Board of Education Meeting News February 16, 2011 Board Workshop The Board held a workshop to review possible budget reductions the District could make if Governor Brown’s proposed budget is ap- proved. The District is facing an estimated deficit between $9.3 and $24.8 million for the 2011-12 school year. The Board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, February 22 to discuss the recommendations. Outstanding Students The Board recognized nine students for their outstanding aca- demic achievement. From Jones Elementary School, Evette Peters, principal, were Somyr Banks, Isaac Ramos, and Jacqueline Reyes. Their teachers are Claudia Perez, Jessica Lyons, and Michelle Burr. From Mt. Vernon Elementary School, Ramon Velasco, principal, were Carmine Guillen, Christopher Guillen, and Sinai Pantoja. Their teachers are Eddie Barker, Valerie Anderlik, and Alicia Mendoza. From Salinas Elementary School, Daniel Marin, principal, were Cindy Alvarez, Elijah Davis, and Natalie Uribe. Their teachers are Jennifer Snyder, Laurie Hassel, and Catherine Sadlier. Special Resolutions The Board approved resolutions in support of Presidents Day, the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s 5K, and the placement of a rev- enue extension measure on the June 2011 ballot. Administrative Presentation Dr. Harold Vollkommer, assistant superintendent, Human Resources–Certificated/Student Services, and Mohammad Z. Islam, chief business and financial officer, Business Services, presented an update on the notices to Cure and Correct for Public Safety Academy and Casa Ramona Academy. In other Board Action Jim Dilday was selected as Interim Deputy Superintendent. In Memoriam The Board expressed its sympathy to the family of deceased employee Lynia Carrie (Jo) Burhop. Academic Decathlon Congratulations to Arroyo Valley High School for plac- ing third in the San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon. This is the highest finish this century for any District school! Arroyo Valley will represent San Bernardino County at the state Academic Decathlon competition on March 11-14 in Sacramento. Other District schools with a strong finish include Pacific High and Cajon High School, which took eighth place. Also, San Bernardino High was recognized as the most improved District high school. Black History Bee Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s Black History Bee sponsored by the Delta Rho Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. In the third- and fourth-grade division, Raven Robinson and Phillip Nikol of Bonnie Oehl Elementary School took first place. Yunive Sanz- Lopez and Miracle Holifield of Barton Elementary School took second place, and Gabriel Knerr and Maryjane Guadalajara, also of Barton, took third place. Board Workshop

The Board held a workshop to review possible budget reductions the District could make if Governor Brown’s proposed budget is ap-proved. The District is facing an estimated deficit between $9.3 and $24.8 million for the 2011-12 school year. The Board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, February 22 to discuss the recommendations.

Outstanding Students

The Board recognized nine students for their outstanding aca-demic achievement. From Jones Elementary School, Evette Peters, principal, were Somyr Banks, Isaac Ramos, and Jacqueline Reyes. sixth-grade division. First-place team winners were Alyssa Hall and Rachel Knerr and Autumm Steenburgen and Ocean Rodriguez, all of Barton Elementary School, and Frank Trujillo and Victor Chavez and Antonio Flores and Vicente Chavez, all of Cole Elementary School. Second place was a tie between Kaylee Anstine’s team from Davidson Elementary School and Francis Barron and Veronica Morales of Cole Elementary.

In the middle school division, six teams tied for first place. They were Marisol Zarate and Isabel Torres, Ivan Garcia and Aaron Ainsworth, Jasmine Chan and Marissa Kilpatrick, and Alejandra Davila and Nicholas Ainsworth, all from Chavez Middle School; Monica Gutierrez’s team from Rodriguez PREP Academy; and Traviana Kazee and Semaj Davis of Shandin Hills Middle School.

Student Artists

Richardson PREP HI eighth grad-ers Melissa Cosio and Jenny Fuentes won the prestigious Scholastic Arts Award Gold Key. They are two of only three winners from this region to advance to the national competition in New York City. Melissa’s and Jenny’s artwork will be on display at the San Bernardino County Museum’s Fisk Gallery on Sunday, March 6 from 1 to 2 p.m.

CABE Award

Kudos to the two Arroyo Valley High School students who are win-ners in the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) student art contest. The theme was “Language, Culture, and Leadership.” The $1,500 first-place award went to junior Jerry Sanchez, and the $100 fourth-place award went to senior Kieu Nguyen. Their art teacher is Julie Tabler.

Retirement Plans

If you are planning to retire, you’d better say so soon. In accordance

with the negotiated contract, certifi-cated employees intending to retire at the end of this school year need to notify Human Resources–Certificated in writing of their intent 90 days prior to the date of retirement in order to receive the District’s contribution for retiree medical benefits. Please note: if you are on A Track, you need to sub-mit your intent to retire by the end of the day on Friday, February 25, 2011. If you are on B, C, or D Track, you need to submit your intent to retire by the end of the day on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. If you are at a traditional calendar or a non-school site, you must submit your intent to retire by the end of the day on Friday, March 4, 2011.

Help Wanted

CaSA, the Community and School Alliance, is looking for an advertising sales representative who can sell ad space in the annual CaSA Tabloid. The sales rep. will receive commission based on sales and a portion of the proceeds will fund teacher grants. For more information, please call CaSA President Robbi Brunk at 754-2867.

Math Workshop

Parents can attend a free Forgotten Math workshop on Tuesday, March 1 from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at the District’s Family Resource Center, located at 1525 W. Highland Avenue

Child Welfare

Every three months, your Child Welfare Fund (CWF) donates $5,000 to the Earl R. Crane Dental Center, also called the Children’s Dental Center. The center provides dental care for our students who cannot afford care; annual dental screenings for all of our first-grade students, and orthodontia for students with severely crooked teeth at low or no cost is also provided.

CWF board meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at the WHAA at 3:45 p.m. For additional in-formation, please contact chairperson Wendell Lake at 388-6524.

Only the 15 schools in each category with the most nomina-tions move on to the second phase of the competition.
