Board members attend monthly Board meetings; plan, organize, and facilitate department events; volunteer at shows; and organize and staff fundraising events. Board members work behind the scenes to build community relationships, foster giving, and serve as publicity for the department’s events and shows. Board members oversee their committees and ensure they function successfully.

Everybody working with the drama kids in any capacity, including all Board members and Boosters who volunteer at the school, must complete NSD Volunteer paperwork and a WSP background check. These will be kept on file at the school and will be good for 2 years.

The Board is comprised of committees created to directly benefit the students in the Drama department (e.g., costumes or rehearsal dinners). Committee chairs are responsible for the planning and execution of their events or activities, and are responsible for the oversight of their volunteers and the events at which they participate.

The WHS Improv Team in all their glory…

Fall and winter shows may be single- or two-weekend runs, and the Musical has always been a two-weekend run. Wednesday shows and weekend matinees have both had successful runs but are not the norm. Dates of all performances and duration of show runs are determined by the Drama department teacher.

All performances are by audition. All rehearsals take places after school, with occasional weekend rehearsals as needed. Currently Mr. B posts his schedule on his school webpage.

The Theater department produces a comedy or drama in the fall, a comedy or drama in the winter, and a musical in the spring. Students also participate in Drama Fest, a collection of Senior-directed and produced one-act plays (which may occur in winter or late spring). Students may also audition for the Improv team. Advanced Theater students may participate in the Book-It Playwriting workshop and present their plays in a variety of performance venues.

PerformancesThe President or Co-Presidents provide general oversight and leadership to the committees, but ultimately the Drama department teacher provides direction for the Board as a whole and to committees individually.

The Theater Department teacher is Mr. Josh Butchart, whom the students refer to as Mr. B or B. Mr. B began his tenure in the 2013-2014 academic year. He is preceded as leader of the department by Mrs. Leslie Herlich (referred to as H) and Mr. Hjalmer Anderson (who was also known as H).

We are all volunteers committed to the success of the WHS Drama Department and the WHS Theatre Company. Asking for help or calling for volunteers is encouraged!

WHS Drama Booster MemberA WHS Drama Booster is any parent, family member, community person, organization, or company who supports the WHS Theatre Company. Parents of students in Tech Theater and Performance Theater classes sign up for Boosters and are contacted throughout the year as volunteer opportunities arise. Boosters are an integral part of creating publicity for the shows and activities of the Drama Department. A willingness to be contacted for volunteering, attending shows, and raising awareness of the department are all that is required to be a WHS Drama Booster. Providing contact information to the Board registers your membership.

The Woodinville High School Theatre CompanyThe name of the production and performance side of the WHS Drama Department.

WHS Drama Department, aka Theater DepartmentMr. B prefers the word Theater to Drama. The WHS Drama, or Theater, department provides Tech Theater and Performance Theater classes, overseen by the Theater teacher. The words Drama and Theater may be used interchangeably.

A note on ASB and AccountingThe Drama Department covers its expense with the revenue generated from performance ticket sales. All of this accounting is processed through the ASB account in a Drama sub-account. ASB pays the expenses as they come in, knowing that the ticket sales will cover them (ASB will pay bills if there is no surplus knowing that ticket sales will come in). The Boosters are fortunate in that ASB has always maintained this Drama sub-account, which allows any surplus to rollover. The account has always been in the black at the end of the academic year. Expenses not covered by ASB may be covered by Boosters if the board deems them necessary.

WHS Drama Booster or Theatre Company PatronA WHS Drama Booster Patron is a person who has contributed to the WHS Drama Booster Club at any financial level. Currently there are five donation levels:

Supporting Cast (0-$49)Lead Actor ($50-$99)Director ($100-$249)

Producer ($250 - $499)Executive Producer ($500 and above)

Each donation level receives program and website recognition, and Lead Actor level and above receive show tickets.

While many arts organizations require 100% participation from their Board and their Boosters, WHS Drama Boosters does not require financial donations from either; however, we do highly encourage all Board members and Boosters to contribute to the success of the department by making a financial donation to the Boosters.

Financial Donations to The WHS Drama BoostersDrama Boosters is a self-funded group. 100% of monies donated to or raised by Boosters go directly to help with the costs and expenses of the Drama Department and its theater productions. Funds raised by Boosters offset costs such as Playwriting or Improv workshops, transportation to the State Thespian Festival, set construction, choreographer fees, cast meals, and more.

WHS Theatre Company SponsorA WHS Theatre Company Sponsor is a company or organization that donates money, purchases program advertising, provides grants, or matches funds.

Past Sponsors include: Target, Microsoft, WA Pizza Co., Windermere – The Blue Team, Welcome Mat Services, The Vineyard, and others. 2013 - The Curious Savage
