Dear Community Member,
There are more County resources and opportunities than ever in Hacienda Heights, with more to come! A new shuttleservice will be launching soon called the “Heights Hopper” that will link you to local County facilities within yourcommunity (see page 2). There is exciting progress in the planning for the future of the Puente Hills Landfill Park (seepage 3). The annual Fourth of July Parade demonstrates the hometown pride and patriotism that Hacienda Heightsresidents have for our country (see page 4). Included are a variety of recreational programs held at local parks and atthe Hacienda Heights Community Center, which has become a hub for community gatherings (see page 6). Next summeryou will be able to cool off at the new splash pad that will be constructed at Los Robles Park. Watch for the re-openingof the newly upgraded and renovated Hacienda Heights Library later this year (see page 10). Much appreciation isextended to our many dedicated County employees, and volunteers, who invest their talents and expertise to keepHacienda Heights residents safe, provide creative and literacy opportunities, recreational activities for all ages, seniorprograms, code enforcement, small business assistance, and much more. Take a moment to review the variety of resourcesthe County has to offer in this publication that has been produced specifically for the Hacienda Heightscommunity. There is something for everyone, and as always, stay connected!

Since the closure of the nation’s second largest landfill, the County has been activelyplanning for the next phase of its use!The closure of the Puente Hills Landfill presents an extraordinary opportunity to develop theland into a regional park that will offer trails, fitness activities, educational opportunities, andways to experience stunning panoramic views. The landfill, which is owned by the SanitationDistricts of Los Angeles County, will be designed and constructed into a park that will be managedby the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Re-purposing a Former Landfill Site into a Regional ParkThe Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a series of four publicworkshops to gather input and develop concepts for the long-term vision ofthe future park. Community members from Hacienda Heights were inattendance and encouraged to“dream” in the first workshop, select from three park conceptsin the second workshop, one ofwhich was shaped into the“Preferred Park Concept”presented in the third workshop, with the “Final Park Concept”presented at the fourthworkshop. The Final Park Planincludes a variety of recreationaluses for all to enjoy.
The Master PlanAs the Sanitation Districts winds downtheir closure activities, approximately142 acres will be set aside as part of theMaster Plan for park development. Parkspaces, landscape and programming willbe designed to be sensitive to wildlifeand the adjacent nature preserve. Parkinprovements must remain adaptable inresponse to soil settling, which may beup to 125 feet in some areas over thenext 30 years and beyond.
The existing Schabarum-Skyline Trailwill be the recreational backbone of the future park, connecting to multi-use trails, equestrian trail stagingareas, and a fitness running loop. Other recommended park elements include a visitor center, park entry plaza, scenic overlook, trail lift, performance space, picnic areas, dog park, bike skills area, stair climbs, slides, zip lines, and education and interpretive elements. Phase I ofthe project is anticipated to be completed by 2020.
The 45-day comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Report will end on August 8, 2016. For more information log onto the parkwebsite at www.puentehillslandfillpark.org or contact Michelle O’Connor at the Department of Parks and Recreation at (213) 351-5121.
