Rickey Bates and Gary Dimartine were two of the heaviest hitters in BMX today. Together they could ride around an entire city for days just to do one thing. Find the best setup possible. Then smoke a blunt. In this picture you see a lot of “shit”. To Rickey and Gary this was the perfect setup. Nobody around to fuck with them. Nobody to yell at them to get off the roof of the UNIT or Paulzilla’s house. Or take the grind box off the mini ramp and some how make it work as “spine roof-gap to the UNIT gap-to smith grind”. Lastly, Nobody to tell them they are doing the wrong trick with the wrong camera. I wasn’t present for this picture, but I spent enough time with the both them to know that Gary is screaming “Fuck Yeah”... Rickey is riding with honor, f inding the best

spots for him and his friends. Trails, street. skate park. to dub. to the bar.. Just as long as you wanted to go ride.

If there is one piece of advice I can give to the BMX community, or to anyone living in the “free” world is that you can’t afford to go to prison... Whether it’s f inancially or emotionally. I can honestly say that doing time will change your life, forever. Accepting one’s own mistakes and shortcomings that lead to imprisonment is what can make or break you. Having your loved ones, friends, and BMX bike pulled from under your feet like a rug only increases the burden: prison is nothing short of hell on earth… well, depending on the things that are important in your life. The harsh reality, even in the United States, is that once you are an inmate, you can be disposed of like a piece of trash. I witnessed a 50-year-old DUI offender f latline from a heart attack only to have an ambulance arrive 20 minutes later after you jump

Weighing your options, deciding what is in your best interest, is something we do every day of our lives. When you’re getting ready to go to a bar I ask that you think twice about drinking and driving; when you are contemplating using any drug, stop and ref lect on this article.Every single person I have spoken to in jail who has a drug addiction told me they are constantly chasing their f irst high. The endless path of destruction begins at the top of this massive mountain and the only way down is to ‘eat shit’.Getting back up, per se, from an alcohol or drug addiction is not easy. If you’ve been riding for some years then you know where I’m coming from with this comparison. In case you don’t get it, the more you fall on your ass, the harder it becomes to get up off the ground.Here are some words of wisdom to help keep yourself straight; say no to drugs. The old cliché is right, there isn’t a single positive result from doing or selling drugs. Almost 70% of the prison population are drug offenders, and that is a statistical fact.If I were to theorise, I would say nearly all of the prison system is full because of drugs and alcohol in one way or another.Crazy scenarios will indeed transpire if people are getting fucked up or selling drugs, this I can promise. And remember, I will not tell a lie. Do please take my perspective into consideration for I am only trying to pass on my knowledge of drugs, alcohol and prison. With a single blink of an eye your life can be f lipped, folded or torn. And there’s a good chance you might not

even remember what happened. All it takes is one turn of the key after a night of drinking, one hit of cocaine, popping a pill or selling a bag of weed to a friend to land you in prison. If you live to ride and ride to live, then you’ll do what ever necessary to keep that lifeline open.Above all, love, family and friends are irreplaceable, our two wheeled machines will be missed and father time is winding his watch at a million miles per second. We are all guilty of taking for granted the simple things in life.Without a doubt I have learned a valuable lesson through this experience. Growing and smoking marijuana may not be frowned upon by a lot of people, but it has made my current state of life unbearable at times. We all make mistakes, what you intend to do with these errors in judgement is what can def ine your personal integrity.As our internal clocks keep ticking, our lives consist of questions and answers, lefts and rights, highs and lows. This was one of those picture-perfect blue-sky southern California days we dreamed about when we were kids reading BMXA magazine

back in the day. Late summer 1988, a vert ramp somewhere just north of San Diego and south of Leucadia, home of Ron Wilkerson and co, and Chris

and I went on a photo shoot-slash-bike test on Ron’s brand new Wilkerson Airlines bike. Good times. Lee Reynolds came along for the ride as well, and

busted out the best step-thru airs I’ve ever seen. No-one did them like Lee... no-one.

With an odd attraction to the female foot, and an overwhelming knowledge of cannabis; it’s easy to say there’s never a dull moment when hanging out with Marcas Grubbs. The curly haired Indiana native has never ceased to amaze me when it comes to his riding. He has the ability to pull some of the most technically sound lines, while being able to man up and hop on a chest height ledge. After knowing him for a few years I discovered how talented the guy was. However, he still seemed a bit off kilter to me. Not in a bad way though. I thought it was hilarious how much he likes girl’s feet, and it was the icing on the cake when I found out his front teeth are fake. At some points I’ve seen him take his

teeth out just to get a laugh out of people. The guy only gets more farfetched as the story continues. He works as a butler/maid in a Victorian Mansion that was built in 1897. How weird is that? With that being said, let’s get a closer look into the life of Marcas Grubbs

About ten yearsWhen and why did you decide to come to Louisville?After high school I was travelling down to ride the park a lot and staying with a buddy of mine when I had a day or two off. Back then the scene was a little different and seemed like more people were into having fun. So naturally I enjoyed leaving small town Indiana and staying close to the huge skate park. Plus there was a lot of street I’d never ridden before. Eventually I met a weird dude from Alabama that had just moved to Louisville and had an extra room. So I saved up, found a job and moved in. that house was dubbed “The Ratty House”, for good reason. It worked out pretty good though because Barlow was into f ilming a lot. We made a short video and I wish I still had it. It’s out there somewhere.You’ve been making a lot of moves this year. Where have you been lately?This year I was lucky enough to go to Mexico City with WeThePeople, it was my f irst time to a non-English speaking country so that was intense, and it was Mexico City so that was also pretty intense. I also got to go to northern California with We The People and stayed in Portland a few days. Loved Cali and Portland is always awesome. I also got to go to Perm, Russia. This was a pretty random and free chance to go so I did. Perm is a sister city of Louisville and they built a replica of our skate park that was way sketchier and a little smaller, but super rad. I went on that trip with less than ten bucks and came back and still had two, haha!How’d you get this awesome job working in a mansion?Kinda weird. One of my buddies, Steve, got the job randomly meeting the owner at a bar or something somewhere. Steve tells me how badass this mansion is and how I should come get drunk one night at the fully loaded bar downstairs, complete with pool table and hot tub. So I said, fuck yea. I met the owner, we got along pretty well. I hung out a couple days and did my laundry and forgot to take it with me. I hadn’t talked to Steve that night so I went there the next day and the owner told me about how Steve had gone crazy

It’s a bed and breakfast so there are people that come in from all over the place to stay. Especially around derby time, and when there are different events around the city going on. So when the people come in I show them to their room and help them with their shit. Then I help make, and serve breakfast in the morning at 9 am. After breakfast I clean up everything and set it all back up. Then when people check out I clean up everything, change the sheets, make the shit out of the bed, and clean the bathroom and set it all back up. Make sure they got towels and soap and shit.How much weed do you smoke in a day?That’s a hard question. I like to smoke the tastiest I can f ind. It’s kind of expensive around here, and there’s a lot of bullshit cheap schwag. The best is when your friends all have some, and you don’t have to share all of yours. This doesn’t seem to be a problem on the West Coast since their laws are a lot more tolerant. Therefore the weed is a lot better, cheaper, and plentiful. This alone makes me really want to move out West.Care to explain your foot fetish to the world?I guess I don’t care to, ha! Fuck it. I believe I was born with this fetish. I can remember being pretty young and not knowing why I enjoyed it, goddamn, haha. But it’s just something different I f ind attractive about a pretty lady that most dudes don’t care to notice(laughter) I’ve known you as a more technical rider that lays low to the ground, but lately you’ve been doing some gnarly moves. What’s up with that?I don’t know. I’m pretty picky about spots I f ilm stuff on. I’m real into set ups. I like f inding perfect set ups for ideas I’ve had, but it doesn’t happen all the time. It’s real fun searching for stuff. Sometimes it’s hard to get straight out of a car and do some banger move while you haven’t even really ridden. What’s the sketchiest situation you’ve been in?There are a lot of sketchy situations I’ve been in, but at

the moment, not one particular moment stands out. From getting drunk in an escorts hotel room and getting super ratty, to meeting crack whores on a weekly basis while riding my bike around the city. I’m waiting for the moment I get into something real bad, some wrong place at the wrong time shit. This city can be pretty sketchy.Is Chester Blacksmith your brother?I wish! That dudes the best. I’ve been on a lot of trips with that dude. It’s always fun, and he always does crazy shit!When are you gonna bring back the old Grubbs that x-up grinded down rails?I wish! It’s been a while. Back then our handlebars were tiny. They were easy to x-up. Plus, I didn’t do hang f ives then. Now when I put a peg up there it just gets in the way. Maybe one day I’ll f ind a good rail, and bust it out.You say you grew up riding with Metal Bikes’, Chris Wilson. Do you think you guys share the same style?I think we do a lot of the same tricks, but that’s because we learned ‘em at the same time. We def initely have a different style. He does crazy opposite grinds and silly shit down rails. I miss riding with him all the time.
