This was supposed to be his gig.
That's the most touching, largely unspoken thing about this group of players coming together to honorthe memory of Jim Hall this weekend. They were all supposed to be sharing the stage with him Fridayand Saturday night at the Blue Note. Already planned and booked before the jazz guitar great diedlast December, barely two weeks after playing a pair of shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
"This was on the books for Jim," said Brian Camelio, producer of Hall's last six albums on ArtistShare."It was supposed to be Julian (Lage), Bill (Frisell), Jim, Scott Colley and Joey Baron. Jim's wife,Jane, and daughter Devra (Hall Levy) decided it would be a nice memorial to have his friends comeand play for him, basically filling in his gig for him, subbing in for him."
Camelio, who also will sit in on Saturday night, got to know Hall both as a friend and as a player whenthe two would play duo guitar shows.
"I did a few concerts with him," Camelio said. "He actually was one of my best friends. I knew him forover 20 years. It’s such an amazing experience to play with the guy. When you get on stage with him,he just instantly connects with something else, and it comes from God knows where. You could playanything and he’d make you sound amazing."

the same, with Frisell havingrecorded a double CD,"Hemispheres," with Hall, bassistColley and drummer Baron.Julian Lage, the youngest of thegroup, played duo shows withHall last year and actually firstmet Hall when he was much, much younger -- when he was11.
"I was obsessed with Jim Hallgrowing up in California," Lagesaid, "and the closest club to mewas Yoshi's. My guitar teachercalled and said Jim was coming,so we went to the opening nightof his week. I was in the frontrow, first table with my parents. Iremember Jim walking out thebackstage door and my dadjoking, 'He's looking for you,"teasing me. Sure enough, hewas. He walked through thewhole audience right to our table
and said, 'Hi, I'm Jim Hall! I heard you're a guitar player!
"A mutual friend, Dr. Herb Wong, such a staple of the jazz community, had told Jim, there's this cutekid who's obsessed with you, and Jim took it on himself to come over. It was unforgettably special. And I went as many nights of the rest of the week as I could. He hung out and had coffee with me andmy mom, and I'd get calls from him every few months or so to say, 'hi.' "
Two nights really isn't enough for Hall's friends to pay tribute, so Sunday night will feature a guitar lineup of Russell Malone, Adam Rogers, Nels Cline, John Abercrombie, John Pondel andSatoshi Inoue, with Bill Charlap on keys supporting Colley and Baron.
But until then, there's a standing gig to be honored.
"It was kind of surreal, initially," Lage said of the original booking. "The three of us? Coolest thing ever!I'm grateful it was secured schedulingwise as a memorial, and to do it with Bill. As sad as we are,we're equally excited to celebrate. It's a sense of, God, we really have to celebrate this guy we lovedthis much."
