Key Features
• Key features
– Curriculum developed to achieve CEFR Equals “Can-do” Statements
– Language testing accreditation practice
– Functional + CLIL based English learning
– Immersive Modular structure with balanced input and output activities.
– Communicative and fluency activities to tie modules/lessons together
1. Paul Nation breaks language learning into four strands:
• meaning-focused input • meaning-focused output• language-focused learning• fluency development
He stresses that in most language courses, too much time is spent on the 3rd strand, which emphasizes learning, and not on the others, which emphasize doing.
2. This approach addresses the problem pointed out by Nation. Competency is acquired through doing, or practice. Students do things in order to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills that the course aims to develop in them.
3. A modular structure enables “learners to achieve a level of competence which should be described in terms other than just grammar, vocabulary or functions.”Units remain as a subdivision of modules.
4. A task-based approach incorporates all the 4 strands. Successful performance of a task indicates that the student has acquired the target competency.
