On 6th October, 1976, five visionarymen with extensive constructionexperience got together to found andsteer Gamuda on an extraordinary andhigh growth journey, setting–upoperations along Jalan Gopeng, in themining town of Ipoh, Perak.
Gamuda’s first project was the Bahau –Keratong Highway, and in the years tofollow, Gamuda expanded its portfoliowith various projects that provedpivotal to the Group’s growth. Fromrural roads, bridges and buildings, theGroup’s expertise soon saw theconstruction of the Lumut NavalHarbour and Dockyard, Penang NorthButterworth Container Terminal, andexpanded further to include urbanexpressways and toll plazas, such as theAyer Keroh - Senawang Toll and theSimpang Pulai - Gopeng Highway alongthe North South Expressway.

The rapidly growing Group shifted operations from Ipoh to theKlang-Valley in the late eighties. By now, the Group’s engineeringand construction capabilities were well-known, and it was not longbefore the Group was entrusted with projects that challenged themindset of engineers. Malaysia was aspiring to be a developednation with its Vision 2020, yet there were many areas that had tobe improved. Realising these opportunities, Gamuda soon took oneven more challenging projects, leading further to its listing on theMain Board of Bursa Malaysia (then known as the Kuala LumpurStock Exchange) in 1992. And the rest they say is history!
During the nineties, Gamuda has transformed into a major playerin Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) infrastructure projects andcompleted RM 10 Billion worth of contracts. During this period ofgrowth, the Group has expanded its businesses from engineeringand construction to the operations of infrastructure concessions,which include tolling of highways and supply of treated water.
Gamuda’s expertise has left an indelible mark in Malaysia withprojects like the Lebuh Raya Damansara Puchong, Shah AlamExpressway, SPRINT Highway, the Sungai Selangor Water SupplyScheme Phase 3, and the innovative dual-use SMART tunnel. Thegroup has the largest network of urban toll-roads in the Malaysiaand is the nation’s biggest water treatment operator.
