BMWMCC 2015 RIDE BOOKThe BMWMCC 2015 Ride Book provides information about rides and events of interest to members of the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado (BMWMCC). Distribution is intended for use only by members of the BMWMCC. Specific details and extent of organization of each ride may vary and are subject to change. • Arrive prepared and on time with a full gas tank.• Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss the route, rest and fuel stops, and

hand signals (see diagrams on MSF website). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style.

    • Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally no more than five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider.

    • Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. The ride leader should carry a cell phone and should make his cell number known to each rider.

    • Ride information. The staggered riding formation (see diagram on MSF website) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion and if you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled.

    • Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so he/she may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

    • If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.

    • For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

As you look this 2015 Ride Book over, if you are a newly signed up member, welcome to the Club. If you’re thinking about joining and someone gave you this copy of our ride book, I hope this gives you an idea about the rides and events we do. We realize that this book is often the face of our Club when people are thinking about joining and our members put a lot of time and effort into making it a quality product. Three of our very special members put this book together: John Coker, Ride Coordinator; Cathy Catrell, Newsletter Editor; and Keren Kilgore, Webmaster and Ride Book Editor. Yes, both women are excellent riders and long-term members too. The BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado (BMWMCC) has been around continuously since 1972. Staying around and active for over four decades takes a lot of work, especially when it’s an all-volunteer organization. Motorcycle riders buy different brands of bikes from time to time and tend to look for clubs within their current brand. Club members come and go and if clubs don’t work at it, they can just gradually disappear. Simply stated, for a motorcycle club to stay around over 40 years, it has to offer more than just brand ownership. That’s where benefits that keep members in touch with each other come into play.

At BMWMCC, the Ride Book is often the first glimpse riders get of us and that’s one reason we invest so much time and effort with it. Still, the book is just a start. We follow it up with weekly breakfasts, lots of pick-up rides, monthly dinner

meetings, a high-quality monthly newsletter, heavy involvement with our local dealers, social events, our annual Top ‘O The Rockies Rally (recognized as one of the two top BMW club rallies in the country, which last year drew riders from 37 states and 6 Canadian Provinces), charitable support and more. We enjoy great relationships with our local dealers who sponsor rides and offer discounts to card-carrying members, just for starters. Foothills BMW/Triumph Motorcycles and BMW of Denver both offer a year of free Club membership with every new and used bike sale. Dealer parts discounts for Club members often cover the annual Club membership fee. The bottom line is this. BMWMCC is community connected and very active. There is literally something to do here every week of the year. Join us. Join in, and if you like what you see, consider volunteering, too.

    APRIL 4, 2015WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

8:00 AM Continental Breakfast at Foothills Motorcycles9:00 AM Ride Leaves From Foothills Motorcycles, Lakewood

Sanctuary: 1946 County Road 53, Keenesburg, CO 80643

If you missed this last year, you won’t want to miss it again. This early season ride is the perfect time to visit the Sanctuary. It is cool enough for the animals to all be out of their dens and the spectators to have the perfect viewing conditions. You will get to see literally dozens

of tigers, lions, black and brown bears, wolves and foxes. The information boards posted along the mile-long elevated walkway tell you the names of the individual animals and how they came to be rescued by the Sanctuary. This Keenesburg facility is the largest facility of its kind in North America and we are very fortunate to have it so close by. It is supported entirely by donations and I can assure you that no one complained about the modest $15 admission fee once they have had a close-up look at these magnificent creatures. This isn’t a zoo. These animals roam free individually and in prides and packs over large open spaces.

Bring your camera, a hat, sunscreen, a bottle of water, and your walking shoes. Bring the family. Kids and adults will be dazzled. We will arrive at about

10:00 am, spend three hours at the Sanctuary, ride ten minutes into Keenesburg to the historic (101-year-old) Pepper Pod restaurant for lunch before heading home.

APRIL 4-10, 2015 BIG BEND ‘ER BUST!

    TEXAS

7:30 AM Ozzie’s, Morrison The trip will consume 6 or 7 days. Big Bend National Park is 835 miles from Morrison. The plan is to take two full days to get there with a little exploring on the way and 1.5 days to get home. On the way we’ll have the opportunity to visit the Capulin Volcano in New Mexico; in Texas, the Guadalupe Mountains in the west and the Palo Duro Canyon where the Comanche’s fought their last battle against the army in 1874; the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains, and, with a little luck, the Camel Ranch. We can choose which of these to see or skip as we travel.

I am riding a BMW1150GS with Tourance tires. Knobbies are not required. Be prepared to ride a total of 2,500 miles. We will leave Ozzie’s in Morrison on April 4th at 7:30 AM and stop on the north side of Colorado Springs at the Shell gas station immediately west of Interstate 25 at the Garden of the Gods exit at 8:30 am to meet those who are starting from Colorado Springs. Bring food for the trip and camping gear.

We can camp in the Big Bend National Park, but I suggest we stay in either a motel or KOA to and from the Park.

APRIL 25, 2015ATLAS MISSILE SILO, GREELEY

9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison

Visit a relic of the cold war era. The Atlas “E” series missiles were the second-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles deployed and active from 1961 to 1965. They had a unique “coffin style” construction. The missile coffin held a four-megaton bomb, 500 times more powerful than Hiroshima.

The site is east of Greeley and should take about an hour and a half to reach. There will be a guided tour of the missile site and after a short ride we’ll meet-up for lunch. Admission to the site is free.

MAY 16, 2015 COLORADO HIGHWAY 67SEDALIA TO WETMORE

8:00 AM Continental Breakfast at Foothills Motorcycles9:00 AM Ride Leaves From Foothills Motorcycles, Lakewood

We have had such great attendance for this ride and so many repeat requests, that we just couldn’t pass up doing it again. We will leave Foothills at 9:00 AM for the ride south. The 71 mile road built in 1920 runs from Sedalia on the north to Wetmore on Highway 96 at the south end. In that distance it passes through five distinct segments, including two stretches of rail grade. The Colorado Midland on the north and the Florence and Cripple Creek narrow gauge railroad on the south. Two of the three lines were built to service the mines in the Cripple Creek district, the latter having significant scenic and historic value. Riding these routes it is easy to visualize what passengers experienced in the 1800s while traveling to and from the district. We will also cross the highest auto bridge in the state and the unique three-section Adelaide railroad bridge.

Colorado 67 is not technical but about half of the route is unpaved county road designating this as a dual sport ride. Lunch will be in Canon City and afterwards, the plan will be to return via the Shelf Road built in 1892 for the stage line. Total miles round trip is right at 250.

MAY 22-25, 2015 LOS ALAMOS, NM

    MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison

As most of you know, finding an uncrowded place to hang out and ride on three-day weekends in Colorado has become difficult lately. Looking for an alternative, we discovered Los Alamos purely by accident last year.

Selected for the Manhattan Project in 1942, Los Alamos is built at 7,200’ elevation on the remote and scenic Pojarito Plateau. There are only two ways in and only 5,000 homes in the area. Although there are 11,000 people working at the National Labs, everyone leaves on the weekend leaving the town empty. There is an abundance of great roads nearby, both paved and dirt, with no one on them. Two National Monuments are close by as well as an abundance of other diversions. Get away from crowded Colorado for a weekend and try remote Los Alamos. We will be leaving Morrison at 9:00 AM on the 22nd returning on the evening of the 25th. Please RSVP to Carl so he doesn’t leave anyone behind. We will be based out of Motel 6 on Trinity Drive in Los Alamos, currently booking for $41 a night. Book your own room.

MAY 23, 2015INTRODUCTION TO PASS BAGGING

9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison

Sometimes the most difficult part of any quest is taking the first step. The Pass Bagger Quest has been part of the BMWMCC for many years and there have been a lot of members start and complete the 50, 100, 150, and even 200 pass milestones. This day-long ride is intended to provide a first step for those interested in pursuing the Pass Bagger Quest by reviewing what a pass is, resources available to assist in planning your pass bagging, record keeping, and just having a fun day of riding. We will bag 10-12 passes on this ride, about one quarter of the way to your 50-pass milestone.

MAY 30, 2015 PEAK TO PEAK ANNUAL RIDE

8:00 AM Continental Breakfast at Foothills Motorcycles 9:00 AM Foothills Motorcycles, Lakewood

Designated in 1918, the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is Colorado’s oldest Scenic Byway. We depart Foothills Motorcycles picking up the actual Peak to Peak Highway in Nederland after a short rest stop at the Happy Trails Coffee Shop located inside the old wood railroad car.

We follow this scenic route to CO 7, then make a left to Estes Park where we can all enjoy lunch at the Big Horn Restaurant. Riding options from this point are open to discussion as we could continue our adventure visiting Rocky Mountain National Park or take CO 7 past the Peak to Peak junction to Lyons. From Lyons we could head to Boulder, then head home from our awe-inspiring day of scenic riding.

  • www.BMWMCC.org 23BMWMCC 2015 Ride Book22

This is the second year for this exciting ride that proved to be an adventure last year on our scouting trip. Lessons learned include this really needs to be a 4-day ride so as to not have to ride 14 hours a day with minimal breaks and to allow for weather delays. This is a rare opportunity to set foot in 8 states, cross over a dozen mountain passes, ride 2,000 miles and have more fun than you thought possible—all in a long weekend.

80% - 90% of the ride will be paved roads with the remainder on dirt roads. Anyone with a

bike and the skills to ride forest service type roads should be fine. If you are on a street bike and/or don’t feel comfortable on dirt, there will be some alternate routes to meet back up with the group, but you will not be able to reach three of the four corners.

We will meet for breakfast at the TNT Restaurant in Morrison at 7:00 AM on Thursday, June 5th. We’ll leave no later than 8:00 AM. Our routes will be dictated by the road conditions, weather, the group, and of course, what looks like fun.

JUNE 4-7, 2015 FOUR CORNERS OF COLORADO RIDE

7:00 AM TNT Restaurant, Morrison for Breakfast8:00 AM Departure

We will head to the Northwest corner of the State first, which will be the hardest of the four corners. We will then target the Southwest corner, stopping somewhere along the way for the night. Cheap motels are the plan. We will hit “Four Corners” Friday morning, then head east, zigzagging our way across the bottom of the State and northern part of NM towards the Southeast corner. We will stay somewhere in the Southeast region Friday night, then mount back up Saturday morning and hit the Southeast corner. We will then travel north towards the last

corner in the Northeast, stopping somewhere along the way for the night. Sunday morning we will be hitting the Northeast corner, then we will work our way home Sunday afternoon, exploring some fun 2-lane roads—or you can get home faster via I-76 (but why would you?).

Join us for the “adventure” of the year! Please RSVP to John and feel free to contact John with any questions.

Adding a new slant this year on the Beemers and Bears campout of prior years, this camping weekend will be held at Wilderness on Wheels (WOW). WOW is a charitable organization which provides wheelchair-bound individuals access to a magnificent outdoor experience in the beautiful high mountains of Colorado. The facility, located just this side of Kenosha Pass, offers a gently sloping mile long boardwalk which wanders through the trees as it climbs to a cabin at 10,000 foot altitude.

Visitors are able to visit for the day or camp out, as they wish. Sharing some of the Pike National Forest land, WOW offers tent-camping, covered areas, fully enclosed sleeping areas, and even two fully furnished rental cabins. There are plenty of covered areas with tables and benches and a place for groups to gather around an evening camp fire. Just 50 miles from Morrison, this place is perfectly located for both campers and or day trippers.

JUNE 12-14, 2015 WILDERNESS ON WHEELS

As you would expect, maintaining such a facility entails a good bit of volunteer labor. This is where the Club comes in. We have offered 20 of our members as a maintenance crew during the day Saturday. WOW staff will be there to point us in the right directions and provide what tools and supplies we need. All Club members are welcome to come for day-visits or camping but the work crew will be limited to 20, just to keep it manageable. We are asking you to RSVP before May 10th, so that we can tell WOW how many to expect. The 2 fully furnished cabins are available for rent on a first-come first-serve basis for a very

reasonable price. Campers are not charged but donations are very welcome.

The Rhubarb Romp and New Member Ride are scheduled for that same Saturday. It will be returning to town in the afternoon and will be riding right by the WOW entrance. That group is planning to stop in and is invited to visit or join us for camping that evening.

To RSVP or for further information, please contact Jeff.

This ride will be approximately 200 miles in length and will be entirely paved but with a dirt option for those interested and a camping option for Saturday night. A great place and time to meet and get to know more of the members.

The ride begins with a short 30-mile run to the town of Pine for their 28th annual fund-raising rhubarb pancake breakfast. Plan on having breakfast there. The festival is right in the center of town where the Pine Grove Fire Department hosts an excellent full hot breakfast with all the fixings. It includes pancakes

topped with rhubarb, rhubarb pies, and other goodies. It is well worth the very reasonable price of admission.

After spending approximately an hour at the festival, the ride will resume by heading south from Pine to Woodland Park, then west on Highway 24. The dirt option will turn off north on Tarryall Road (CO 77), taking it north for ~41 miles, rejoining Highway 285 and the group at Jefferson. (Road riders have done this route without difficulty). The paved-only riders will continue on Highway 24 and take a short break at the top of Wilkerson

Pass. From there, we continue on to turn north on Highway 9 until we rejoin Highway 285 at Fairplay. From there, it is Highway 285 north to Jefferson where we will join back up with the dirt riders for a lunch break.

After lunch, the group heads back towards Denver, past Kenosha Pass for about a mile, looking for the driveway of Wilderness on Wheels (WOW) on your right. The Club will be sponsoring a volunteer work-party campout weekend there that day. You

will be too late to join the work team, but you can stop in for a visit, hike the boardwalk trail up the mountain with the option of camping there for the evening. If you are considering camping, be sure to RSVP to Jeff Burns before May 10th (see the WOW write-up on page 24-25) and bring your camping gear! WOW is a charitable organization and it’s a beautiful place to visit and hike around! Hope to see you all.

9:00 AM Leave John Coker’s House - BoulderFor Directions & Breakfast RSVP to John Coker

8:15 AM Meet for Real Coffee - 8:30 AM Breakfast Served 9:00 AM Kickstands Up

Last year’s GS ride was well attended and a lot of fun. Our route took us through Red Feather Lakes, Cherokee Parkway, and some would say questionable (closed) logging roads before dumping us out onto the highway for the final run to Riverside.

The routes are mainly on forest service type roads, so basic dirt riding skills would be fine. Weather and road conditions will dictate this year’s routes, subject to change at a moment’s notice and/or getting lost (part of the adventure). Route suggestions are always welcome. Contact John Coker with any questions about this ride and confirm your participation.

Join us for great riding and the best 4th celebration in the state!

Friday, July 3rd––We gather in Morrison, planning to leave at 9:00 AM sharp. We take Hwy 285 South to Johnson Village where we regroup for a short break at the Coyote Cantina. From there it’s Monarch Pass to Montrose, south again through Ridgeway and on to Ouray. This 285-mile ride is all scenic and puts us into Ouray early enough to get rested up for the next day’s activities. You need reservations for this sold-out event. Walking distance from the town center is best.

Saturday, July 4th––Ouray is bustling with action. It starts with a giant fund-raiser breakfast for the mountain rescue teams. Next comes a big main street parade followed in the afternoon by their famous everybody-gets-soaked water fight right in the center of town. Fire-hose teams battle each other until the other team gets knocked down. This is a don’t-miss event and it’s worth the whole trip! Everyone for miles around is there. At sunset, there is a parade of pickup-mounted flares coming off Red Mountain Pass into town. The people are all out and when the last pickup

JULY 2-5, 2015 OURAY 4TH OF JULY RIDE & WEEKEND

9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison

exits town, the fireworks display begins. Everyone has a perfect view. They go off right over our heads and the sound bounces off all the cliffs that surround the town.

Sunday, July 5th––Riding day. The best roads in the state are right here. It’s GS paradise with high-mountain passes galore. Take your pick––the Million Dollar Highway, Red Mountain Pass, Silverton, Telluride, Rico, Dolores, and Mesa Verde. Or, take the turn onto Highway 141, my personal pick for best ride in the whole state. End your riding day at one of the many hot springs, some of which are at the motels.

Monday, July 6th––Missing most of the holiday traffic, we will retrace our route back to Morrison except for bypassing Monarch Pass with CO 114 over North Cochetopa Pass. This return leg is 335 miles.

IMPORTANT NOTE – Ouray books up early for the 4th. You REALLY do need reservations. Call or email me. I will try to keep track of where everyone is staying. Last year the group camped at the “4J+1+1” RV campground, just 2 blocks from town. Keren and Michael Kilgore have reserved a cabin and the two adjacent tent-camping areas, but they will only accommodate about 12 people. Google will show you numerous rooms and camping opportunities in town.

JULY 16-19, 2015 TOP ‘O THE ROCKIESPAONIA, COLORADO

The Top O’ The Rockies Rally is the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado’s premiere annual event. The Rally is based in the small town of Paonia, Colorado just a mile off of Highway 133 along the West Elk National Scenic Byway on Colorado’s western slope. The town park serves as Rally headquarters and base camp. Paonia is located 70 miles south of Glenwood Springs on CO Highway 133 or 27 miles from Delta via Highways 82 and 133.

Paonia’s setting beneath 11,400 foot Mount Lamborn is nothing short of spectacular and is a great base from which to explore the tremendous variety of motorcycle roads tucked into the relatively small area of spectacular Southwestern Colorado. Riders can enjoy

unparalleled scenery, explore the area’s history and experience great small town restaurant fare. Colorado Highways 133, 65, and 92 are rated as the most technical highways to ride in Colorado. There are also hundreds of miles of adventure riding, three National Parks and eight National Scenic Byways close by.

The park features mature shade trees and lush lawns for camping, support facilities, and a bandstand for evening entertainment. There are rest-rooms, showers, and portable facilities in the park and at the local high school. Quiet camping

as well as limited (no hook-up) RV camping facilities are also available. For those preferring a soft bed, there are hotels and B&B’s nearby.

Included in your rally registration fee is camping, live entertainment, complimentary dinner Saturday night, food vendors, beer garden, and the

best riding in the nation! To pre-register online or to download a mail-in registration form, visit www.bmwmcc.org/registrations.php.

The event offers paved and dirt versions to accommodate the increasing number of dual sport riders. The total mileage for either route will be less than 500 miles. AUGUST 8, 2015 TOUR OF HONOR RIDE

    TO VETERANS MEMORIALS

8:00 AM, Morrison, Red Rocks Grill

This BMWMCC ride will visit five veteran memorials along a route of about 200 miles to Castle Rock, Colorado Springs (3 sites), Woodland Park and the Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Memorial in Littleton. There will be short history lessons at each site. We will ride as a

group with maps and directions provided, stop for lunch at Rudy’s BBQ in Colorado Springs, and finish with the “Lone Survivor” movie at Jeff Burns’ place.

Maybe some of the veteran memorials on this ride are those you’ve always wanted to see, but haven’t taken the time to stop, read the plaques, and honor those who have served our country so gallantly. This ride is influenced by the national Tour of Honor (www.tourofhonor.com) which provides a great reason to hit the open road, honor our heroes, and contribute to a good cause. The season-long AMA-sanctioned event is a self-directed ride to memorials and monuments around the U.S., and you can visit as many sites as you want with any route you choose.

Being registered for the ToH is not required to participate in this BMWMCC ride, but if you are signed up, bring your ToH flag along for photos because if any of the 2015 ToH sites are near our route, we might detour to them.

AUGUST 8-10, 2015DIRTY DOZEN DUAL SPORT PASS BAGGER

8:00 AM TNT Country Kitchen, Morrison

The Dirty Dozen ride is back for you dual sporters. This is a three-day ride with two nights of camping. We are working on the route, but count on several passes each day, both paved and dirt. Depending on the route, we will probably cover about 300 miles each day. Expect good and not-so-good dirt roads. This is not an “expert ride” but neither should it be your first dirt ride.

We will leave Morrison at 8:00 AM on Saturday. Eat at the TNT with us earlier if you like. We’ll head out and ride over some passes, then camp Saturday night. Sunday, we’ll do the same. Monday should be a nice day to cross more passes, then ride back to town with no weekend traffic to fight! As usual you are welcome to join us, even if you can’t stay out for all three days.

For more information or to register, contact Shu. We will probably camp in a KOA type campground (running water! hot showers! etc.), so I’ll need to know in advance how many people to make reservations for.

    OCTOBER 31, 2015GRAVEYARD RUN

9:30 AM Red Rocks Grille, MorrisonWeather Permitting

Colorado has a rich history, especially in industries and endeavors far from the cities. Join us as we take a leisurely ride to a series of cemeteries in remote communities along the Front Range.

Time will be spent at every location dependent on the group’s overall interest. The route will be dependent on any early snow. The final roads to the cemeteries are unpaved, so bring your GS. Bring a packed lunch, a thermos, and your camera––although we will try and find time for pie!

Before you come, find and print out a listing of grave stone symbols such as http://www.graveaddiction.com/symbol.html especially for the Oddfellows Cemetery above Central City as it will give you an explanation of the owls, anchors, vine leaves, laurels, lambs, etc as this will make your experience so much better! For further exploring, a GPS/GPX file is available for your GPS of maps to 760 or so Colorado cemeteries––email Greg Cocks for the map.

BMW MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF COLORADOPERPETUAL PASS BAGGER QUEST

    50 | 100 | 150 | 200

The Pass Bagger Quest is sponsored by BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado and serves as a perpetual self-paced cumulative ride contest. It is perpetual in that the requirements can be completed over several years. The Pass Bagger Quest requires official registration and payment of $15 per person ($30 for 2-up), for each level of fifty passes for which the registrant will receive an instructional packet and pass accumulation booklet. The registrant must then ride to the top of at least 50/100/150/200 individual Colorado mountain passes of their own choosing at their own pace and schedule, then document the accomplishment with a photograph of themselves, their bike and the sign or equivalent located at the top of each pass. Upon completion, the ride must be entered in the completed Pass Bagger booklet indicating the names of at least 50 passes and the dates completed, with photographs. The booklet is then given to the Pass Bagger Coordinator who will authenticate the pass completions and certify eligibility for the award. Riders may choose any passes within Colorado as long as the pass appears on a published map or book. Because the contest is perpetual and not year specific, contestants may take as long as they want or need to complete. For more information visit the Pass Bagger page at www.bmwmcc.org/passbagger.php.

We support the Glen Haven General Store that survived the Big Thompson flood while neighboring stores did not. Head up for their famous cinnamon rolls some-time; you won’t

regret the ride, the rolls, or visiting with these great owners!
