  • 4THE BLUE BOOKHow to use these studiesThese studies should be done in the context of friendship - friends meeting at home, at church, in a caf or in any other place. The studies can be used one-on-one or in a group. But the important thing is that you have a real relationship with the people you share with, in which you really know their needs (spiritual, physical, emotional, social etc.) and can create an opportunity to help them.

  • 5Prepare in prayer before you meet your friend. God will lead you to know what to do with the study. God really wants to bless your friends be confident that He will use His Word, your experience and these studies to help you minister to your friend. Be prepared to share your own answers or stories from your heart (Ask your friend).

    1. Prayer

It is important to select the right study according to your friends interests and growth in Jesus. We should always be aware of this and choose the best study for that time. Dont feel that you have to do the studies in order or that you have to do every one of them. If we know our friends and know the studies then we can make a good match each time. You may also need to add to or skip some of the content of a study to adjust it according to the amount of time or the focus that you have.

    2. Selecting the right study

Be aware of how you can manage the group and the time well. You may want to add warm-up questions or follow-up questions; or refer to your experience or other scriptures in order to focus on a particular area. Give everyone chances to answer, encourage people if theyre shy, make the questions easier when necessary. As you reflect on the way you lead studies, you can get better and better at this.

    3. Time management

Be intentional about the way you use these studies to help disciple your friends. It is Gods desire that we all grow closer to Him. Take every opportunity to point your friends towards Jesus and challenge them towards growth in Him.

    4. Discipleship

  • 6ZACCHAEUS A seeker is found!

    SEEKING JESUS

What kind of person do you think Zacchaeus was?

Why do you think Zacchaeus was interested in Jesus?

    FOUND BY JESUS

How do you think Zacchaeus felt when Jesus spoke to Him?

Zacchaeus was a man who climbed a tree so that he could see Jesus. But Jesus was also looking for Zacchaeus and that day his life was changed!

(Luke 19:1-10 NIV) Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

In what way was Zacchaeus lost?

    SAVED BY JESUS

How and why did Zacchaeus change when he met Jesus?

Why do you think Jesus said that Zacchaeus was now saved?

  • 7LUKE 19:10NIV

    LIFES FOUNDATIONSBuilding on the rock

    BUILDING YOUR LIFE

In the story, what do you think the house represents?

What are the differences between a wise person and a foolish person in this story?

    THE FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE

Why do you think that it's important to have strong foundations to build our lives on?

What kind of things do we build our lives on? (e.g. relationships, education)

Jesus taught many things in the Bible that can help us in our lives. In this story that Jesus told, we can learn how important it is to build our lives on a strong foundation.

(Matthew 7:24-27 NIV) "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

    THE STORMS OF LIFE

The rain and the wind represent troubles that come in our lives. What are some examples of the difficulties we face in life?

How could the storms of life destroy our house?

  • 13

MATTHEW 7:24 NIV"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. "

What are the foundations of your life?

Have your foundations been strong through the storms of life?

How can you make the foundations of your life stronger?

In which areas of your life do you think you could depend on God more?

Lord Jesus, please help me to be wise as I make important decisions about my life. Please show me where my foundations are weak and please make them stronger as I trust in You.

[Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-6] What happened after Jesus died?

FOUR BASIC TRUTHS ABOUT GODJust as there are physical laws, like gravity, that govern our universe, there are also basic Biblical principles that show us how we can relate to God.

God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.

    1. God's Love [Read John 3:16] How has God shown His love to us?

    2. God's Plan [Read John 10:10] What did Jesus come to give us?

We are sinful and separated from God. Therefore, we cannot know and experience God's love and His plan for our lives.

    3. We are sinful [Read Romans 3:23] What do you think sin is?

    4. We are separated [Read Romans 6:23, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9] How and why are we try to use to fill this between us and God?

What other things do we try to use to fill this gap between us and God?

Jesus Christ is God's only solution to our sin. Through Him we can know and experience God's love and His plan for our lives.

[Read Romans 5:8] What did Jesus do for us?

When and why did you start to believe in Jesus?

We need to receive Christ - John 1:12

We can receive Christ through faith - Ephesians 2:8-9 When we receive Christ, we experience a new birth - John 3:1-8

These decisions are personal decisions - Revelation 3:20

If you have not yet received Jesus in your life, would you like to receive him?

Lord Jesus, I thank You that You love me and You died for me to pay the penalty for my sins. Please forgive my sins and come into my heart. Thank You, Jesus.

    OVERCOMING REJECTIONGod accepts us

    THE PAIN OF REJECTION

[Read John 4:3-29] and answer these questions.

This woman came to the well by herself in the middle of a hot day because she was rejected in her society for getting married many times. [Read John 4:7-9] Why was the woman surprised by Jesus?

In life, what can happen to make people feel rejected?

What are some of the consequences of feeling rejected?

What do people do in order to be accepted by others?

How did Jesus show that He accepted the woman?

    JESUS WAS REJECTED

[Read Isaiah 53:3, 1 Peter 2:4] How do we know that Jesus can understand our feelings about rejection?

Most people will feel rejected at some time in their life. Being hurt by people close to us and being in broken relationships can make us feel unwanted and alone. The Good News is that God heals our pain and He accepts us and loves us unconditionally.

    HOW CAN WE OVERCOME REJECTION?

In this story in John 4, the womans life was completely changed when she decided to believe what Jesus said. Lets take these steps and apply these verses to our lives.

    1. Accept Gods unconditional love - Ephesians 1:4-6

    2. Exchange your needs for Gods Living Water - John 4:14-15

    3. Rejoice that you have become Gods child! - Galatians 4:6-7

HEBREWS 13:5 NIV"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

    Have you ever felt rejected?

How can you know that God accepts you?

As we pray, lets ask God to search our hearts and reveal to us any rejection that were holding on to and the affect that it has had on our lives. Remember that God accepts us and loves us unconditionally and he can heal us from the pain of rejection.

Lord Jesus, I thank You that You love me and accept me. I give my feelings of rejection to You and ask You to heal me as I forgive those who have hurt me. Thank You that You have made me Your child.

Reading and thinking about Gods word daily helps us to grow stronger and closer to God. A journaling model like the one below will help you to make a habit of Bible reading and to apply Gods word to your life everyday.

A Bible reading plan will help you to decide purposefully what to read, there is an example over the page. Take opportunities to look back at what God has been saying to you, and be ready to share Gods fresh word with your friends.

    How To Journal

    JOURNALING MODEL

    1. Write the date.

    2. Write Theme next to the date, but leave it blank till later.

    3. Note the Bible text that you will read for that day.

    4. Write some thoughts from the passage, noting a key thought.

    5. Write a one-line prayer from the key thought.

    6. Go back and fill in the Theme using just a phrase.

After a few weeks you will see patterns in what God is saying to you for your life.

Look at the next page for examples of journaling.
