To all good citizens of the Barony of Coeur d’Ennui, the Canton of Axed Root, and all others these words meet - greetings from Akitsuki Yoshimitsu loyal servant to the Crown of Calontir, Vicar of Coeur d’Ennui.

The barony has spent the past few months shoring up our home, and we are well on our way for a secure winter - a well-thatched roof overhead, a full larder, and a warm fire in the hearth around which to sit and make merry.

We have accomplished much in a short time. Offices have been smoothly transferred and a new forum to aid us in our projects - both baronial and personal - created. We have seen the return of old traditions (bardic gatherings and philosophy/discussion nights), and the creation of new (fighter practice cookout nights). And we have seen individual accomplishments at the archery butts, on the list fields, and in the exhibition halls.

You, the populace, are to be commended for bringing these good things to pass. Well done! Take pride in your part of what has been wrought thus far, and take ownership for the work yet to be done. Do not be content to stand idly by. Continue to ask yourselves, what can we do to be better citizens of the barony, canton, and kingdom? How can we help make Coeur d’Ennui great?

The deities do not share your prayers with me - as always, should you have comments, questions, ideas, complaints, or concerns, I invite you to speak or write to me. I stand with my bowl empty and ready to receive these gifts.

From my home in the heart of the Boar Ring, at the hour of the dog on this 18th Day of the ninth moon of the twenty-sixth year of Heisei, AS XLIX.

Unto the populace of the Barony of Coeur d’Ennui come greetings from the Baronial Knights Marshal

As the seasons turn it is once again time to move from our outdoor practice site to the new indoor site we are trying out this year. We have found, with the assistance of HE Hugh du Puy a new site. We are planning on using the Clive Elementary schools Public Rooms. The address is 1600 73rd Stree, Windsor Heights, IA 50324 and I have booked these facilities for Tuesdays, 6:30 to 9:00 PM until the end of December.

I will also post these fighter practices as events on the Unofficial Baronial Facebook page and on the Yahoo Groups and our new Baronial forum pages as well as the Baronial Website.

On a different note I would like to thank everyone for all their help with the projects for the upcoming Crown Tournament. It has been nice to see all come together to make this event a success. One person I would like to specifically thank is

Lord Alexander Johan Stilz for his contribution of the cloth streamers for use on the list field, this is greatly appreciated and will help us look our best for when we host events.

Again thanks to all who have come together, it is heartening to see so many work so hard and be so successful in making this a stronger, healthier group

Yours in Service

SCA Inc. Barony of Coeur D’ennui512 E Madison AveDes Moines, IA 50313-3757

Dear SCA Inc. Barony of Coeur D’ennui:

Thank you for your generous gift to the Make A Wish® Foundation. Your gift empowers the lives of thousands of kids, like Noelle, each year as they fight to overcome their life-threatening medical conditions. With a wish, they can see a better tomorrow. It gives them hope. Before her wish, Noella could only focus on her condition. “Just get better,” she though during her countless trips to the hospital. Every chemo session seemed to last forever…. unless the therapy dog paid a visit. Then time flew by. Every time Noella saw the therapy dog, she wished she had a puppy of her own. Then, Make A Wish® offered to grant Noella’s one true wish. She thought about the therapy dog, and imagined a furry friend of her own. Noella envi-sioned eyes that peered out from thick fur, a brown nose, and shaggy paws – a labradoodle! She knew this would change everything. In supporting Make A Wish® with your contribution of $50.00 on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, you are giving hope to all the children we serve at a most critical time of need. You help us bring to life a most heartfelt wish to rejuvenate and transform kids like Noella. Today, Noella and her labradoodle, Hippo, are best friends. More important than anything, she’s healthy. And she’s convinced that Hippo made her feel better. Since 1980, Make A Wish® has granted more than 226,000 wishes through the generosity of gifts from people like you. You understand what it means to share the power of a wish ® and we are so grateful!

Historical Tidbits #38

#331 In 1900, the French Science Academy put up an award of 100,000 Francs to the first person to have documentable contact with extraterrestrials. With the caveat that contact with those from Mars wouldn’t count, that would be “too easy”.

#332 Until the 16th century, carrots were white, yellow, black, purple or red. Carrots were bred orange in color on honor of the House of Orange, which led the Dutch revolt (1568-1609) and eventually became the Dutch Royal Family.

#333 the first book to be printed in English was ‘The History of Troy’ in 1474. The writer, William Caxton (1422-1492) also introduced the printing press to England.

#34 The official language of England from 1066 to 1362 was French.

#335 In 682 A.D. there was a drought so bad in southern England that the Saxons ate all their food and livestock and started to eat their own children.

#336 The first recorded direct democracy, where the whole community meets to vote on laws, was in 5 B.C. in Athens, Greece.

#337 The Spanish brought marijuana to America in 1545.

#338. Hernando Cortez (1485-1547) conquered the 5 million person Aztec Empire, with 600 men, 20 horses and 10 small cannon.

#339 There are more Christians in Africa than in America.

#340 Charlemagne (742-814) devised the money system of pounds, shillings and pence which was used throughout Europe and Britain until the 1970’s.

Recipes from Lady Iulia Kaloethina Eirenikina

English Pumpkin Pie

IngredientsPie Filling1 can pumpkin puree5 eggs (Reserve 1 egg for the top.)1 tsp cinnamon1 tsp nutmeg1 tsp cloves1/2 tsp salt1/2 cup sugar2 apples sliced thinly1 10oz pkg of Currants3 tbsp. butter

Pastry Crust1 1/2 cups flour4 Tbsp. butter2 egg yolks1/2 tsp. saltPinch saffron (optional)Water, about 3/8 cup

Directions

Mix flour, salt, and saffron together in a large bowl. Cut or rub the butter and eggs into the flour mixture until it forms fine crumbs. (I use a Pastry blender.) Add water a little at a time until it just sticks together too much water will make the dough too soft and sticky. Cover with a towel and allow to rest for 30 minutes. (I wrap mine with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge.) Roll out on a well-floured surface.

In a large bowl mix the eggs, pumpkin puree, sugar, and spices. Then heat frying pan to medium heat. (You will need a little bit of oil about 1/4 tsp to keep things from sticking.) Drop batter by 1/4 cup into the pan. (Give the pan a little shake to spread the batter out.) Cook 2-3 minutes until edges start to set and bubbles are forming in the center of the pancake. Flip and cook an additional 1-2 minutes. (The pancakes tend to be very delicate and break apart easily. So don’t get upset if they do.) Set cooked pancake aside and repeat until the batter is gone. Now peel, core and slice the apples. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In an already prepared pie crust place a layer of pancakes, followed by a layer of currants, and finally a layer of apple slices repeat the layers ending with a layer of apples. Now cut the butter into small pieces and scatter them on top. Place a second pie crust on top and crimp the edges then slit the crust. Brush the top with the reserved beaten egg and bake for 1 hr. (If you are using a store bought crust you will need to take the pie out half way through and cover the edges with aluminum foil so they won’t burn.)

To make a Pumpkin Pie.

Take a pound of pump ion and slice it, a handful of time, a little rosemary, and sweet marjoram stripped off the stalks, chop them small, then take cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and a few cloves all beaten, also ten eggs, and beat them, then mix and beat them all together, with as much sugar as you think fit, then fry them like a froise, after it is fried, let it stand till it is cold, then fill your pie after this manner. Take sliced apples sliced thin round ways, and lay a layer of the froise, and a layer of apples, with currants betwixt the layers. While your pie is fitted, put in a good deal of sweet butter before you close it. When the pie is baked, take six yolks of eggs, some white-wine or verjuyce, and make a caudle of this, but not too thick, cut up the lid, put it in, and stir them well together whilst the eggs and pumpkin be not perceived, and so serve it up.

How Sewing Became My Friend

For those of you that know me, it will not come as a surprise that sewing and I have been at odds for quite some time. No matter what I did, things did not turn out exactly how I planned. For a brief momentbefore the Japanese Raid or Trade, I embraced hand sewing for theJapanese attire we busily constructed. This was my first glimpse of clothing doing what was it was supposed to do. But time won out, and I ran back to the sewing machine that never quite agreed with mydirections.

Most projects still didn’t go as I had planned them. This includes my first attempt at tabi for Yoshi. They were an absolute failure, as no one’s feet are shaped like the tabi I constructed. I cried. I yelled. I shovedeverything related to tabi in the bottom of a tote and hoped Yoshi would not notice that I never made him that tabi. He did, but bless him for never saying a word about it.

Time passed. My neck openings never looked as nice as other people’s, so they kindly explained facing to me. I hand sewed the facing down, and they looked lovely! Hems never looked quite right, so I asked around. How do they get their hems to look so nice? Why, they hand sewed them. I tried it, and it worked!

But Yoshi needed new tabi. I can do this!! I asked friends for help on getting the pattern right. As they are truly awesome people, they did. The first sample was hand sewn due to a cutting error on my part. Sample 1 looked pretty good but needed some corrections. Sample 2 was sewn on the machine and managed to return to the alien shape that plagued me years ago.

I went home to lick my wounds and cry in private. I am going to do this. I used the original pattern from the first sample and made a new sample 1. I hand sewed it because that worked the first time. Voila! I changed a few spots and kept hand sewing the patterns. Sample 3 was perfect!

After crying tears of joy and dancing around like a crazy person, I set out to make a pair in leather. I embraced a glovers needle, a blunt

needle, and silk thread to hand sew the saddle stitch on the bane of my existence. I produced a pair of tabi in leather that look just like tabi! And I gained a new found appreciate for the construction of gloves.

But it bothered me that I couldn’t seem to sew them on the machine. I moped about it. Then Yoshi said the nicest thing to me: the Japanese didn’t use a machine as there weren’t any machines in the 1500s. Ah- ha! If you use period techniques, you can craft things that look period - lesson learned. My sewing is doing what it is supposed to do now that I hand sew all the tricky spots (gores don’t make me cry anymore). So if your machine is giving you fits, try hand sewing that little bit. You’ll be amazed at the results! Oh, and please bring that project to me. I want to see it and share in your joy!!

Your novice seamstress, Nicolete

this Quarter iN PeriOd (Or clOse tO it)

Oct. 9, 1635—Preacher, political activist, and linguist kicked outReligious dissident Roger Williams is banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony by the puritan General Court of Massachusetts. Williams had spoken out against the right of civil authorities to punish religious dissension and to confiscate Indian land. Williams established a settlement near Narragansett Bay (in present day Rhode Island), the home of the Indian tribe of that name. He opened the settlement to all freedom seeking peoples, and established a separation between church and state. Some of the first settlers were disenfranchised Jews, sane puritans, and the famous Anne Hutchinson. Williams named his new settlement Providence, at let it be his guide. He founded the first American Baptist Church and wrote the first dictionary of Native American language before his death.

Oct. 10, 732—Magnus’ granddad kicks Muslim buttOutside the small village of Tours, Charles Martel defeated Abd-ar-Rah-man in a decisive battle. The Muslim governor of Cordoba was killed, leading to the retreat of the Muslim armies back into Spain. The victory of Charles, the illegitimate son of Pepin I of the Franks, set the Carolingians firmly in the seat of power in Gaul. His grandson Carolus Magnus (sorry Your Excellency), consolidated that kingdom and was crowned Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor on Easter Sunday 800.

Oct.27, 1659—Massachusetts hates oatmealWilliam Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson were hanged in Boston Common for being Quakers. Trying to escape religious ersecution in England, they made the mistake of moving to the insane Puritan capitol of the world. The Massachusetts General Court had banished all Quakers on pain of death the year before. Fortunately, the Quaker religion survived. Quakers helped establish the Underground Railroad, the Suffrage Movement and a factory in Deodar (Cedar Rapids, IA.)

Oct. 31, 1517—Halloween festivities begin with heresyAt the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther nailed his 95

theses to the door. Amongst his complaints against the Catholic Church was a condemnation of indulgences, charging money for forgiveness of sins. Luther was eventually tried at the Diet of Worms (pronounced Verms) in 1521, by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Although convicted, he was granted asylum by many of the German Princes, and was able to continue his theological writing. He never wished to be anything but a good Catholic, however, after being excommunicated, his group of followers became known as Lutherans, the first Protestant Religion.

November 13th, 1312. One of the most successful of English rulers was the son of one of the least effective, Edward II. Perhaps Edward III owed his force of character to his mother, the beautiful Queen Isabella, daughter of Philip IV of France and sister of three French kings in succession. In her own lifetime a chronicler referred to her as ‘that harridan’ and ‘Jezebel’ and in the 18th century the poet Thomas Gray called her ‘She-Wolf of France with unrelenting fangs’.

November 5, 1520. Christian II Crowned King of Sweden. Already king of Denmark and Norway, Christian conquered Sweden as well. But the subsequent massacre of his opponents led to a Swedish war of liberation, which was achieved a mere three years later.

November 16, 1200: Saint Hugh of Lincoln Hugh, a French-born bishop of Lincoln, England, was the first Carthusian monk to be canonized.

December 1, 1170: Becket returns to Canterbury After establishing an uneasy reconciliation with Henry II, the Archbishop returned to his See, ending a six-year-long self-imposed exile. But doom awaited at the end of the year.

December 25, 800: Charlemagne crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Consolidating a large portion of Europe under his rule, promoting learning, and instituting innovative administrative concepts.

December 29, 1170: Murder in the Cathedral Acting on the frustrated outburst of King Henry II, four knights burst into Canterbury Cathedral and struck down Archbishop Thomas Á Becket. The knights fled, and Henry would later do public penance for his ill-considered words that ultimately ended the quarrel between one-time friends.
