Cherie Dykes of Paddock to Pantry shows how the Upper Hunter Country stickers have been incorporated on the chalkboards.

Upper Hunter Country stickers save on feesThe simple act of adding an ‘Upper Hunter Country’ sticker to an A-frame chalkboard or the tables and chairs out on the footpath will save a business its 2017/18 annual footpath trading licence fees in the Upper Hunter Shire. At Paddock to Pantry in Scone, Upper Hunter Country stickers adorn both colourful chalkboards on the footpath and owner Steve Guihot is pleased he will be reimbursed his footpath trading fee.

Upper Hunter Shire Council is also offering fi nancial assistance to business owners to help revitalise streetscapes in towns across the Shire by way of a grant of up to $1,000 to refurbish shopfronts.

Big names and ideas for writers festival

Image: A view of the Yiqi International racing complex established by the China Horse Club at Ordos City, Inner Mongolia.

Newcomer Maurice is being touted as one of the best Northern Hemisphere racehorses ever used in Australia. Currently standing at Arrowfi eld, Maurice hails from American-bred giant of Japanese breeding Sunday Silence.Scone-bred horse Hales won the feature race, the Chinese Equine Cultural Festival (CECF) North Dakota Classic (2000m) at the futuristic Yiqi racecourse at Ordos in the northern China region known as Inner Mongolia on August 20. The 2009 foaled Haradasun gelding was bred by D C and Madelaine Kourea using Zarissa, a Zabeel mare disposed of in 2012 for $1000 and now deceased.

At 21 years-old Vinery Stud’s Testa Rossa continues to be a very reliable sire. In 2016-17 his progeny ran in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau won 126 races (seven stakes) and earned $5,220,912.

His successes during the year and in the fi rst month of 2017-18 have taken his lifetime statistics to 690 winners (a good strike rate of 73.7%) of 2291 races and over $77million.

STAR ATTRACTION: Australian author Rosalie Ham (pictured) who wrote ‘The Dressmaker’ will feature at this year’s Scone Writers Festival.

Come on Up to Scone to be stimulated and refreshed by making new connections at the annual Scone Literary Festival on 11 and 12 November. The festival boasts a stellar line up of big names worthy of being on the bill of any major city festival including Peter FitzSimons and our local literary treasure Phillip Adams.

Tom Thompson (publisher, collector and valuer) and local, Peter Haydon, will launch ‘To Beersheba 1917’, a book celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Australian Light Horse and the Charge at Beersheba. Another star attraction this year is Rosalie Ham, whose great book ‘The Dressmaker’ was made into a very successful movie.

New mayor in town for a day

Image: Mayor for a Day winner Olivia Collins with UHSC Mayor Wayne Bedggood.

Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Olivia Collins has declared Merriwa will receive a bowling alley, a motor bike track and a water slide at the pool in an effort to attract more people to town, after all, ‘more people means more money’.And the town very likely would if the St Joseph’s Merriwa year 6 student was Mayor for more than just a day.

Actual UHSC Mayor, Wayne Bedggood said Olivia proved herself a worthy winner of this year’s Mayor for a Day competition and certainly lacked ‘neither confi dence nor conviction’ when asked to read out what she would do for her community.

THE EMOJI MOVIE Rated (G) 91 mins

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression - except for Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak
