Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation
programme with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years
(2014 to 2020)
Coupling research to innovation – from reasearch to market,
all forms of innovation
Focus on societal challenges e.g food security, marine & maritime
r research, bioeconomy
Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in
all EU and beyond

Sustainable Food
Security
Blue Growth
Innovative, Sustainable
and Inclusive
Bioeconomy
• Sustainable food production systems
• Safe food and healthy diets and sustainable
consumption
• Global drivers of food security
• Sustainably exploiting the diversity of marine
life
• New offshore challenges
• Ocean observation technologies/systems
• Horizontal aspects, socio-economic
sciences, engagement with society,…
• Sustainable agriculture and forestry
• Sustainable and competitive bio-based
industries
• Cross-cutting actions covering all the
activities

Why a Blue Growth Focus Area
in H2020?
• New activity 2.5 in Horizon 2020 Specific programme – SC2 –
"cross-cutting marine and maritime research"
• Strategic approach to cross-cutting marine and maritime research to
underpin Integrated Maritime Policy and Blue Growth Strategy
• Catalyse efforts of different Societal Challenges or H2020 priorities
to address complex cross-cutting marine and maritime research
questions that could not be tackled by a single Societal Challenge
• Take stock of and go further the FP7 experience "The Ocean of
Tomorrow" (31 projects, 195M€) on cross-thematic marine and
maritime research

maximising synergies with
regional initiatives (BONUS),
activities funded at national
level (JPI OCEAN/ ERANETs)
International Cooperation
13 www.kpk.gov.pl
International cooperation: The Transatlantic Ocean Research Alliance
Launched in May 2013 (Galway Statement) under Irish Presidency with
Commissioners Geoghegan-Quinn & Damanaki
Goal: To better understand the Atlantic Ocean and to promote the sustainable
management of its resources. The work will also study the interplay of the Atlantic
Ocean with the Arctic Ocean, particularly with regards to climate change.
In WP 2014-2015: Several topics are identified as relevant for the Galway
Statement.

The Grant Cycle
Two year work programmes announce the specific areas
that will be funded by Horizon 2020.
Each call gives more precise information on the questions
that the Commission would like you to address in your
proposals.
If you wish to respond to a call, you must submit a proposal
before the deadline. All proposals are submitted online.
Many calls require a team of at least three partners. Use
the partner search options.
Once the deadline has passed, all proposals are evaluated
by a panel of independent specialists in their fields.
Once a proposal passes the evaluation stage (five months’
duration), applicants are informed about the outcome. The
European Commission then draws up a grant agreement
with each participant.
