MEDICATION If it becomes necessary for a student to take any type of medication at school, a signed form from a parent/guardian must be presented to the office. All medication will be kept in and dispensed through the main office.

LOCKERS Lockers are issued to students at the beginning of the year by the administration. Your locker should be kept locked if possible. Each student is responsible for keeping his/her assigned locker clean both inside and outside. Damages caused by misuse of tape, etc. will be charged to the student responsible. Any locker malfunction should be reported to the office. Students are cautioned not to keep money or other valuables in their lockers. Turn in such items to the office for safekeeping. This would apply to athletic lockers as well. Lockers are school property and may be searched without cause or upon reasonable suspicion that school policy or the law is being violated.

ANNOUNCEMENTS – MOMENT OF SILENCE The school office will provide a weekly bulletin each week. Announcements not on the bulletin should be turned into the office to be announced. Announcements will be made each morning following the student led Pledge of Allegiance and the moment of silence. Each school site will observe a moment of silence each day for the purpose of allowing each student to meditate, pray, or engage in any other silent activity that does not interfere with, distract, or impede other students in the exercise of their choice.

VISITORS Because of the safety of our students and faculty/staff, ALL visitors must report directly to the main office when entering the school buildings.

CAFETERIA and LUNCH Student behavior in the cafeteria should be based on courtesy and cleanliness. Students are to remain in the cafeteria until released by duty teacher. Students are not to go into areas where classes are being held during their lunch hour. They are to stay in designated areas only where duty teacher is available for monitoring. Breakfast is served daily in our cafeteria beginning at 7:45 am. Students may enjoy a breakfast of cereal, milk, juice, muffins and a variety of foods. Bluejacket School serves hot lunches daily in our cafeteria. We ask our parents/guardians to pay by the week and have no outstanding charges of $10 or more. Extra milk is available for $0.35 or 3 for $1. Free and reduced lunch applications are available at any time. We encourage parents/guardians to take advantage of the school lunch program. The funding by the federal government to schools is directly related to the numbers of free and reduced lunch applications. So PLEASE take advantage of this program. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to be in school except in cases of emergency or for reasons as explained in the code below:

1. Personal Illness – The school may require the certificate of a doctor if it is deemed advisable.

2. Illness in the family – All schoolwork should be kept current. 3. Quarantine in the home – The absence arising from this condition is limited to

three days, unless reasonable cause may be shown by parent, guardian, or doctor for a long absence.

4. Observance of religious holiday – Any student of any religion shall be excused if his absence was for purpose of observing a religious holiday consistent with his creed or belief.

THE SCHOOL, PRIOR TO THE ABSENCE, MUST EXCUSE ANY OTHER REASON.

5. If absence is due to travel or other personal reason, parents/guardians should notify the school prior to the absences. (The absences may be unexcused.)

6. Excused absences will not adversely affect a students’ grade. Students will be allowed (1) day to make-up work for each day missed.

If the student is absent nine (9) days in one semester, whether excused or unexcused, the student will receive an “F” for that semester. ALL truant students will be reported to the Craig County District Attorney’s Office. Exceptions due to extreme circumstances will be at the discretion of the administration.

TARDINESS Promptness to class is very important. Students are to be in their seats with their pencil/pen, paper, and textbooks ready to work when the tardy bell sounds. Unexcused tardiness is unacceptable and a detention will be assigned on a student’s third unexcused tardy of each nine week period. Additional detentions or possible in school suspension may be assigned if tardiness persists. Three tardies shall equal one absence when determining attendance totals.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT To be concurrently enrolled in NEO A&M, seniors must have a 19 composite on their ACT and 19 in the subject area in which they wish to take. High school credit will be awarded for successfully completing comparable course work. These credits will be counted toward the total units required for graduation from Bluejacket Public School. Eligible students will receive free tuition paid by the Oklahoma State Regents.

GRADING SYSTEM, REPORT CARDS, and HONOR ROLL The evaluation of student achievement is one of the important functions of the teacher. The accepted marking system is as follows:

A – Excellent 90 – 100% D – Poor 60 – 69% B – Good 80 – 89% F – Failure 0 – 59% C – Average 70 – 79% I – Incomplete

Each Semester grades will be figured: 6/7 cumulative through both nine weeks and 1/7 for semester test. Semester Test Exemptions will be calculated in the following manner: “A” grade and 3 or fewer absences, “B” grade and 2 or fewer absences, “C” grade and 1 or fewer absences. Students with D or F grade will be required to take semester tests. Students and Teachers should keep in mind that 3 tardies will be counted as one daily absence when figuring exemptions. Students will receive one report card for each grading period. All report cards are given as soon as possible following the end of the grading period. Report cards will not be issued until all fees and fines have been paid. Progress reports are compiled and sent to parents/guardians when a student is failing a subject midway through a given nine-week period. An honor roll will be published at the end of each nine-week grading period. This is not an average or point system. It will be an all A or B Honor Roll, one grade lower than a B will eliminate a student from the Honor Roll.

GUIDANCE The purpose of the guidance program is to help each individual student achieve his/her highest growth mentally, emotionally, and socially. We try to do this in several ways:

1. Helping the new student feel at home in our school with new teachers and friends in a different setting.

2. Individual conferences whenever a student, a teacher, or the counselor deems it necessary.

3. A testing program designed to help the student learn as much as possible about his/her capabilities. Proficiency testing is offered the first day of each semester.

4. The counselor welcomes the opportunity to talk things over with any student, parent, or teacher.

5. The school district must provide to parents, students, and the public at large the proper meaning and use of state tests.

6. Counselors will maintain accurate records for student promotion and graduation.

ASBESTOS AND OTHER HAZARDS Bluejacket Public Schools have building materials that contain asbestos. Inspections are performed periodically. Information on asbestos and the dangers of lead hazards in the environment can be obtained from the following websites: http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/ http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/asbestos/

Meningococcal Meningitis

Meningococcal meningitis occurs as a communicable disease between humans. It occurs when the cerebrospinal fluid is invaded by the blood-borne organism. Meningitis originates in the respiratory tract, the meningococcal bacteria travels, via the blood, into the cerebrospinal fluid (the watery liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord). During infection, the bacterium releases a toxin into the fluid causing an inflammatory reaction. If the bacteria invades the blood, it can lead to arthritis, heart infections and pneumonia. If it damages the nerves leading into the brain it could cause hearing loss, learning disabilities, motor impairment or mental retardation.

Symptoms of Meningococcal Meningitis The most common symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are: Fever, Chills, Headache, Vomiting, Stiff neck, Rash, Confusion. Other Symptoms may also include: Seizures, Coma, the inability to completely extend the legs, Stiffness in knees and hips, Shock. The symptoms may appear 2 to 10 days after exposure, but usually within 5 days.

Treatment of Meningococcal Meningitis Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency. Every hour of delay in starting antibacterial therapy increases the risk of complications and permanent neurological damage. Treatment with intravenous antibiotics should be started immediately, in some cases even before the lumbar puncture. The regimen of intravenous antibiotics may be continued for 7-10 days.

Prevention of Meningococcal Meningitis A vaccine called meningococcal polysaccharide is used to prevent infection by certain groups of meningococcal bacteria. The vaccine works by causing the body to produce its own antibodies against the disease. The vaccine is recommended for persons who are: age two (2) or older, susceptible to certain conditions that may cause meningococcal meningitis, living in, working in, or visiting an area where there is a high incidence of meningococcal infection, exposed to areas where the epidemic is occurring and the cases are due to Groups A, C, Y, and W-135, military recruits, and/or have no spleen. For more information regarding Meningococcal Meningitis you may contact your local Health Department.
