IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION___________________ A Letter from our Executive Director

Welcome! You are now part of a dynamic group of ISU Alumni that willingly take the lead in providing direction, input, support and guidance for all Idaho State University alums. Founded in 1906, the ISU Alumni Association goals remain the same today as when we were founded - to better Idaho State University and keep our alumni connected and engaged with their alma mater.

This is an exciting time for the Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association. We continue to pursue fund raising opportunities for and the establishment of the ISU Alumni and Advancement Center to be located on the Pocatello, ISU campus adjacent to Holt Arena. As with all endeavors of this kind, our alumni help and support are a critical component to our success. Alumni Relations and the Association offer many opportunities for alumni to be involved with their university at their own level whether it’s with time, talent or treasure.

We look forward with great anticipation to our upcoming year. 2011 provided us the opportunity to implement changes determined by our board for more effective and efficient committees and board member involvement. This year we will continue to build on that very solid foundation.

Homecoming is always the highlight of each year for alumni. Homecoming weekend will kick-off with the annual fun and festivities at Pinehurst Nursery. Keeping tradition firmly in our focus, our special award recipients will be recognized at the President’s Alumni Recognition Dinner. Alumni board members, former and current award recipients will enjoy the Pre-Parade Breakfast at the Magnuson Alumni House and then board the Alumni Trolley for the Homecoming parade through downtown Pocatello and experience the fun and excitement of the football game at Holt Arena. Other events occur throughout the year including our three board meetings: Fall in Pocatello, Winter in Boise and Spring, back in Pocatello.

The ISU Alumni Association hosts our annual Legislative Reception in Boise the last week of January in conjunction with our Winter board meeting. This event offers each of us the opportunity to visit with Idaho lawmakers and university administrators regarding all aspects of our University. New in 2012 was our Golden and Silver Bengals recognition for 50 and 25 year graduates during Commencement. This event shows all the signs of quick expansion and has established another opportunity Alumni Relations can reach out to our alumni and give them reasons to connect or re-connect with their alma mater. The Sports Hall of Fame reception and induction is just one more way the ISU Alumni Association brings more of our alumni into or back into the fold. The golf tournament in Jerome and our summer Steve Eaton concert in Boise offer other relaxed, social and welcoming opportunities for alumni to re-connect and enjoy one another.

The Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association are here for you. Allow us to provide assistance and support. Please contact us at any time to provide information or connections that you need. We look forward to seeing you at future events either on the Pocatello campus or any other location where our great alumni gather!

IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION___________________

STATEMENT OF MISSIONThe mission of the Idaho State University Alumni Association is to promote the welfare and to advance the objectives of Idaho State University through the sustained involvement of its alumni by providing philanthropic, intellectual and social opportunities.

EARLY HISTORYThe first Alumni Association was organized on May 20, 1906, when a banquet was held in the Pacific Hotel. The Academy of Idaho could boast only 14 graduates, but they began “The Alumni Association of the Academy of Idaho,” with Charles W. McClain, ’04 president; Helen K. Whittlesy, ’04, vice-president; and C. Redman Moon, ’06, secretary and treasurer.

THE IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONThrough its volunteer organization, the association provides guidance and support for the goals and values of the University. The Association’s sponsorship of cultural, social and educational activities and services for alumni builds good will among alumni and benefits the University directly and indirectly.

Membership in the ISU Alumni Association numbers more than 80,000 and is granted to any individual who graduates from an Academic or Vocational Technical program at ISU, or who has attended the institution for 24 or more credit hours at any time since the institutions founding in 1901.

The Director of Alumni Relations reports to the Vice President for University Advancement. A twenty four-member Alumni Board of Directors serves in an advisory capacity. They represent geographic regions, eras, and the various disciplines within the University.

At the heart of the Alumni organization are the legions of alumni and friends who assist as volunteers for a variety of Alumni programs. Voluntary action on the part of alumni in support of ISU has been one of the most important factors in establishing ISU’s position today.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The purpose of the Idaho State University Alumni Association is to support the goals of the University and to represent the voice of alumni in the strategic planning process of the University. Its primary service focuses upon four areas: (1) enhancing communication between University leaders and alumni; (2) student support; (3) alumni programs; (4) legislative advocacy.

The ISUAA Board of Directors is the governing body of the Association. It is composed of 24 directors selected by geographical location, degree/major, graduation year and experience. The board’s primary purpose is to make policy that directs the Association toward the attainment of its goals. All board members serve on a committee that focuses on specific areas and programs.

General Information

ISUAA Directors are elected for a four–year term. Currently, meetings are held three times each year—in the fall, winter,

and spring. Board members are responsible for making their own travel and

accommodation arrangements. There is no reimbursement for these expenses, however, these expenses are considered tax-deductible and information and forms are provided to allow processing them as a gift in kind to the University and can be claimed on tax returns.

What to expect at a meeting

Board members will receive via email or postal service, prior to the upcoming meeting, an agenda and minutes from the previous meeting. The secretary for the Board will request an RSVP for each meeting.

Terms, election process, and other additional information are outlined in the by-laws.

Should you ever have any questions, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (208) 282-3755 or (1-800) 933-4781

Turner Hall – Built in 1905 – Demolished in 1966. The College of Business now occupies this site.

Historical Information about ISU…The roots of Idaho State University began in 1901 when the Academy of Idaho was established by the Idaho State legislature. The bill creating the Academy was sponsored by Theodore F. Turner, a senator from the Pocatello area. The Academy was a two year school which offered college preparatory and vocational courses.Opening exercises for the school took place on September 22, 1902. Forty students and four faculty members attended the first day of class. However, a report by Principal John W. Farris later showed a grand total of 70 students had enrolled by the end of the first term.

The curriculum of the new school offered two basic choices of courses: 1) College Preparatory courses including the Classical, Scientific, and English and 2) the Industrial courses including Commerce, Domestic Economy, Mechanic Arts, and Stenography/Typing.

In 1913, Senator Turner introduced another bill that would have changed the Academy to the Idaho Technical College, a four year school offering courses in the applied sciences, the practical arts, commerce and education. The bill passed the legislature only to be vetoed by the Governor.

Idaho’s rapidly growing population and the increased educational needs of the State’s young people, not to mention the expanded capacity of the Academy, resulted in the institution’s renaming as the Idaho Technical Institute. The State Legislature authorized the school to offer vocational trade courses and junior college-type programs of academic and occupational classes.

The name of the institution was changed again in 1927 to the University of Idaho Southern Branch. As the name implies the institution became an extension of the Moscow campus and stress was put on the cultural curricula rather than the

World War II was significant in ISU’s development. A decline in students resulted and UISB was chosen as one of several schools to educate members of the Navy’s V-12 program.

Many believe it was the existence of that military group which strengthened the academic program to a point where creation of Idaho State College was nearly assured.

Signing of the 29th legislature’s bill in 1947 by Governor C.A. Robins, himself and UISB alumnus, created an independent, four-year degree granting institution. Divisions within the new Idaho State College included the College of Pharmacy, and the School of Trade and Technical Education. The Division of Graduate Studies was organized in 1955, the College of Education in 1958 and the Division of Medical Arts in 1961.

In 1963, Governor Robert E. Smylie signed another legislative bill changing the name of the institution to Idaho State University.

In 1967 the Division of Graduate Studies was renamed the Graduate School and the Medical Arts Division became the College of Medical Arts in 1968 and the College of Health Related Professions in 1975.

Idaho State University experienced major restructuring of its colleges which was implemented in 2010. The colleges are as follows:

College of Arts and LettersCollege of BusinessCollege of EducationCollege of Science and EngineeringCollege of TechnologyDivision of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy Kasiska School of Health Professions School of Nursing

President Arthur C. Vailas

Biographical Summary

Arthur C. Vailas became the 12th president of Idaho State University on July 1, 2006. He has placed ISU on a trajectory to become a major research institution that provides the highest quality education to its students. Under his direction, ISU engages in teaching, research and service designed to respond to local, national and global societal needs, especially in the fields of energy, health care and the environment.

Since arriving, President Vailas has increased substantially the university's financial reserves, while at the same time purchasing and implementing a university wide, comprehensive information system. In 2010, he led a collaborative effort to reorganize the university to enhance student program offerings and increase administrative efficiency. External research funding increased 27 percent in 2010. In January 2011, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced that ISU's classification had been elevated to "Research University-High" status, placing ISU in a field enjoyed by less than 5 percent of all higher academic institutions.

Under his leadership, enrollment has increased substantially. From 2006 to 2009, enrollment increased more than 10 percent, with residence halls nearly full. The Early College program, which allows high school students to take university courses at reduced cost, has expanded. To attract and assist returning military personnel seeking educations, the university operates the Veterans' Sanctuary and was recognized as a military-friendly school for 2011 by G.I. Jobs magazine. Idaho State University has more graduate full-time equivalent students than any other university in Idaho. In 2011, the athletics department received full NCAA certification.

Fundraising successes and partnerships have resulted in the construction of new facilities for teaching and research. The 200,000 square- foot ISU Meridian Health Science Center, which opened in 2009, houses all of ISU's Treasure Valley health professions programs and represents a partnership with the Meridian School System and the City of Meridian. Its L.S. Skaggs pharmacy facility is the result of a $6 million gift from the ALSAM Foundation. A recent gift from Delta Dental supports the ISU dental residency clinic in Meridian.

In Pocatello, the Energy Systems and Technology Education Center is a partnership with the Idaho National Laboratory and Partners for Prosperity and enjoys equipment made possible by Qwest.

In Idaho Falls, a new 55,000 square-foot building for the Center for Advanced Energy Studies was formed through partnerships with the other Idaho universities, the U.S. Department of Energy and private entities. There, researchers are working on the latest in energy technology.

Athletics has benefitted from a gift to name the Papenberg Softball Field, and has received gifts from Idaho Central Credit Union and Idaho State University Credit Union for a new basketball court and football field. An endowment for the performing arts has been established to attract and support visiting artists and artists-in-residence.

Prior to joining ISU, President Vailas was vice president for research and intellectual property management for the University of Houston, and vice chancellor for research for the University of Houston System, where he also was an advisor to the Texas governor on energy, helped establish the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America, and developed a formal affiliation between UH and the Texas Medical Center. He served on the NASA national advisory council and was on the executive board of the Southeastern Universities Research Association. Earlier, he held faculty and leadership positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of California-Los Angeles.
