Newsletter April/May 2015 Bluffsview School http://www.worthington.k12.oh.us/Domain/15 614-450-5100 Our mission at Bluffsview School is to provide a purposeful and supportive environment which promotes collaboration, creativity, intellectual and interpersonal behaviors, and academic growth for our next generation learners. Dear Bluffsview Families, It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of our 2014-2015 school year. Spring is such a wonderful time, but it is also a time when we all tend to slip a bit with our regular routines. Outside activities and longer evenings make it difficult to get to bed early. We appreciate your continuing efforts in ensuring that our students remain focused and committed to their daily school work. We still have much to accomplish in this school year! April and May are busy “behind the scenes” months at Bluffsview. As a staff, we will begin preparing for the next school year. An important part of this preparation is found in the process of student placement and classroom groupings. Class lists will be developed by balancing the academic, social, emotional and behavioral strengths and weaknesses of all students at each grade level. The grouping of each class will be thoughtfully considered. Our goal is to build classes that will promote the maximum growth in each child both academically and socially. I will be working with current classroom teachers, related arts teachers and support staff to develop class lists. If there is information about your child that you feel is important for us to know and will help us with this process, please share this with your child’s teacher. Should additional information need sharing, there is a form in the office that can be completed and returned to me. This form should be turned into the office no later than May 1, 2015. This year, as every year, the warm weather will bring out new fashions for our children, some that are appropriate for the learning environment at Bluffsview and some that are not so appropriate. Please, help us through your careful guidance as we continue to maintain a strong focus on learning through the remainder of the school year. If your child questions the appropriateness of an article of clothing, please refer them to the dress code located in the Parent-Student Handbook. As I often shared with my own children when they were growing up, if you have to question it, it probably isn’t a good choice! We appreciate the active role you take daily in supporting your children and Bluffsview Elementary. Sincerely, Cindy P. The Kelley Memorial Library

Mrs. Megan Mott, Library Media Specialist

Our students have been creating, researching, exploring, and reading! I am so proud of all

they have accomplished so far this year. Ask your child to share their most recent project

with you at home!

Our Worthington Public Libraries have so much to offer! Along with having a wonderful

collection of the newest materials in the library, they also have a great e-book and digital

media collection. Check out the digital download section on their website. Students can

use their library card to check out the materials they are wanting and then instantly

download them onto their device without any cost!

It’s hard to believe that it is already time to start to think about a summer reading program.

Our Worthington Public Libraries are having a hero themed summer reading program this

year. The program runs from May 31st until August 1st with a kick-off party at the Worthington

Park Library on Friday, May 30th. More information about the summer reading program will

be coming soon.

Here are some other resources that you and your child will have access to

during the summer:

TumbleBooks -(Tumblebooks.com) Enjoy animated books with your child this summer!

Username: bluffsview Password: books

INFOhio – Check out infohio.org for World Book Kids, World Book Student, Book Flix, Early

World of Learning, and more! Username: worthington Password: library

Code.org – Students in grades 2-6 have set up an account with their personal school log-in

information.

Learning.com – All students can practice their keyboarding skills or learn about a topic of

their choice through learning.com. Students will use their personal school log-in information

to access this site.

As always please let me know if you have any questions! ~Mrs. Mott ([email protected])

Worthington Schools Early Admission to Kindergarten

The Worthington City School District is responsible for identifying pre-school children, residing within the district, who may have an advanced learning ability. Children who do not meet the age requirement of 5 years old by September 30, 2015 but have an advanced learning ability may qualify for early admission to kindergarten which is considered an accelerated placement. If you have a child that you suspect may qualify, please contact your building principal for more information. You may also call Worthington's Gifted Services Department at 450-6056. Acceleration Referral forms are located on the Gifted Services webpage located on the District website at www.worthington.k12.oh.us.

The Bluffsview Beat:

What’s Happening in the

Music Room? ♫ Remaining Concert Dates for 2015:

o Music Makers, May 11th at 1:30pm and 7:00pm

♫ Congratulations to the Fifth Grade on a wonderful performance of “The Sound that Jazz

Makes.” You worked very hard to prepare for this concert and I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as the audience enjoyed listening to and watching you! Thank you to Mrs. Schumer for helping you to create the beautiful musical instrument art projects to tie into our program.

♫ Capriccio Youth Choir will be conducting placement auditions for the 2015-16 concert season on Wednesdays, May 6th and May 13th, by appointment at Smoky Row Brethren Church. All singers entering grades 4-12 in the fall of 2015 are invited to join. To schedule a fun, low-pressure placement audition, contact Director Alyson Bates at [email protected]. Several current Bluffsview students as well as alumni participate in this vocal group. It is a wonderful opportunity if your child is looking for another outlet for singing! More information is available on their website: http://capricciocolumbus.org/youth-choir

♫ Summer is not a time to stop making music! There are many opportunities to continue

loving music all summer long. Why not attend a free concert on the Worthington Green? Or attend a music camp? Why not dig your recorder out of your backpack (or rescue it from under your bed!), take it outside, and make up your own song inspired by your surroundings? If the weather is bad and you’re stuck inside, check out some of the cool websites linked on www.bluffsviewmusic.blogspot.com or find a neat new music making app on your tablet or smart phone. The possibilities are endless! Make some musical memories this summer and share them with me in August!

CONRATULATIONS TO THE BLUFFSVIEW ARCHERY TEAM

Congrats and best wishes to our archery teams who qualified for the National

Championships in Louisville, KY. The tournament sets the new Guiness Book of World

Records each year for the largest archery tournament in the world with over 10,000

archers coming from all over the United States. The Middle School team placed 2nd at

states! Individually, Sam Marano placed 3rd in the middle school division with a 286 out of 300 and Misha

Sohail placed 4th for female 5th grade. A full list of results can be viewed at www.NaspTournaments.org

HOMEWORK HELP AVAILABLE AT WORTHINGTON LIBRARIES….Homework help

centers are now at each Worthington Library location! The Library unveiled brand new centers at Old Worthington Library and the Northwest Library on Hard Road last January. They offer trained staff and volunteers as well as computers, printers and other resources for students. Hours at the Northwest Library’s center are 4:00 - 7:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

CLASSROOM PLACEMENT FOR 2015-2016

During the last weeks of this school year, we know that you begin to think about next year and your child’s

class placement in the next grade level. We would like to share with you how the staff will proceed in making

that placement.

We will place your child appropriately in a class for next year by involving current classroom teachers, the related arts teachers and support staff in developing all of the class lists.

The class lists will be carefully created by balancing the academic, social, emotional and behavioral strengths and

weaknesses of all students at each grade level. The grouping of each class will be thoughtfully

considered.

Children in our school have an opportunity to interact with their friends during recess times and in extra-curricular activities. Often teachers feel that certain students should be separated for classroom placement so an optimal learning/behavior climate is created. Being with specific friends in a classroom is not a request that can be considered.

If there is specific information about your child that you want to be sure we consider in placing him/her for

next year, please pick up a form in the office and return it no later than May 1, 2015. Class lists will be

posted in August.
