What is the Derby Dash Bash?The Derby Dash Bash is an annual fund raising event held on the first Saturday in May concurrent with

the running of the Kentucky Derby. The money raised helps RHR support our operating expenses such

as care of our horses, maintenance of our facility, utilities and employee expenses. Those attending the

Derby Dash Bash will enjoy appetizers, drinks, dinner, dessert, live music, a Kentucky Derby race raffle,

ladies Derby hat contest, silent and live auctions and viewing of the Kentucky Derby. We are seeking

both individual and corporate sponsors, as well as community support through the sale of tickets.

What is therapeutic riding?Therapeutic horseback riding is a therapeutic intervention used by certified therapeutic riding

instructors and allied health professionals for individuals who are physically, cognitively, or emotionally

challenged. The three dimensional movement of the horse stimulates the rider to improve mobility,

posture, balance, coordination, and responsibility. By successfully participating in riding activities that

challenge them, riders gain self-confidence and learn to trust their helpers and their horses. The

ultimate goal is to improve each rider’s functional abilities and to help them become more independent,

productive and active members of the community. The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship

International (PATHIntl, Formerly NARHA) was formed in 1969 to promote the practice of therapeutic riding

and equine related activities. PATHIntl is a membership organization that accredits operating centers, certifies

riding instructors and therapists, and standardizes safety and operating procedures. There are over 800

member centers in the United States and internationally serving over 42,000 students annually.

What is Rocking Horse Ranch Therapeutic Riding Program, Inc?Rocking Horse Ranch was founded in 1991 to provide equine assisted activities and equine assisted therapy

to children and adults with disabilities in eastern North Carolina. It is the oldest active program in

this part of the state, the only one in Pitt County, and one of only 2 PATHIntl programs east of I-95. In the fall

of 2003, RHR moved to Blue Banks Farm, which it now operates as a full time, dedicated therapeutic riding

facility. Our staff of credentialed therapeutic riding instructors and therapists conducts all of our classes,

which are tailored to meet the specific needs of each rider. Lessons are structured to provide each

student the assistance he/she needs to be successful while stressing the achievement of maximum

independence under safe and controlled conditions. Many able-bodied members of the community are

integrated into the program as volunteers assisting the riders during lessons. Riders come from

several cities in addition to Greenville, including Wilson, Washington, Kinston, Rocky Mount, Tarboro,

and New Bern. Riders’ disabilites include cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delay, Down Syndrome,

spina bifida, ADHD, visual and hearing impairments, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and

head/spinal cord injury. Over 70% of our operating budget comes from donations, grants, and fund raising

TestimonialsAnne BRocking Horse Ranch is simply everything to me. I was diagnosed with MS in 1992 and was in a wheelchair at one point. I have fought every inch of the way to improve my quality of life, and everyone at the barn is part of my team of recovery. Even just being at the barn feels relaxing. I love the community of the horses, volunteers and staff. I feel happy here, and just the smell of the horses and the barn makes me smile! I encourage anyone with MS to find something they love doing as much as I love therapeutic riding!

Serena AMy daughter Serena has been riding at Rocking Horse Ranch for a few years. She began with therapeutic riding lessons and then joined the girls’ interactive vaulting program. As an instructor I already knew what RHR offered, but now as the mom of a rider, I have a deeper personal sense of what riding has given my daughter. Serena has not only grown in her balance and strength, she has greater self-esteem and respect for herself and her abilities. Here are her words about riding: "My best experience at Rocking Horse Ranch happened when I got to kneel on Happy during a vaulting lesson. It felt good on my knees, and I had my hands out in the air. I felt the wind, and it felt like I was flying. I like Happy because he’s just like his name!"

TristanMy two sons ride in a class together. Tristan’s eleven years old, and he started riding in 2007. To me he’s perfect, but he’s also a complicated boy with multiple medical diagnoses and disabilities. He didn’t speak or process well, had no expression, little focus, poor short and long term memory, and was sometimes aggressive. He didn’t like leaving his comfort zone and preferred staying home all day, every day. His muscles were weak, and he didn’t enjoy physical activity. He was just existing not truly living. When we first came to RHR, Linda suggested we take it slow and see if therapeutic riding was a good fit for Tristan. It turned out to be perfect. He rode Patch for several years and loves him still. He’s learned patience, kindness and to speak when he wants something. He even smiles and listens. At first he didn’t like to trot and would say “whoa” with his new found big voice. Now he happily trots and is learning 2 point. He’s even moving towards independently riding Dakota. He’s not the child you would have met 7 years ago. With his great experiences at RHR, he’s a living success, who loves life, RHR, and basketball.

AshtonHis brother Ashton’s a very smart young man but has severe ADHD. He couldn’t pay attention, always jumped into others’ conversations, and talked about something totally else at the same time. He couldn’t complete any one task given to him. I took him to the doctor and turned him into a zombie with medicine. He focused so well but became unhealthy and didn’t gain weight. When I took him off the medicine, he quickly started failing school. Because of Tristan’s success, I enrolled Ashton into riding lessons too. At RHR, he’s been working so hard on his focus and listening skills. As a result, he’s doing better in school, being responsible, gaining weight and improving his immune system. The guidance counselor called last week to tell me that he remembered to bring her the form signed, 15 minutes late, but he came for the first time on his own. Amazing!!! He looks forward to RHR and doesn’t consider it work. The instructors are amazing. They’re so attentive to his goals. He rides independently, focuses on lesson plans, and reaches for the sky. RHR is like family to us!
