P r e s i d e n t ’ s L e t t e rI hope everyone realizes how diverse the Club’s riding choices are this year. There should be something for everyone’s tastes. Let me point out the month of June. We offered what I will call an “adventure ride” which attracted about fifteen hardy souls who attempted to set foot on all four actual corners of our state, touching eight states in total, all in three days. This required managing both pavement and off-road sections. We had a new member ride which could be done entirely on pavement but offered some gravel road as an option, reuniting the group in Jefferson, Colorado for our lunch stop. We had a destination ride to watch the white-water competition in Salida, Colorado. We had a sold out Club sponsored Iron Butt sanctioned “SaddleSore 1000” endurance road ride. We combined a 400 mile day ride with a soak in the Glenwood hot springs. Last but not least, about forty riders headed to Riverside, Wyoming, some by pavement and some by off-road, meeting up to camp by the historic Encampment River.

July will be just as diverse. It opens with a ride to Ouray, Colorado to take in their spectacular 4th of July celebration and enjoy some of the best riding opportunities in the entire state. That is followed by a GS style dual-sport ride lead by two of our renowned world adventure riders, Paul “Shu” Shushan and Karst Postma. On the 17th of July, our 43rd annual Top O’ The Rockies Club rally opens for a three day run. A week later, members will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota for the BMW MOA rally. For those not attending the MOA event, Randy Bishop will be leading a tour of Veteran Memorials all around the state.

August will be just as busy. What you see here is a serious effort by some of our most active members to make your Club membership interesting and rewarding. Honestly, I think they have done a terrific job putting all this together. Our total membership is on track to exceed the previous year. What is disappointing to me however is that for all this work, membership participation could be much better. As I write this, we are likely to see 500 riders in attendance at Paonia. We have already pre-registered riders from more than half the states. They come from New York, Florida and Canada, but fewer than 10% of our own membership has yet to register for this premier event. Why is that? I have the same question about attendance at our scheduled rides. Riverside drew a nice sized crowd, numbering around forty riders, but other rides have not fared as well. I realize that it is the nature of most organizations to have an active core group which is less than half the total membership. That’s fine but this is supposed to be a Club people join to share fun times. You can’t do that if you don’t show up. How about making it a point to support the events. The people who do the work and lead the rides will appreciate it.

Ride Safe, Jeff

Ride R eport & PhotosThe inaugural 4 Corners of CO Ride was a lot of fun and well attended with 12 people. We had 10 GS bikes and 2 street bikes. We explored some new roads and areas of the state that most of the riders haven’t been to. We left Morrison on Friday morning June 6th and headed for the Northwest corner of the state. We had to enter UT and WY on our way to the Northwest corner as it is not accessible form CO directly. The last 10 miles were not rideable on a street bike, so we left one of the street bikes at the cutoff and road 2 up. After about a mile of mud holes, we made the corner. Beautiful scenery and very remote for a quick lunch break. We finished the day in Montrose, CO, after passing through Flaming Gorge and over Douglas Pass. The second day started off with a great early morning ride over Dallas Divide, through Telluride and over Lizard Head Pass on the way to the Southwest corner. They have built a lot of new structures and actually moved the corner marker as it was found to be in the wrong location. We decided to stay in NM and ride HWY 64. After clearing Farmington, NM we hit some great mountain roads that many haven’t ridden before. When we got to Taos for gas, we made the call to stop for the day as the weather was very bad in the direction we were heading, including snow in Angel

Fire. After a group meeting, it was determined that because of the remaining distance to cover Sunday and the bad weather forecast on the eastern plains, that we were not going to be able to get to all 4 corners in 3 days. Some chose to take a direct route home from Taos Sunday, while 4 riders chose to head to the Southeast corner. The weather was threatening all the way to the corner, but we made it and started to head for home. The weather forecasters were not wrong about the weather Sunday afternoon. We rode back in extreme winds, rains, and tornadoes. Everyone had a good time on the ride and would like to do it again, taking 4 days next time to allow for weather, a little sightseeing, and a little more time for meals and sleep. Who is up for the second annual ride in 2015?

The photo to the left was taken with the help from our Mazda 3’s headlights. Almost everyone was all smiles after a day of riding curvy and scenic Colorado roads with no rain. This is Harley rider Steve Gualke of Colorado Springs, one of the earliest arrivals. There weren’t many Harley rider participants.

Daniel Bilodeau - Cheyenne, WYTrue Ironbutt rider on BMW S1000RR. Daniel and his friend Josh Taylor rode their sport bikes from Cheyenne and perservered to finish at 1:20 AM. Daniel told us all the things he did wrong, like not bringing his electric vest or clear face shield. It was good to see young participates in an IBA SaddleSore 1000.

Riders enjoying Sunday brunch.

Daniel Bilodeau’s BMW S1000RR and Josh Taylor, Cheyenne, WY, Honda CBR600RR finished at 1:20 AM. Pictured to the right, in front of Grand Lake Lodge, Daniel’s and Josh’s bikes are still right where they parked them after arriving from their ride.

Thanks to Eric Levy for a great job organizing the 2014 Colorado Classic 1000 event, choosing an amazing route that was challenging but not too difficult, and for setting up the finish line at the beautiful Grand Lake Lodge. And to all the volunteers, Randy Bishop, Gray Buckley, Jim Yarrington, Celia Germond and others who made the event successful. We very much enjoyed it.

The 1000 mile ride left Lakewood at 5:00 am, went through Fairplay, Hartsel, Salida, Saguache, Monte Vista, South Fork, Lake City, Hotchkiss on Rim Road, over Grand Mesa, Grand Junction, Loma, Meeker, Craig, Steamboat, Granby, to Grand Lake. There were some great roads and only 33 miles was freeway, the rest was twisty back roads along rivers, streams and lakes most of the day. A black bear and 2 cubs, a moose, and lots of deer were spotted. Out of 60 entrants, 39 started and 34 finished. Out of the BMWMCC, Mike Szabo was the first finisher, arriving at 10:08 pm, John Coker at 11:37 pm, Chris Wilder at 11:25 pm, and Michael &

Keren Kilgore along with Jeff de Wispelaere, and Dimitri Tourmas arriving at 2:25 pm. Frank Ricci’s bike broke down outside Grand Junction so he couldn’t finish. Because of odometer differences several people were just under the 1000 miles and had to go back out and ride another 5 or 10 miles to complete the 1000 requirement. Bummer. After hours of riding we arrived at dark, crashed at our respective cabins and woke up the next morning to see how beautiful the lodge was overlooking Grand Lake. The buffet breakfast was complete with omelets, salmon and capers, French toast, and lots of fruit for hungry riders. Eric had some great give away prizes and recognized several people who completed the Iron Butt ride for the first time. Overall, it was great fun and several people commented that it wasn’t as hard as they thought it was going to be! So, next year we look forward to doing it again!

Keren Kilgore

Thanks to Organizer

This was not a race and there was no finish order. The first entrant to arrive at the finish came in at 9:15 PM and the last person to finish came in at 3:55 AM.

Scott Clinger of Bridgeport, NE, claimed the first and second winning raffle tickets, winning $207. Doran Newlin of Littleton, CO, a 4-time Finisher, won $69, and Chris Wilder of Lakewood, CO, a first time Finisher and BMWMCC club member, won a Wolfman Expedition dry duffle.
