The report of PIANC WG33 (2002) states thatfender manufacturers should publish theirdatum (mean) performance values according tothe following operating conditions:

    Compression Angle: 0°Stabilised Temperature: 23°C ±5°CImpact Velocity: 150mm/s

TEMPERATURE FACTOR (TF)Temperature has the greatest influence onfender performance. When rubber gets hotter it also gets softer, resulting in a lower reaction force and energyabsorption (TF < 1). As rubber is cooled it getsstiffer, resulting in a higher energy absorptionand reaction force (TF > 1).

TEMPERATURE FACTOR (TF)Ship hull curvature may cause the elementarray to compress to different extents acrosstheir width (sectionwise) or along their length(lengthwise). The effect of angularcompression on performance is usuallycalculated for each specific case. The sectionwise angular factor, at a typical

PERFORMANCE TOLERANCE (E, R)Bencros have been testing fenders for many yearsand guarantee a (2-sigma) –10% energy toleranceand +10% reaction tolerance pass rate for new BMEelements.High end (+ve) energy and low end (-ve) reactiontolerances are beneficial and are not ordinarily usedas pass criteria. Verification testing is optional andagreed for each project.

VELOCITY FACTOR (VF)Rubber is a visco-elastic material whichmeansit gets stiffer the faster it is compressed, orsofter the more slowly it is compressed.Velocity factors are based on an initial impactspeed which linearly reduces to zero as theship is decelerated. When the initial impactspeed is greater than 150mm/s, VF > 1. Whenthe initial impact speed is less than 150mm/s,VF < 1.

Bencros fenders use high quality NaturalRubber (NR) and Styrene Butadiene Rubber(SBR) blends for their strength and durability inmarine environments.

Compounds meet or exceed internationalrequirements including PIANC, EAU-E62 andASTM D2000.

The material properties list common teststandards andmethods. Tests are conducted onlaboratory made specimens under controlledconditions.

Alternative test methods and specialcompounds in EPDM and Polyurethane are alsoavailable. Please ask Bencros for details.

Bencros NR-SBR rubber compounds can bespecified for ASTM D2000 complience, as

commonly requested on many North Americanprojects. Typical compound examples include:

Bencros fenders are quality controlled at allstages of manufacture. We operate to thestandard tolerances below, but in specific cases

more stringent tolerancemay be agreed. Pleasediscuss your requirements with Bencros.

    1. Dimensions are stated at 23°C unless otherwise agreed.2. Whichever is greater3. Non-cumulative when drilled4. L ≤ 2000mm (for L > 2000mm, please ask Bencros)

    1. Refer to fender performal test protocol2. Deflection is not a pass/fail criterion.3. Performance verification testing is charged as an optional extra.

Each fender is given a unique serial number, traceable to manufacturing and material records.

Fenders are tested under coaxial (vertical) compression.

Pre-conditioning involves at least three initial compression cycles3 followed by a recover period ofat least one hour before measured testing.

Compression speed is 2–8 cm/min (nominally 1mm/s for ‘constant velocity’ CV-method tests).

    Test temperature is 23°C ±5°C.4

Deflection is expressed in metres (m) and is measured at increments of 0.01H to 0.05H (where H isthe uncompressed height of the fender).

Reaction force is expressed in kilonewtons (kN) and is recorded to at least a deflection at which thepermitted minimum energy absorption is achieved.5

Energy absorption is expressed in kilonewton-metres (kNm) and is calculated as the integral ofreaction and deflection, calculated using Simpson’s Rule.

The maximum or high-end reaction force should not be more than the fender’s mean ratedreaction plus tolerance. The minimum or low-end energy absorption should not be less than thefender’s mean rated energy minus tolerance. Deflection is not a pass/fail requirement.6,7

10% of the ordered fenders (rounded up to a whole unit) are verification tested.

If any sample does not meet the specificatons, sampling is increased to 20% of fenders (roundedup to a unit). Non-conforming fenders are rejected and segregated.

If further samples do notmeet the specifications, all remaining fenders will be tested. Only fendersverified as meeting the performance will be delivered.

    1. Moulded fenders include BME Elements, BAS and BAP Arch Fenders,. BME Elements are tested in pairs.

    2. PIANC refers to the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses, Report of Working Group 33 (Guidelines for thedesign of Fender systems: 2002, Appendix A).

    3. Reaction force is not recorded for pre-compression testing.

    4. Where ambient temperature is outside of this range, fenders will be normalised to this temperature range in a conditioning roomfor an appropriate period (dependent upon fender size and as defined by PIANC). Alternatively the performance values will becorrected according to Bencros published temperature correction factors.

    5. Reaction force (and corresponding calculated energy absorption) shall be the exact recorded value and not corrected or otherwiseadjusted for speed correction unless required by the project specifications.

    6. Permitted values for reaction and energy are catalogue values and applicable manufacturing tolerances.

    7. The deflection at which minimum energy permitted energy absorption is achieved may differ from the nominal “rated” deflectionindicated in the catalogue for the relevant fender type.

    8. Standard PIANC testing is charged in additon to the fender price. Additional testing frequency, third party witnessing andtemperature conditioning costs are also charged for.

Bencros testing protocol for high performancesolid rubber dock fenders1 is adopted fromPIANC2.

The test press is equipped with load anddeflection transponders which are calibratedanually.

Fenders are pre-conditioned and thermallystabilised before 10% of fenders areperformance tested. Aditionally, all fenders witha nominal rated reaction of 1000kN are pre-conditioned before shipment.

Please ask Bencros for further details.
