FUN RUN / FAMILY WALK - IN LEURA

E D I T O R S W O R D

At times we wish the Echo was 48 pages in size and came out fortnightly...

There is so much to include , the communities we serve are so active and each and every group and club are so deserved of some positive publicity.

We were really happy to receive some great contribution in the last few months from residents and local clubs and it has been a privilege to be able to touch a little on our local Rotary clubs and what it means to be a Rotarian. We are also hoping to inspire some people perhaps new to the Mountains to go along to some of the various meetings and gatherings and meet new people and feel part of our wonderful communities.

The next few months are full of energy as more than a few festivals take place.

It is a great time of year, sort of an awakening from a slumber. The Leura Gardens Festival we feel deserves a special mention as it is an amazing show of dedication by hundreds of volunteers and surely the most successful annual Festival organised to support our local hospital. This Festival starts in early October and has a huge offering at a very low price. Keep an eye out for the program!

There is also but a little more to do throughout the next few months, The Festival of Walking gives us 9 days worth of walks and activities with some FREE walks suitable for families and some fun walks to join and meet new people. There is also a host of professionally run walks with qualified guides with huge amounts of local knowledge...

The first annual Fun Run on the

Leura Golf Course includes a family 3km option - run it or walk it - fancy dress optional, and a 5km option with prizemoney. This event will see in daylight savings and offers a Kids Dash as well with every participating child winning a prize on the day. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the evening!

Check out the pages within for more festivals and exhibitions and events!!

We will keep doing our best to ensure things bought to our attention are highlighted. For the future if you have a contribution to make - feel free to put it forward by email. [email protected]

LEURA GARDENS FESTIVAL EXCITING CHANGES

Leura Gardens Festival 2012 will see some exciting changes to this ever popular Blue Mountains spring event.

Three new gardens will be featured among the eleven gardens on display.1. Blue Mist originally created by Paul Sorensen is a ‘magical garden’ full of visual delights and surprises and has dramatic and sweeping views of the Jamison Valley and escarpment. 2. Davaar dates back to the early 1900’s and has a blend of woodland, old English and semi-formal features including a small medieval style knot garden.3. Walforf is the third new addition to the Festival and once again the artistry of Paul Sorensen is much in evidence in this large rambling estate style garden with loads of exciting features.

Visitors will once again be able to interact with some of the garden owners who will be on hand to share their knowledge and offer advice and gardening tips. The Festival nursery will also have a wide range of both exotics and native plants for sale at great prices.

For the first time in its 48 year history an exciting events programme will be included in the Festival.

Over two days during the Festival a series of horticultural related demonstrations and talks will take place ‘Under the Marquee’ at the Fairmont resort. The events programme will feature such noted gardening and horticultural experts as Judy Horton Australian gardening author and editor of Yates Garden Guide and a regular on ABC and radio 2UE. Barry Jarrott will show you how to produce veggies throughout the year in a small space. Clinton Nesci will demonstrate the art of Bonsai and Bill Grattan will give a presentation and talk on camellias. Doug and Glynis Hayne, two of the country’s foremost experts on roses will also be sharing their knowledge. A featured keynote speaker will be Professor David Mabberley Executive Director of Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust.

On the last day of the Festival there will be a “Twilight Ramble” fun run/walk on the Leura Golf course followed by a sausage sizzle, all age groups are welcome.Leura Gardens Festival 29th September to 7th October daily: 9.30am to 4.30pm. Once upon a time .... In Blackheath...Blackheath to Sydney in 20 minutes…… now there’s a commute to dream about. In 1938 that was an offer presented to Blackheath Municipal Council by an aviation company if the aerodrome at Blackheath was built. Covering a distance of 30 air miles to Mascot a fare was proposed of 15 shillings one way and 25 shillings return.

The push for an airstrip at Blackheath goes back to the 1920’s, both for prestige as a tourist area and as a safe landing place for aircraft flying over the mountains. Despite a number of proposed sites being inspected none was found suitable until 1938, when the site off Hat Hill Road was approved as suitable for light multi-engined aircraft. The design proposed was for 2 gravel surface strips each 50 feet wide, the main runway 2800 feet long and the cross runway 1650 feet long.

The death of two airmen in the Megalong Valley in January 1939 added pressure from the Coroner for a safe landing ground to be built. On 24 March 1939 the SMH reported ‘work has commenced on the clearing and levelling of the Blackheath Aerodrome. Blackheath Council acquired the land and the preparation of the aerodrome was undertaken by the Government as a National work’.

Perhaps another reason for its existence can be found in this quote by The State Minister for Work and Local Government Mr Eric Spooner in the Sydney Morning Herald on 18 April 1939 on Blackheath aerodrome: ‘because of the great importance of aviation in Australia’s development and protection, it was obviously wise to provide aerodromes where they would not only be of most service to civil aviation, but would also be an adjunct to the defence system in time of war’. Keep in mind that the Small Arms Factory was located at Lithgow.

Once built, the aerodrome however saw little use, mainly for light aircraft movements and training flights. It came to prominence on 19 March 1946 when ‘an immense crowd’ gathered to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester when their aircraft landed at the aerodrome. The Duke was then the Governor General of Australia and was attending to open extensions to

Katoomba Hospital. The airfield lost its registration in the 1950’s due to the lack of facilities, insufficient size and limited use. The

cost to upgrade it to acceptable standards to continue as an airstrip was deemed unacceptable. And the 20 minute commute……..keep dreaming !

Festival of Walking 2012 - a family affair!

Amongst the 60+ walks scheduled in this October’s Festival of Walking, there are plenty of alternatives for those who want to enjoy the festival with Family and Friends.

“The Festival is not for hardened wilderness athletes only,” said Sean Greenhill, Director of the Festival. “We’ve worked with a number of local community groups and experienced local providers to ensure there is a variety of family focused walks on the calendar.”

Family friendly walks, although just some of the walks on offer are many and varied and the costs are relatively low making for a great festival for families seeking activities on a budget.

The range of family friendly walks includes Discovery Walks all hosted by qualified Discovery Rangers from NPWS, Geocaching, a hi tec “treasure hunt” where families use their GPS device (phone or dedicated) to find hidden treasure and claim their special Festival of Walking Pathtag as a souvenier, River Cave Walks, Eco Walks and a Family Fun Run and Walk - including fancy dress categories!

On opening day - the 6th of October families are invited to enjoy a Discovery Walk with the NPWS Rangers and make their way to the Wentworth Falls Picnic Ground for the Festival Opening and a BBQ Lunch.

“The Festival is intended to be very inclusive” said Sean. “We hope that everyone will find a walk that interests them and is within their budget.”

More information on the Festival can be found at www.festivalofwalking.com or from the guidebooks being distributed around the region from late August.

THE NILS® SCHEME - BREAK THE CYCLE...

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts said NSW Fair Trading’s NILS® administration program provides funding contributions for salaries and salary on-costs of employees of community-based, non-profit organisations.

NILS® provides interest-free loans of up to $1,200 to low income earners for the purchase of essential household or medical goods and services,” he said. “The program is funded to a total of $2.18 million per annum and this funding provides for the salaries of more than 80 NILS® workers across 62 services in NSW. “In the last financial year, this funding helped NILS® to provide more than 9,000 loans totalling more than $7.5 million in NSW.”

The Minister presented a cheque for $18,939 to Mid-Mountains NILS® Lawson; a cheque for $18,939 to Winmalee Neighbourhood Centre; a cheque for $80,569 NSW NILS® 1800 Freecall Services; and a cheque for $37,879 to Blackheath Neighbourhood Centre NILS®. “NILS® plays an important role in providing an alternative to payday lenders and expensive rent-to-buy schemes and, in doing so, helps break the poverty cycle. “The efforts of NILS® providers are having a positive impact in improving social inclusion and building important economic foundations, while at the same time dispelling the myths that low income earners cannot manage budgets,” Mr Roberts said.

Please help preserve a recreational amenity in the the Upper Blue Mountains;

The Blackheath Airstrip..

The Blackheath Airstrip Community Group (BACG) has been formed to address several concerns regarding the airstrip development, including lack of consultation during the stages of the process, and losing a favourite community space. Our core group is small but we represent a large number of locals, many of whom are business and community leaders who are busy but have expressed support. It is a popular area with local young people for active recreation and also with older people and weekenders who enjoy walking in, and living near, a traffic free area near the bush and local wildlife. Further afield, the Airstrip’s use as a dog run draws people from the lower mountains and indeed Sydney. We believe the consultation process now in place is insulting and only put in motion after the decision was made. We consider that not all activities at the Airstrip are being considered, that the flora and fauna survey being done is incomplete and planning for emergencies (eg fire) is inadequate. Unfortunately, the Blackheath community has drawn criticism because of this saga. Members of our group have received abusive personal communications calling them ‘elitist’, ‘angry’, ‘selfish’ and worse. The comparison has been drawn with the Springwood redevelopment. This is not a competition between Blackheath and Springwood, although that appears to be the political spin cast by certain Council members. All we are trying to do is protect an awesome community space. At the election, we can only hope that a fresher, more innovative council will be elected- one that actually considers the communities that voted them into power and believes in their own tag line, ‘A City within a World Heritage Area”. To support our actions, please sign our petition at: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/petition-for-the-creation-of-old-blackheath-airstrip-as/signatures.html or keep up to date with what we are doing at our blog spot: http://blackheathairstripcommunitygroup.blogspot.com.au/

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 KEYS

Mount Victoria based concert pianist, David Scheel, has established an enviable worldwide reputation for making fun of the classics, so when he decides to do a “straight” recital it is truly something of a rarity. “Around the World in 80 Keys” will take the audience on a whistle-stop tour of music from many countries, and so as not to disappoint his comedy fans, yes, there will be a lot of laughs too, both in the music and in the introductions to the pieces.

“Every piece I’ve chosen has a story to tell,” says David. “There will be a world premiere of a piece written 150 years ago by someone very famous, but not as a composer. Also a work by French composer, Charles Koechlin, who wrote all his best music after he passed 70, plus a beautiful and almost unknown work by Beethoven. Debussy, Ibert, William Byrd and Grieg will also feature, as well as piano arrangements of famous Spanish guitar works, and my own compositions, to coincide with the release of my newest album.” David will also be joined by soprano, Tina Banasiak, in a tribute to two English songwriters, Haydn Wood and Ivor Novello.

David has long been regarded as the successor to the legendary Victor Borge, and a global touring schedule means he rarely gets to perform locally. “Around the World in 80 Keys” will be presented at Blackheath Uniting Church, on Sunday, 30th September at 2.30 p.m.

Tickets are available from Blackheath Newsagency. Enquiries: 4787 1817. For more about David visit: www.davidscheel.com

Kindlehill School provides a contemporary Steiner based education for students from kindy, primary to junior high school. The school sits on the hill above the lake in Wentworth Falls, walking distance to the village and railway station. Its unique and beautiful buildings are a showcase for sustainable earth buildings, with everything from earth floors, local recycled timbers, straw bale, cob, to retaining walls made from recycled tyres.

The school strives to provide a learning environment that balances self motivated and collaborative learning. It develops artistic and practical skills so relevant to its ethos of contributing to creating communities that are fair and sustainable. It supports students to grow into resourceful and compassionate individuals who can go confidently into their future lives with broad based competencies.

On Saturday 10th of November, at our Spring Open Day, we warmly welcome visitors from the wider community to experience what makes Kindlehill School such a special place. Families can wander around the classes, chat with teachers, take a school tour and learn about Kindlehill’s approach to education. There will be activities and performances, a taste of the richness of the learning experiences at Kindlehill. The craft stall will sell treasures handcrafted by our parent craft group, and a wholesome vegetarian café run by our High School students will warm and delight.

LOO WITH A VIEW NEW PUBLIC TOILET OPENS IN HAZELBROOK

Hazelbrook residents, shoppers and visitors will enjoy the recent improvement to the town centre with the new public toilet facilities opened by Blue Mountains City Council on Monday 20 August 2012. On behalf of the Mayor, ward two Councillor, Chris Van der Kley, said, ‘The new toilet facilities will greatly improve the amenity of Hazelbrook. It is a modern design that includes an accessible toilet, a baby change table and it is easy to get to from the shopping precinct.” The new toilet block has a rainwater capture system that enables the re-use of water for toilet flushing and landscape watering and includes an on-line flushing system to save water. Also, the building panels of the new toilet block have an anti graffiti coating. Heather Connelly, Secretary, Hazelbrook Association, said, “The new toilet facilities are impressive in both appearance and its sustainable design. There are many shop keepers, commuters, locals and tourists that will be extremely pleased with the new toilet facilities. The Hazelbrook Association is proud to be assisting the local community to improve our much loved town.”

CROSSWORD ANSWER

KOROWAL SCHOOL PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS..

One of the more notable students at Hazelbrook’s Korowal School is Rowan Wkeng, originally from the Kaironk Valley in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Her father, Wkeng Asang, is an artist who lived and exhibited in Australia for several years until family circumstance forced his return to the family farm in PNG. Inge Riebe, a friend of Rowan’s father with whom they had lived whilst in Australia, took responsibility for Rowan’s future education. “Access to good schooling for village based children whose parents are subsistence farmers is extremely difficult,” Inge explains. First Rowan was enrolled in Port Moresby Grammar, but this did not fare well as her closest relatives to Moresby regularly were away for work. After that, said Inge, “I decided to look for opportunities to bring Rowan to complete her secondary education in Australia.” Korowal School offered her a spot at a generous cost and Rowan is now studying, amongst other subjects, Art like her father. “Many of the village families that I know well in PNG and with whom I also worked…have children who are very bright, start school do well and then do not have good access for further education, “ said Inge. East Timor, by contrast, has an education program

facilitated by former First Lady (and Australian) Kirsty Sword Gusmao, where bright students further their study in Australia. No such program exists for Papua New Guinea. “There is no sponsoring organisation. I am in the process of trying to set something up with an ex minister of education of PNG and the PNG high commissioner… With countries like PNG there is no easy fix, especially targeting disadvantaged village children.” Parties interested in helping Inge set up an action group for furthering the education of Papua New Guinea can reach Inge at [email protected]
