SATURDAY MORNINGS

From The President’s Garage

Although we don’t want to hear it, when this Newsletter comes out, it will be a little over7 weeks ‘till Xmas. With that being said, I have arranged to have our annual Xmas Luncheon atthe same place as last year. As noted elsewhere in the Spanner, it will be at the Holiday Inn onVenetian Boulevard in Point Edward on December 7th at 12.00 noon.

However looking back on the summer that flew by, most of us had an enjoyable time with our cars.Laura and I certainly did and are already considering a trip for next summer to the North Eastern US states.Although not the warmest of summers, it made for good driving.

Our thanks to Roy and Margaret Overton for organizing the fall tour to the Cider Mill in Thedford .The weather cooperated and the cider and the donuts went down easily. The hayride was a bonus for thosethat went on it . Now we know the right way to pick an apple !!!!!

We are still using our cars, and what better time to go cruising in the country, with all the greatcolour around.

There are not a lot of restoration projects happening in the club, however John Holmes has pro-gressed with his ‘70 Jaguar E Type OTS. It is now a driving car in unpainted form. Have personally seen itdrive up and down the driveway. Be on the road next summer John ????? Roy Overton’s move from hisMGB to a modern Mini Cooper is something that is happening within many Clubs, as a little more comfortbut still British, is desired. There is a chance we will see more of this, in the future.

As the driving season winds down , I would like to hear from members with their cars mileage for theHarry Buist Award, no later than the middle of November please.

And finally it is good news that Byron’s misadventure has passed and that he is doing well . We allappreciate his work with the Newsletter.Happy Motoring, Kim R.

The Spanner November, 2014 7

1912 - The Morris Oxford had a 1018 cc four-cylinder T-head engine made by White & Poppe of Cov-entry to Morris specifications. The gear box was also by White & Poppe, while the axles and steering came fromE.G.H. Wrigley of Birmingham. The two-seater bodies were made by Raworth of Oxford, wheels were fromSankey and lighting from Powell & Hanmer. The rounded radiator originally nick-named the “Bulletnose” be-cause of it’s resemblance to a 303 rifle bullet, and later modified to “Bullnose” was made by Docherty of Coven-try. It amazes me that no single component was not bought in, but that this was Morris’s way of doing thingssimilar to Henry Ford in the early days.

1914 - Over 200 makes of cars are available on the British market.1917 - Herbert Austin awarded Knighthood.1919 - S.F. Edge returns to the car industry by taking over AC

cars (1908-1985)1920 - Sunbeam, Talbot, and Darracq combine to form the STD

Motors Ltd. In Britain, the Motor Car Act taxes cars at £1 per RAChorsepower.

1922 - Introduction of the Austin Seven.- Clyno (1922-1930) abandons motorcycles and begins

car production.- Leyland Motors takes over manufacture of the Trojan

(1922-1937)1923 - Cecil Kimber of Morris Garages builds the first MG

based on his Morris Cowley sportsconversions.

- Famous Coventry Cyle and Motorcycle manufacturers, Tri-umph build their first car, the 10/20 HP.

1924 - Napier ends car production to concentrate on Aero en-gines.

- Leon Bollee of LeMans is taken over by Morris1925 - General Motors takes over Vauxhall Motors of Luton

(1903 to date)- Morris produces 54,151 Bullnose Oxfords and Cowleys.- Ford’s Manchester factory builds it’s 250,000th model T, which makes a triumphal tour of

Britain.- First popular British car with hydraulic four=wheel brakes is the Triumph 13/30- Rolls-Royce replaces the Silver Ghost, in production since 1906, with the Phantom.

1926 - Clyno becomes Britain’s biggest manufac-turer, turning out 300 cars a week from a cramped factory inWolverhampton.

1927 - Wolseley fails, and is bought by Morris for£730,000. The firm was renamed Wolseley Motors (1927) Ltd.

1928 - Rootes buys Humber (1901-1976) and Hill-man (1907-1978)

- Alvis (1920-1967) produces Britain’s firstcatalogued front-wheel-drive car.
