 26, 7:00 PM (Note earlier start) Milpitas Room 2 nd Floor North, SCCOE Special Guest: Jesús Holguín 2015 CSBA President Election of Officers During the first half hour, President Holguín and David DeLuz, CSBA’s Director for Strategic Initiatives and Development will talk about the Reserve Cap Issue, Visual and Performing Arts, LCFF, and key CSBA initiatives aimed at shaping the future for our state’s 6.2 million students. President’s Corner

The highlight of the month of March was the Legislative Brunch, which was a great success.

Senator Jim Beall talked about the state aspiring

to reach the median national funding level, but I believe that most school board members would want funding to be adequate, which would require an amount greater than the average.

Executive Director’s Report

At the March 25th Executive Board meeting, we will hold the Election of Officers for the 2015-2016 School Year. Thanks to past presidents, Frank Biehl (East Side UHSD), Josephine (Jo) Lucey, Chair (Cupertino), and Nancy Newton, (Fremont Union HSD) for their nominations! Our nominee for President, Bob Benevento of Morgan Hill Unified has served as Vice President and chaired the Legislative Brunch. In that capacity, he rejuvenated the event, taking it from a series of monologs by elected officials to a series of lively conversations and moderated panel discussions. After appointment in January 2011, Bob was elected in 2012 to full four year term. This year, he serves as President of the MHUSD Board. Bob was appointed to Delegate Assembly, in 2013, and re-elected, in 2014. Bob was also appointed to the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization. Bob and his wife have four children, including two in college, and they are expecting their first grandchild in June 2015.

Reid Myers, nominee for Vice President, has been an active member of the SCCSBA since her election to the Sunnyvale Elementary school board in 2011. She is passionate about the value of the SCCSBA and has organized the Fall Dinner, co-chaired the Hoffmann

Awards, twice, and organized this year’s Legislative Brunch. She is currently a candidate for Delegate Assembly. Reid is a leader in her community where she facilitates quarterly meetings of neighborhood association leaders, volunteers weekly at Sunnyvale Community Services, and leads activities in schools across Sunnyvale.
