What is BLUETOOTH? It is wireless protocol utilizing short range
communication technology.
Facilitates data transmission from fixed and/or mobile devices creating personal area
network(PAN).
Low cost device with small power consumption
and reasonable throughput.
Suitable for small battery driven devices.

Concept Of PICONET &
SCATTERNETPICONET :
o It is a collection of upto 8
devices that frequencyhop together.
o Out of which one is themaster device and other
are slaves.o Slave devices use the
masters clock tosynchronize their clocks.

SCATTERNET
Consists of several
piconets connected by
devices participating inmultiple piconets.
These devices can be
slave in all piconets or
master in one and slave
in other piconets.

FREQUENCY HOPPING SPREAD
SPECTRUM Scheme In Bluetooth
FHSS is a method of transmitting radio signals byrapidly switching a carrier among many frequencychannels.
It uses a pseudorandom process known to bothtransmitter and receiver.
Master¶s bluetooth address is used for definitionof frequency hopping sequence in a piconet.
Bluetooth uses unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM banddivided into 79 channels of 1MHz each.

FREQUENCY HOPPING SPREAD
SPECTRUM(Contd.)Blutooth hops 1600 times
per second.
It uses a form of TDMAcalled TDD-TDMA.
Basic radio transmission packet time slot is 625s
(i.e.1/1600s).Each radio packet consists
of local area piconet ID,device ID and logicalchannel identifier

BLUETOOTH ISSUES
Scalability Issues: Only 8 nodes can be connected ata time so dense n/w not possible.Slave to Slave directcommunication not possible.
Increased Delay In Connection: inquiry procedureto discover different bluetooth unit is lengthy.
Privacy Concerns: No information about source of n/w is provided by inquiry unit.
Establishing a scatternet is very difficult due tofrequency interference problem.
Low Throughput: It is 1mbps but withoverheads it is 722 kbps only.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONSWith bluetooth 2.0 throughput of 10mbps
possible.
Multiple piconets can coordinate to avoidfrequency interference
Master of one piconet can get the sequence of frequencies used by other piconets and can choose
a set of non-overlapping frequency for itself.Making the inquiry unit to send the source
information can solve privacy issues.

CONCLUSIONBluetooth is a possible choice for data
communication in sensor networks.
Low power, low cost, hardware availability are someof bluetooth advantages.
While slow connection, smaller range are some of itsdisadvantages.
As the saying ³SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL´ isgetting popular bluetooth is certainly going to emergeas best short range wireless technology.
