    CHAPTER1: WHENTO USEA LAN EXPANSION MODULE

    Packeteers PacketShaper offers visibility into networkapplication performance and the ability to control it whenneeded. They monitor and manage traffic at WAN accesslinks, ensuring a smooth flow that maximizes throughput andspeeds critical traffic. A half-height LAN Expansion Moduleextends these benefits to topologies that incorporate multipleLANs.

    The following scenarios are examples of situations thatrequire a Lan Expansion Module:

    You want to manage a single WAN link and yournetwork includes a firewall/router that splits yournetwork into two separate LANs: a protected segmentand a DMZ segment.

    You want to manage a single WAN link and yournetwork includes a router with multiple LANsegments.

    You have a single WAN link and your networkincludes a router with two LANs; one segment mayconnect to the LAN through a firewall and the other toa VPN tunnel management device.

    Your network includes branch offices with two orthree separate LANs that you manage, and only oneWAN link.

    LAN Expansion Module Requirements

    The software for the half-height LAN Expansion Module, orLEM,

    is included in PacketWise version 7.3 and all later versions.

    LANs connected to this copper-connector LEM module must use10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 1000BaseT RJ-45 Ethernet ports or usefiber optic conversion units for fiber optic networks.

    LED

    Indicators

    The front panel of the LEM has the following LED indicators

    beside each port.

    LED

    IndicatorDescription

    Link Illuminated when the network cable isproperly connected

    Tx/Rx Illuminated when network cable is properlyconnected; flickers when the unit istransmitting and receiving data

    Speed When properly installed, the speed LEDcolor on the LEM moduleindicates that theLEM is operating at the following speeds:

    amber = 1GB

    green = 100MB

    off = 10MB

    CHAPTER2: INSTALLINTOA 3500/7500 MODEL

    This chapter describes how to install the half-height LANExpansion Module into the following Packeteer units:

    PacketShaper 3500 PacketShaper 7500 PacketShaper 7500/ISP

    The directions in this chapter apply only to these models,

    which are hereafter collectively referred to as an 3500/7500model.

    The following illustration shows a unit with two LEMs, for atotal of three LANs using one 3500/7500 model. This is amaximum configuration; you can install only one module ifyou wish. Directions begin on page 2-2.

    Installing the LEM into a 3500/7500 model

    To install the half-height LEM into a 3500/7500 model:

    1. Disconnect the PacketShaper from any telecommunicationlinks, networks, or modems, and then turn off the systempower source(s). WARNING: Failure to do so before youopen the PacketShaper or do any procedures can result inpersonal injury or equipment damage.

    2. Ensure that you are in a dust-free environment. Dustparticles may damage or impair the connector openings.

    3. Ground yourself. WARNING: Electrostatic discharge(ESD) can damage system components. If an ESD station isnot available, wear a wrist strap attached to a metal part ofthe PacketShaper. If you dont have a strap, touch somemetal part of the box to ground yourself.

    4. Remove the screws from the LEM door panel, then tilt and

    lift off the panel.

    5. Remove the blank faceplace covering a LEM slot.

    6. If the unit is or will be operating in standby mode, removethe jumpers from the module as shown below.

    Note: Do not discard the jumpers; you will have to replacethem if you later wish to disable standby mode. For additionalinformation on enabling or disabling standby mode, refer tothe latest Getting Started Guide for your Packeteer unit,available at http://support.packeteer.com/documentation.

    Verify the Installation

    Access the units browser interface and check the setup tab to be

    sure your card has been recognized by the system. It should looksomething like the one below.

    From the setup page, select one of the following NIC modes foreach LEM interface: 10BaseT half-duplex, 10BaseT full-duplex,100BaseT half-duplex, 100BaseT full-duplex, 1000BaseT full-duplex.Auto-negotiate is the default network communicationselection.

    Note: Selecting 1000BaseT full-duplex causes the unit toauto-negotiate per IEEE standard.

    The screen above indicates that the built-in LEM card for this unitis 100 Megabits, the left slot contains a 100 Megabit LEM, and theright slot contains a Gigabit LEM.

    Managing Traffic with Three LANs

    Traffic from all three LANs is now being tracked by one unit. The

    traffic classes will reflect the combined traffic from all three LANs.For example, POP3 will include POP3 traffic from LAN A, LANB, and LAN C.

    If you wanted to manage the individual LAN traffic to/from theWAN, you would create a class for each subnet and put classessuch as POP3 under each subnet class.

    Note: Even though traffic classes are combined, each LANstraffic is an individual flow; 3500/7500 models cannot routetraffic between LANs. For example, if one LAN has publicservers and the other does not, the security of the non-publicLAN will not be compromised.

    Traffic between LANs (LAN A to LAN B for example) should notbe controlled with traffic shaping, as it may slow the WAN speed.By default, units auto-discover such traffic as sameside andapply an ignore policy.
