One of the latest being the show its players put on on their home court March 9, 2009, when they upset No. 2-seeded Westminster 52-45 in the OFSAA "AA" Boys Basketball championship game. This weekend wasn't about focusing on past accomplishments, however, though for coach Darrel Sokoloski and the team's future coach Peter Graham. It was about preparing for the future. "For the the first time ever, we hosted a free basketball combine," Sokoloski said, "A combine is usually a hockey or football kind of thing, but we came up with the idea for this about a month ago. "We put together 16 drills that we thought could test a wide range of the youths' skills. The main focuses of the combine was to target its participants strength, agility and power. The drills included the sitting ball test, bench press, beep test, vertical jump, shuttle run, separators, lane slides, pull dribble, dribbling shuttle, foul shots, jump shots, timed left- and right-handed layups and passing. "We had a dry run a couple of weeks ago with some of our current kids," Sokoloski said. "It went well, so we decided to test it out for real today." Fifteen youth took part in the basketball combine. They worked on basic skills like passing and conditioning and on court strategies that Sokoloski uses in real games with the Blues. "The whole idea here wasn't to separate the kids into age groups," he said. "Everyone was competing against everyone. "It was fair because it gave some of the more inexperienced kids a benchmark of where their game should be if they want to play high school ball. "They know what to strive for now. Show the kids what it takes to get to the next level." Sokoloski is excited with what he saw from the potential TH&VS basketball players. "I was very impressed with the talent of the Grade 8s planning to come here in September," he said. "Probably the strongest group we've had in a long time. "The skill level and athleticism and the strength were all better than I expected. "I was also really surprised with some of the strength drills we did. The kids were doing phenomenal." The players who took part were equally as excited about the opportunity to learn new skills. "We definitely covered everything today," said Scott McDowell, who turns 14 today. "I found out some areas of my game that I should improve before I try out for the high school team." The Grade 8 student is planning to attend TH&VS in September. McDowell was thrilled with experiencing basketball at the high school level. And he plans on using as much of what he learned as possible to improve his game. Timmins High & Vocational School's boys basketball program has achieved numerous accomplishments in the past decade.
One of the latest being the show its players put on on their home court March 9, 2009, when they upset No. 2-seeded Westminster 52-45 in the OFSAA "AA" Boys Basketball championship game.
This weekend wasn't about focusing on past accomplishments, however, though for coach Darrel Sokoloski and the team's future coach Peter Graham. It was about preparing for the future.

He is also counting the down days to when he'll hopefully get an opportunity to put on a TH&VS jersey.
"I witnessed the calibre of game that is played at the high school level," McDowell said.
"The coaches have a lot of knowledge and they shared so much of it.
"I can't wait to play ball here.
"I've looked up to the program ever since I attended one of the school's basketball camps when I was seven.
"I can't wait to put on the Blues' jersey and come through that door at my first game, with the crowd cheering."
Each participant at the combine will receive feedback from both coaches, with recommendations, at a parents' information meeting Monday, at 7 p.m.

TH&VS will be holding its annual basketball camp from July 4-8.
The camp features a semi-pro division for boys and girls in Grades 4-6 and a pro division for boys and girls in Grades 7-9.
Both divisions will run from 10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The registration deadline is June 24.
Completed registration forms, which can be picked up at TH&VS, should be returned to Sokoloski at the school.
