Table Top Night 2009

Members got together at the beginning of the year for the annual Table Top Night event held at the Moore Building at the SC State Fairgrounds. The evening brought some chilly January temperatures, but members stayed cozy inside with over 60 exhibits from fellow members. Special thanks to our Table Top Night Sponsor, Columbia Metropolitan Magazine.

The theme of the evening was “Superheroes to the Rescue” and we saw some pretty good costumes and décor along those lines. As usual, the company or companies that best demonstrate the theme in their display gets to have their name printed here in our newsletter, but they also receive a free Table Top Night booth at next year’s event. Congratulations to our winners of the contest this year:

February HBA Meeting

The HBA held a General Membership Meeting on Thursday, February 5 at Seawell’s. We started the evening with a Builder Workshop on property taxes on unoccupied homes presented by S.C. Representative Ted Pitts. Builders learned about new proposed legislation that would limit the taxes paid on unoccupied standing inventory.

After the workshop the regular meeting began. We started off by welcoming new members at the meeting. We then awarded four members for reaching new levels in the SPIKE Club. Congratulations to these members and thanks for helping to grow the membership!

Our Speaker for the evening was Pat Mason, Co-Founder of Carolina Living. Pat presented lots and lots of information concerning the demographics and reasoning behind who is moving to and from South Carolina and when. If you weren’t there to see the presentation or if you’d like to see it again, please visit www.carolinaliving.com/ColumbiaHBA/2009.htm.

We wrapped up the evening with a jackpot drawing. Congratulations to John Bakhaus of Fairways Development/Long Creek... the big winner of the night. Our next meeting will be April 16 at Seawell’s where we’ll play HBA Deal or No Deal with our Membership Drive participants. It should be a fun evening.

Pete Williams has no excuse for being late now that he has a new SPIKE Club clock on his desk... unless he’s not working at his desk that day.

Mark Kinsey of The Kinsey Company reaches a new level in the Club.

Nancy Nelson of Russell & Jeffcoat Realtors, Inc. also joins the SPIKE Club!

Tammy Jur of Vesta Homes, Inc. joins the SPIKE Club!

HBA President Barry Davis (right) welcomes new members Lisa Eckard of Russell & Jeffcoat Realtors, Inc., Dick James of Custom Architectural Drafting & Design, Fred Meetze of Fairfield Contract Services, and Jennifer St. John of Palmetto Tile Distributors.

Ten Homes Certified in Build Green Greater Columbia Program

The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia is pleased to announce the green certification of ten homes in the Build Green Greater Columbia (BGGC) program. Through this local program, the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia is pleased to provide objective, third-party assessment, verification and certification services to help builders build environmentally-responsible homes, and to help consumers find green-built houses in our market.

The first ten certified homes are located throughout the greater Columbia area and were built by nine different members. They are:

“The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia is just over a year old and our members are already producing homes to this higher standard of construction,” remarked council Chairman Mike Lowman. “These companies, along with the other members of the council, have really embraced the program and we look forward to certifying more homes in the near future.”

The Build Green Greater Columbia program is administered by the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia, which is a council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia and is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Green building program. Homes in the program are third-party verified to ensure that they meet the criteria as outlined. There are three levels of certification in the Build Green Greater Columbia program: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Homes that are certified in the program are listed on the Council website at www.columbiagreenbuilders.com and are marked with the Build Green Greater Columbia logo on the main electrical panel box door.

Learn more about green residential construction, the Build Green Greater Columbia program and see a list of members of the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia, please visit the Council’s website at www.columbiagreenbuilders.com.

ANSI approves National Green Standard...

In 2007 the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC) partnered to form to establish a much-needed and nationally-recognizable standard definition of what is meant by “Green Building.”

A consensus committee was formed to develop this standard in compliance with the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The resulting ANSI approved ICC-700-2008 National Green Building Standard defines green building for single and multifamily homes, residential remodeling projects and site development projects while still allowing for the flexibility required for regionally-appropriate best green practices.

Similar to the NAHB Model Green Homebuilding Guidelines, a builder, remodeler or developer must incorporate a minimum number of features in the following areas: energy, water, and resource efficiency, lot and site development, indoor environmental quality, and home owner education. The more points accrued, the higher the score.

The Standard, however, includes more mandatory items and suggests that higher thresholds be met in several categories. A new threshold - “Emerald” - was added to denote the highest achievement in residential green construction. The following tables highlight the point values required in each area for green buildings and subdivisions.

These annual awards are given each year to one Builder member of the council and one Associate member of the council.
