The big day officially begins as the church bells
ring out at 2.45pm and we wait for the arrival of
the King and Queen. No, not the ones from London,
but the ‘King and Queen’ of the Burbage
Festivities!
Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the Ceremony will arrive in their
horse-drawn carriage at 3.00pm. All children will be able to wave their flags
(provided free!) as their majesties parade past, entering through the Castle
Entrance at the southern corner of Eastcourt, closely watched by the Royal
Clockwork Guards.
All guests to this most auspicious of occasions will be able to have their
photograph taken at the Aunt Sally Royal Photo Shoot, and will be
entertained throughout the day by a fantastic Swing Band
The celebrations will commence with Razamatazz, the Children’s
Entertainers who appeared last year, followed by the Punch & Judy Show.
Then there will be a Family Scooter Relay Race: It is an obstacle course laid
out around the Palace, with teams of four family members! There will be
prizes for First - including a Knighthood, Second and Third place, as well as
Best Dressed Family Prize and Best Dressed Scooter Prize.
You can get in the mood with period dress; come along in clothes from any
period from the 1950’s – if you can remember that far back - to today’s
modern trends. You will also be able to view pictures from the children’s
Colouring Competition. Entry forms will be distributed through the local
“Party in Saturday 2nd

schools. Bring your favourite home-made
cakes for the Cake Competition! Everyone,
young or old, can enter
There will also be lots of different ways to
keep the children busy with the Tug o’ War,
Bat the Rat, Smash the Royal Crockery, Face Painting, Bouncy Castle and
many other games.
Bring a picnic and something to sit on, as the grass area will be our picnic
site and there is no formal sitting-down time. You can eat when you like!
There will be a Quiet Area, serving Afternoon Cream Tea and Cake for
those who remember The Coronation or those who prefer a more sedate
celebration.
There will be Candy Floss, Ice Cream and Soft Drinks available. Later on
from about 6.00pm there will be hot food with our two hog roasts and Thai
Food (Veggie option).
There will be some sparkling entertainment in the evening and the bar will
be open all day until 11.30pm.
See you there! Your Royal Party Contacts:

Your Letters to the Burbage News
Race For Life
Hello! This year I’m taking part in The Race For Life at Newbury Showground on the 8th July. I want to raise as much money as possible and in order to do this I need a lot of sponsors. I am racing for my Nan, who lost her battle against cancer in 2004, and my Auntie Tracey, who also lost her battle the following year, when I was only 10. I love and miss them both and want to help other people who are fighting this disease.
Please, please sponsor me to help researchers find a cure. I want to collect as much money as possible and you can help by following the link (Shortened here by BNET, and also on the Burbage Village website) http://goo.gl/FQZ3G
or use your mobile phone and text: QNBW83 (plus the amount in pounds, e.g. £1, £5, £12 etc) to 70070 Every amount counts and together we can beat cancer
Thank you
Jasmine Kirby
Jubilee Flowers
The Church Flower Arrangers are planning to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by decorating the Church with flowers. We hope you will have time to visit the Church: The arrangements will be on display from Saturday 2nd June. Let’s hope for good weather for our celebrations Any donations for the cost of the flowers will be gratefully received

Name and Gain
Dear Burbage News In this day and age with so many warnings to look out for scams and dodgy collectors, it beggars belief that someone would think stating ‘collecting for charity’ is enough to make us part from our hard earned coffers. I will only give if I know where it is going so please, make sure any fund raising event names the charity. That’s the only way they are likely to gain my support
Details withheld on request
The Burbage News would like to apologise
for any article or advertisement that did not
display the name of a chosen charity. We
usually insist on knowing who the
beneficiary will be, and if it does not appear
in the Burbage News for some reason
(usually late copy) it will be found on the
village website

Filthy Pigs
Dear Burbage News, I wonder if the time may be right to mention the filthy individuals who seem to live in Burbage these days & who continue to misappropriate their dog mess for all to walk in to? I live in Ailesbury Way and this morning on the pavement, someone had left a pack of dog mess. I suppose, given the benefit of doubt, they could have dropped it. However, I don't think so; it was too large to miss. ! Perhaps these dirty individuals will be happy when we have to empower "Plastic Policemen" to look out for " filthy litter louts" and then deal with them immediately by way of an instant fine, then perhaps, they will be happy that people who can no longer be responsible for their own actions, simply have to be monitored by big brother. These filthy pigs will have their own undoing. By the way, since when has it been a good idea for children to be "walking" very large dogs which, if they went out of control, there is no way these children could hold them back? What would their caring parents say then? What "Dangerous Dogs Act?"!
Kind regards

After an absence of more than 10 years in the village, the scout group successfully restarted 12 months ago in May 2011 and now proudly celebrates its 1st anniversary. Over 50 youngsters from the village and local area have been meeting at the East Sands Scout Hall, which recently escaped being re-developed as housing.
The group started with just Cubs and Scouts and now also includes Beavers. It’s also the shared home of the District Explorer Scouts and therefore provides a venue for fun, adventure, team work and much more from the ages of 6 years right through to 18 and beyond, and all on our door step. So what have we been doing in the last year? Hopefully you will have seen us making bird boxes at the Brain Tumour charity day, or perhaps painting the outside of the scout hall, or did you see us hosting the District Go Kart Championships in East Sands or helping plant the Diamond Jubilee trees in the village or did you hear that we won the county Scrap Heap Challenge? And if you didn’t see us at
Savernake Forest Scout Group celebrates First Peter Shellswell,
any of these, perhaps you saw us hiking back from Pewsey Vale one frosty night or learning to navigate our way through wild Savernake Forest?
If you missed any of those, come and see us at the Burbage Village Fete on 30th June. We’ll have the climbing wall with us and will be daring you to feel the excitement from the adrenaline rush as you let go at the
9
top! We’ll also bring along lots of exciting games and interesting demonstrations for you to try. We have plenty more coming up too. If you are aged 6 – 8 years, perhaps you would like to join us at our annual camp, ‘Beaver Babble’, with Alice the camel! Try out some Funny Map Reading or maybe you are brave enough to come and see our dragons? If you are aged 8-10 1/2 you could take aim and try your hand at archery or track your friends using sticks and pebbles? Could you camp out under the stars or bandage your mum or dad up like an Egyptian Mummy? Or if you are aged 10½ - 14 you could be the driver of the fastest go kart on our circuit when we host the district go kart
Anniversary since the group restarted Chairman
championships? Perhaps kayaking and getting wet is for you or do you fancy trying your hand at a little backward cooking using underground ovens and open fires? If so then contact us at [email protected] or call 01672 567007. To help keep the momentum going and all the young people challenged
and excited, can you help us? We’re planning to have a metal recycling skip in June where we want you to donate your scrap metal to us so that we can raise funds for the upkeep of the hall. Could you spare 8 hours in a year to help run an evening beaver, cub or scout meeting, or perhaps just 2 hours to help us set up at the village fete? Many hands make light work, so please consider us. For those of you who have helped us and continue to do so, your time and support is truly appreciated and has helped make it the success it has become,
we thank you. Arthur, Archie, Sophie, Ebony, Oliver

Members and a new member, Keith Amiss, were welcomed to the meeting in the Village Hall on Wednesday 18 th April by the Vice- Chairman, Jill Terry. A presentation was made to Jean Bierschenk to thank her for preparing and delivering birthday cards to members on the appropriate date. The speaker, John Price, entertained the meeting with his tales of adventures over several years while he has been walking around the coast of England, Wales and Scotland, section by section. His endeavours began in Pewsey with a walk to Salisbury that extended to the coast of Devon and Cornwall, later to Kent and the east coast. He intends to walk the remaining few bleak miles in North West Scotland to complete the circuit. Highlights were the wild life he saw in its natural habitat, Lighthouses, Bridges and the many local residents who have helped his travels to lift his spirits. The next meeting is at 10.30am in the Village Hall on Wednesday 16 th May for the Annual Coffee Morning with a Bring and Buy to top up Club funds
The Diamond Jubilee Celebration Luncheon is at 12.30pm on Weds
6th June in the Village Hall.
Defibrillator Update We would like to say a massive Thank you to all that came, helped, donated and supported us at The Burbage Swish. We raised in total over £400. Congratulations to David Burton for getting the closest weight of ‘guess the weight of the cake’ of 2.25kg (4.96lb) which was 2.109kg (4.64lb) and to Mrs Stewart for winning the bottle of Taittinger champagne . We would also like to thank Pauline Flint and all at The White Hart who have raised an amazing £500 from the Thursday Quiz nights throughout February, with other donations we have now got £1000, well on our way to our next machine.
Keep an eye out for us at the Burbage summer fete on June 30th we will have some fun things organised for the children and we hope to get some first aid courses up and running in the next few months.

www.theburbagesurgery.co.uk The overall results revealed that there is overwhelming satisfaction with the service provided by the Surgery and great support for the doctors, nurses and supporting staff. We are fortunate to have such a Surgery in the Village as well as the Pharmacy which is greatly appreciated by patients.
Great Outdoors Challenge Sponsorship
Geoff Hill
Would you like to support the Save the Children Fund in its work in some of the poorest regions of the world? Its work will be particularly vital over the coming months as the ongoing drought in sub Saharan Africa is predicted to lead to mass malnutrition when of course the children will suffer worst. If so you could do so by sponsoring me in my attempt to complete “The Great Outdoors Challenge.” So what exactly is “The Great Outdoors Challenge”? The event, which takes place over the 15 days between 11th and 25th May, is an unsupported, non competitive walk across Scotland limited to 350 people either travelling alone or in groups of up to four. I will be doing it solo. Places are awarded by ballot which is only open to experienced hill walkers. Once accepted entrants plan their own route, must sign out from one of 9 places on the west coast of Scotland and reach the east coast somewhere between Fraserburgh and Arbroath and then make their way to Montrose to sign in by 25th May. I will be starting at the hamlet of Lochailort just south of Mallaig and aim to reach the east coast at Montrose itself. My route takes me via Spean Bridge, Dalwhinnie, Braemar, Brechin and finally Montrose. The complete route is 276km (171miles) long and involves 8,500m (27,600ft) of climbing and two bridgeless river crossings. Because I will be away from habitation for up to four days at a stretch I will carry up to 15kg(33lb) of clothing, camping equipment and food. At this time of year in the highlands you
have to be equipped to cope with the weather that can range from snow, to torrential rain, to blazing sun. I expect to take the whole 15 days on the crossing but hope to arrive in time for the celebration dinner on the final Friday! Please sponsor me for what I believe is a very good cause. You can do this either direct (tel : 811 424) or via my “Just Giving” webpage which is:
www.justgiving.com/Geoffrey-Hill0 Many thanks Geoff Hill

Are you interested in flower
arranging? Would like to be able to arrange flowers in your home?
I would like to start a New Look NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies)
affiliated Club in Burbage
The first step is to enquire how many people would be interested in joining the flower club, we need a minimum of 20 members to affiliate to NAFAS. Once I have a list of people interested I will arrange an evening demonstration where the Area Chairman has agreed to attend. This will give you an insight to the benefits of being affiliated to NAFAS and what can be achieved from our club. From this evening hopefully we will have a keen group of volunteers to form a committee and take this new club forward. Please register your interest by calling

website www,burbagepreschool.org.uk You are
welcome to visit us at any time. We are located
behind the primary school, however access is
via the footpath opposite the church.
Pre-school had an
exciting visitor last
month, local
Professional
Percussionist, Sacha
Johnson. Sacha did
some musical activities with the children which
included clapping games and exploring loud &
soft and fast & slow sounds. Sacha also brought
in a selection of percussion instruments that the
children had a chance to play. Pre-school would
like to thank Sacha for his time.
If you would like to find out more about Burbage
Pre-school, then prospective families are warmly
invited to our Open Afternoon on Thursday
21 st June between 12.30 and 2.30. As well as
being an ideal opportunity to find out more about
what we do at Pre-school there will also be fun
childrens’ activities and refreshments
provided.
We have had fun
celebrating Easter,
making some
feathery chick cards
and enjoying some
Easter cakes for our
refreshments. We are
now looking towards
the summer and
planning more
celebratory activities,
this time for the
Olympics and the
Diamond Jubilee.
We are hosting a
community coffee
morning and second
hand book sale on
Tuesday 15th May 10am-11:30am. All books are
50p each and there will be fresh coffee and
homemade cake for a small cost. You can stock
up for your holidays!
Our AGM is on Tuesday 8th May, 8pm at the
White Hart, Burbage. It is an excellent
opportunity to socialise with group. We'll be
providing snacks and the first drink. The whole
committee are standing down because their
children have
reached preschool age
and Tiddlywinks needs
a new committee to
carry the group forward
to the future. We have
all thoroughly enjoyed
being on the committee
and highly recommend
it. It involves a little
work but without a big
commitment. Do come
to the AGM and if
possible, consider
becoming a member;
we're friendly and it
will be a fun evening.
Our sessions are held
every Tuesday during term time from 9:30am to
11:30am at Burbage Village Hall for all
preschool aged children and their parents or
carers. It is a very friendly group with lots to
entertain the little ones and fresh coffee, cakes
and plenty of chat for the grown ups! Please do
join us if you would like to, it is a great way to
make friends. For more details contact Rachel on
07990878593. We look forward to welcoming
you soon.

Healthy Diet Rules #4 Petra Gericke
Rule – No draining breakfast “Draining breakfast”: cereals, muesli, weetabix, porridge, bread/toast Why?: All these “healthy” advertised products are too high in carbohydrates (based on 100g: Kellogs Cornflakes 84g, Quaker Porridge Oats 60g). The carbohydrates are not used up over the next few hours as you aren't exercising. Your insulin rockets and your body transforms the excess carbohydrates into fat. This is the basic building block for obesity and a variety of chronic diseases. Instead: Have a boosting breakfast made of starch-free vegetables, proteins (egg, goats/sheep’s cheese, meat, tofu) and omega 3/6/9 oil. Breakfast ideas: www.helpinghands-uk.com/Nutrition.htm
Tai Chi in Burbage -update Burbage was lucky enough to be selected by Age UK Wiltshire for a pilot series of 20 subsidised Tai Chi sessions, led by Anne Liddell, an experienced tutor. Tai Chi /Shi-ba-shi was created to improve the health and general well-being of modern society and is now practiced by millions of people around the world. Research has recently shown that it is the best exercise for older people as it improves relaxation and mobility of muscles and joints, strengthens and energises the nervous system and helps dissolve tension away. Tai Chi at Burbage follows a simplified set of movements to very peaceful background sounds and music. We all move according to our own ability and those who prefer sit in a chair to do the exercises. The sessions started in mid January and support has grown rapidly. We now have around 20 members –men and women – and there is the chance for a hot drink and chat after the exercises. As the pilot has been so successful, it has been decided to continue the sessions after the pilot sponsorship ends. We are very grateful to Age UK Wiltshire for starting up and sponsoring the pilot and now look forward to our club continuing to flourish in the future. New members will always be welcome – there is plenty of room in the Village Hall! If you are over 55 and would like to enjoy relaxing and toning up in a friendly atmosphere, why not come along to Burbage Village Hall on a Thursday morning from 10.00 –11.00am and give it a try? £2 per session Hope to see you there!

Revd Robert Grist [email protected]
01672 811431
Revd Robert Grist, Assistant Curate writes:
Dear Everybody, What a difference a few days can makeK. The week before Easter my world was turned upside-down by the unexpected and untimely death of my dear mother. At the time it made it difficult for me to reconcile the emptiness I was feeling inside with the triumphant emptiness of Jesus’ tomb. And then, after some time off work, I returned only to find that two of my three senior managers were leaving the business (one had gone already) now throwing my whole work situation into confusion. It’s at times such as these that all any of us can do is to reach out in faith to the one who is unchanging, unfailing and dependable – as the Psalmist puts it; he is our rock, our fortress, deliverer, shield and refuge. (Psalm 8:2) And he is still our hope. At the end of this month we remember another day which turned the world upside-down for a lot of people. For we celebrate the festival of Pentecost - the fiftieth day after Easter. The word literally means ‘fiftieth’ and, as a multiple of seven, is a special number in biblical terms. Seven has always indicated God’s fullness or completion; in the Genesis account, God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, when it was complete. And so as a multiple of seven plus one day, Pentecost also points beyond the fullness of God’s revelation in Jesus to the Holy Spirit. At Christmas we celebrate God the Father’s wonderful gift of his Son; at Easter we celebrate Christ’s triumph over death; and at Pentecost, the third most important festival for the Christian Church, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit who gives the gift of faith.

The Ladies Group will be attending ‘Releasing your full potential’ with Mrs Bryony Springate on Saturday 26
th May 2012
Bryony will cover the following during the day: What traps you and stops you firing on all cylinders? How can you be set free to realise all that God has for you? Through the day, we shall be looking at the “answers” to the two questions, using examples from scripture, and also looking at ways to help ourselves. There will be prayer offered at the end of each session, and hopefully you will be encouraged and enthused! The day course starts at 10am with worship. Refreshments are served midway through the morning, and lunch is provided at 1pm. Lunch, is included in the £20 charge for the day and although Harnhill do provide a vegetarian option, they are unable to cater for any other diet. We will be stopping for a meal on the way back from Harnhill. Please book your place with Debbie Brown on 01672 810853.
On the first Pentecost (Acts 2), we read how the Holy Spirit came powerfully upon the disciples. Such was the revelation that ‘about three thousand’ were baptised that day. This tradition continued through history and is the very reason we also call it Whit Sunday (after ‘White Sunday’) when those newly baptised into the church would dress in white. Pentecost celebrates the birthday of the Christian Church - the Church which survives to this very day! So why not join us on May 27 this year at Burbage for a very special celebration? And so, on reflection, I thank God that a few days can indeed make a difference. Because in a few days at Easter the world was indeed turned upside downKnot just for me, but for everybody! And we are reminded of this right through until Pentecost and we continue to celebrateK. HE IS RISEN INDEED. Alleluia! With every blessing Rob

A funny thing happened on the way to….! Aka Wildlife Watching Andrew Dawes
BBC NHU Radio researcher/producer
As I crossed the garden the other day, there on the lawn was a large shiny beetle. It was a black oil beetle Meloe proscarabaeus. Now, there are two interesting things about that. Firstly I’d never seen an oil beetle in the garden before, and secondly it was a female and mortally wounded. Turning round to get my camera for a photo, I turned back to the beetle only to discover it had disappeared.
Was I seeing things? Well no, in reality this oil beetle was probably dropped by a passing bird and while my back was turned, the bird nipped back to retrieve it. Logically then, the oil beetle must have come from somewhere nearby. So the following day I headed off to see if I could find myself a live oil beetle. Sadly at the time of writing, I’ve failed to do so in the Grafton area, but over the coming months I shall look again. There are four species of oil beetle in Britain, and Wiltshire is a good place to find the 2 common ones. The black, and the similar looking violet oil beetle Meloe violaceus. Adults are about 2 centimetres long and when laden with eggs the female can be twice the size of the male. They are active on warm sunny days between
March and June often seen awkwardly trundling about feeding on celandines (picture below). I was told a useful tip recently, look for swarms of micro flies around celandine and probably somewhere nearby will be a beetle. If disturbed, oil beetles can ooze a noxious oily fluid from their knee joints, used to deter predators, and from which they got their name. The male is smaller than the female and has a kinked antenna, used to grip the female when mating. Look along pathways or clearings as the beetles like to use bare soil both for digging holes to lay eggs, and to catch the suns warmth. The life cycle of both these oil beetles is one of the most extraordinary life cycles of any British insect. Living only a few months, the newly emerged adult’s mate, after which the female digs a burrow into which she will lay a few thousand eggs. The tiny larvae, known as triungulins, emerge, climb onto the flowers of celandines, buttercups and dandelions and wait to attach themselves onto the backs of a solitary mining bee. Once on the bee, they are then taken back to the bees nest, where the triungulin consumes the egg and pollen supply of the host bee. It then pupates and emerges as an adult beetle the following year. A female oil beetle can lay 40,000 eggs in her lifetime, but only a few will survive. So next time you are out and about
maybe have a look for these fantastic beetles as I will do on warm spring days. A useful identification guide and details of a national oil beetle survey can be found on the Buglife website: www,buglife.org.uk

'Just good friends,' is the common statement
made by many couples who later get married.
This was the way that Steve and Helen Colling
described the beginning of their relationship.
They actually met in 1980 while they were both
working in Germany. At that time Steve was
stationed there in the Army and Helen was a
teacher in one of the Joint Services Children's
Schools. 'We didn't rush into it,' Steve assured
me. They were eventually married at St.
Mary's Church, Thatcham in 1993.
Steve was brought up in Litchfield,
Staffordshire. He told me that he 'ran
away,' to join the army at 16! First he
went to the Army Sixth Form College
before officer training at Sandhurst. He
joined The Royal Electrical and
Mechanical Engineers and gained his
degree in electrical engineering at
Shrivenham before going on to become
a Chartered Engineer and, much later, a
Fellow of The Institute of Engineering and
Technology. He explained that one of the most
interesting placements during his training was
to the Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnell.
He seemed quite disappointed that Helen
wouldn’t let him buy one on retirement!
Helen spent her childhood in Coventry going on
to Reading to undertake teacher training at
Meet Your Community – Steve and Helen Colling
37
Bulmershe College. She then returned to
Coventry to teach infant and primary aged
children for four years. Then for ten tears she
worked with the Services Children's
Organisation at Soest in Germany, which was
where she and Steve first met. She then
returned to this area and taught at a school in
Greenham, near Newbury before marrying.
Steve and Helen told me that they enjoy
travelling and visiting other parts of the World.
This for many servicemen and women is one of
the perks of military life. Steve talked with
enthusiasm of postings to Germany, Cyprus, the
Falklands, Australia and the Gulf. They were
incredibly lucky to be posted to a Canadian
Forces base just North of Toronto for their first
posting together and over a 2 year period
travelled extensively in Canada and the USA.
This was followed by a move to Arborfield. It
was their final posting that brought them to live
in Burbage as Steve needed to commute to
Andover and Bristol.
Steve's Army career ended last year with some
months of resettlement training. He spent some
time at Manchester Business School going first
to Salamanca and then Berlin on language
courses. I have to admit that his Spanish is now
better than mine! They both told me that they
are very fond of Spain and have travelled there
quite often. We often talk about places we are
both fond of in Spain, such as Barcelona.
Since her retirement from teaching Helen has
been able to develop her interest in art work.
She graduated with a diploma in stitched
textiles after 7 years part time study at Windsor
College. She now belongs to The Society of
Design Craftsmen and was recently elected to
Member status. She has exhibited her work in
London at the Mall Galleries and participated in
the Marlborough Open Studios. You can find
out more about her work at: http://okra-
textiles.com/artists/helen-colling. During May
Helen's work will be on display as part of the
Newbury Open Studios scheme see: http://
www.open-studios.org.uk/ for opening times
and other details.
The church and village have 'looked after us
very well' Steve told me. Life in the church is
not just 'singing and praying' but much more
and through it they have got to know many
people and become involved in many interests
and activities including ballroom dancing and
'Fill The Gap' You will see that Helen now
writes the reports for 'Woman's Own', which
you will see on another page of the Burbage
News and shares her interest in needlework
through 'It's A Stitch Up!' Steve successfully
organised a recent jazz concert featuring The
Helen Barrett Trio to raise funds for the
church's project to buy seeds and tools for the
people of Sudan. He also enjoy pottering in the
garden, photography and making furniture.
Steve and Helen have really become members
of the Burbage community.
In conclusion, I must make mention of another
member of The Colling household. He is one of
the biggest feline balls of fir that I have ever
seen, the 13 year old Oscar. You may meet him
if you go to view Helen's textile work, that's if
he can be bothered to wake up and greet you!

By Gavin Ketchen, Chairman.
Dear Members and readers We are currently holding back on the planned improvements until we have re-built our reserves following the recent battering by the costs mentioned last month. We intend to go ahead with the changes, preferably sooner rather than later, but to do so means we will have to work harder to raise a few more pounds for these projects We are still pursuing various new ideas and once all the formalities are completed, we should have a brand new gaming machine in, to complement the existing one What would YOU like to see at the British Legion Club? We have had many great suggestions and over the last year, most of them have been tried and a lot of them were very popular. We could do with some new ideas, please! After all, it is YOUR Club so tell us what you want to see One idea is to hold Whist or Bridge nights and have either individual players or teams to play in-house, or at other reasonably local Clubs. Diamond Jubilee Trees Geoff Hill
You will be pleased to learn that despite the very dry conditions since November virtually all to the trees you planted have successfully established themselves. Some are already growing strongly and most of the rest are in leaf. There are half a dozen that are still bare, although even these have buds and should flourish following the recent rain, and only one looks as if it may not have made it. This is a critical year for the trees. Although we have had a lot of rain recently this has not penetrated that far into the soil. As a result the trees could become short of water very rapidly if we get periods with no rain during the rest of the spring and summer. You could help enormously over the next few months if during any week without rain you could give your tree a bucket or watering can full of water around its roots. I will take responsibility for watering the Jubilee Oak. Thanks

everybody, and all external organisations
and individuals are encouraged to attend.
This year, less than 20 people turned up,
which is very disappointing, but part of the
discussion we had centred on the fact that
most people are unaware of this meeting and
what it is meant to achieve. We will
continue to work on ways to improve both
the content and communication of the aims
and objectives of the meeting. Hopefully
next year’s meeting will have greater
success.
However, whilst the parish meeting is one
way of meeting your council, and the
monthly council meetings are another, we
are also in attendance at the monthly
Saturday Markets that have successfully
started in the Village Hall. More details of
this event can be found elsewhere in this
magazine, but feel free to come along and
say hello.
The new council working groups that we
have established continue to work well –
planning, maintenance and governance
issues are handled by sub-groups of the
council who then make recommendations to
the full council to vote on. It means that
issues can be properly studied and debated
Burbage Parish Council www.burbage-pc.org.uk
and informed decisions
reached.
The Localism Act came
into law in 2011 – this is
intended to give local
councils more power and
authority in decisions
making issue that affect
their community. There are
a lot of things to learn, both legally and
operationally, and I am delighted to report
that your councillors will be undertaking
Wiltshire Council approved training courses
over the coming year to make sure that we
operate both legally and to best practice and
procedure.
As you may be aware there will be a street
party in June to celebrate the Queen’s
Jubilee. This is not a council organised
initiative but is being organised by a
separate group of volunteers, again more
details in other parts of the magazine. Your
council voted to purchase commemorative
coins to be given to children of the village as
a memento from the Royal Jubilee.
We will again be entering the Best Kept
Village competition. This is not a “beauty
contest” but a chance to show the judges
that we care about our village – we can all
help by minimising litter, dog mess and
general rubbish that is strewn around.

[email protected]. A full list of
councillors names, addresses and telephone
numbers are also on the web site, or
alternatively they are also listed on the
notice board at the Post Office and Londis
