Hello everyone – welcome to the 2013 to 2014 Season and the September issue of the “Blue & Gold”. Our AGM was held in July and we now have a new Board of Directors (BOD) already fully engaged with pre- season activities and preparations for the year ahead. With regards to the BOD, we have a great team of people in the various roles and positions and with all key positions filled, we are in better shape than the same time last season. During the “Off Season” or winter break, we had teams from North Cronulla represent and compete at the NSW State and Australian IRB Titles and Club Members represent State IRB Teams and the NSW and Australian Pool Rescue Championships with – great success. Congratulations to all Members on your results and representing the “Blue and Gold” at these events. Over the last 12 months, we have been working to our Club Management Plan 2012 – 2015 and the key functional areas of: 1. Lifesaving and Patrols 2. Training and Education 3. Competition (Surf Sports) 4. Business and Administration 5. Member Services 6. Community. These six areas are critical to the successful running and management of our Club and this is an ever changing and dynamic operation, with our Directors working on implementing their plans for the season and developing new plans as required to meeting the obligations of SLSNSW and SLSA. Our Lifesaving and Patrol function, led by Jamie Primmer, Darren Thorne and Kane Hughes are now working on preparation for the Annual Sydney Branch Gear Inspection and developing the Patrol Roster for the season based on the recently signed SLSNS Patrol Service Agreements for the next three years. Training and Education is in full swing, with Jason Gollan and his team already training SRC and Bronze Squads at the Club during the week and on weekends. Other important activities include a Committee working on our Club Constitution to review, update and rewrite to reflect changes in our day-to-day operation, Club job position and changes in regulations for Branch, State and National Surf Lifesaving levels. This task is gaining momentum and there will be a draft constitution for BOD review later this year and to be ratified by the Club Membership in 2014. 87th Interclub 2013What a fantastic display of Club support and camaraderieby our North Cronulla Members – hosting the 87th AnnualInterclub Carnival on the weekend 23-24 April, backed upby fantastic conditions, with a small swell and sunnyskies – the two days turned out a great success.

Our Competitors performed magnificently withunbelievable results across all disciplines and we thankthem all for their efforts, especially those that had toback-up in many events.

To those that put their body on the line for the “Blue &Gold” by “risking life and injury” in the Masters Events –your performance will bring the crowds back to theInterclub and be spoken about for years to come!!

Who will ever forget fast finishing Kevin Macnamara inthe Masters Relay – clutching at his hamstring with fivemetres to finish – but still dragging himself over the line toclaim second place, then collapsing on the sand in painand jubilation! Inspirational!!

The post-carnival Presentation of the Shields andPointscore in the Ballroom, produced laughter and tearswith North Cronulla taking out the inaugural “Harry BrownRescue Shield”. I’m sure Harry is a very proud and happyman.

A big thank you to all the people that helped make theday a success – Julie H, Baz, Browny, Martin, Ron andhis Officials, Beach set up and take down, Announcers,Patrol Members, IRB, Committee, “Bursty” from Branch,Larry, Frank and everyone else that helped on the day.

It was a cold Saturday morning and seven families turnedup bleary eyed, ready for the NSW Pool RescueChampionships at Woy Woy.

With only a small, relatively inexperienced Team takingon the much bigger Clubs from Terrigal and the Bate Bayarea – we were ready to hit the Pool.

The first event of the weekend was the Obstacle Race, where Abbey Pugh came third to claim the first Medal ofthe weekend.

This was quickly followed by Lachie Moyle with secondplace and Jett Garland winning his Age Group – and hisfirst Gold Medal.

The next event was the widely feared 50m ManikinCarry, where both Lachie Moyle and Ethan Garlandbrought home Silver in their respective Age Groups.

Both Nikki Glasson and Cheyne-Leigh Wardropcontested their events – unfortunately both weredisqualified, possibly for laughing?

This was followed by the 50m Brick Carry for the Under-12s and Under-13s. After a nervous start, Maddy Moylehad a fantastic race – securing ninth place in a hot field.

Jett Garland sprang from the blocks to win a veryexciting race – claiming his second Gold Medal for theday.

The 100m Manikin Tow With Fins was the final event ofthe day.

After a nail biting transition, Lachie had a fantastic swimto claim his first Gold for the Carnival.

Abbey had another great race to secure second, whileboth Nikki and Cheyne-Leigh managed sixth places afterfantastic races.

The stand-out of this event had to be Ethan who, theweek before, was struggling with this event and after manyextra hours in the pool, had the race of his life – claimingGold!

We ended the first day in equal sixth place in the ClubPointscore, beating many of the other much betterrepresented Clubs, particularly our fellow Bate Bay Clubs.

Sunday began with more success, with Abbey andCheyne-Leigh claiming Silver in theLine Throw Event.Lachie had a fantastic throw to Ethan, enabling them towin the Gold by a good margin.

We next saw Abbey and Lachie taking on the toughestevent – the Super Lifesaver.

Abbey went out hard, with a strong finish to claim Silverin a very close race. Lachie had a great race too, alsogaining Silver.

Jett Garland.

The final Championship Event for the weekend was the50m Freestyle With Fins.

This is an extremely quick event, with mostCompetitors not surfacing until they touch the wall.

All of the kids had a great race – with Lachie claimingthird place, Cheyne-Leigh claiming fourth place and bothNikki and Maddy claiming fifth places.

Jett had been conserving his energy all day, and wasclearly determined to do well. He had a blinder, winning histhird Gold for the weekend.

As a Club, we ended up eighth in the pointscore with101 points.

This is a phenomenal effort considering we only hadseven Competitors competing against much bigger andmore experienced Clubs.

It’s great to see so many new Competitors – especiallythe younger kids from Nippers, who can use this Carnivalas a stepping-stone into the Senior Club and experience aSenior Carnival.

Hopefully, we will be able to continue to grow this Teamnext season.

The Team Events really are a lot of fun and it would begreat to have some Teams next year.

These fantastic results could not have been achievedwithout the help of Aaron Markey, Kyle O’Brien and PeterMoyle.

Both Aaron and Kyle are new to the Club and willinglyvolunteered to share their expertise and knowledge.

I really appreciate their help – and hope to see themback next year. Peter was at every Training Session, setting Manikins and helping out behind the scenes.

Finally, Abbey and Ethan went to Brisbane for theNational Pool Rescue Championships on 16th-18th ofAugust. Abbey got a Bronze Medal in the Women’s 14-YO100 LC Metre Manikin Tow with Fins. Ethan also got aBronze Medal in the Men’s 13 YO 100 LC Metre ManikinTow With Fins.

Surfboat CaptainWelcome! For those who don’t know me I’d like tointroduce myself. My name is Michael Bofinger, alsoknown as “Bof”. I have been a Member of this great Clubfor 30+ years and I have been a North Cronulla Rower for24 of those.

I am very passionate about this Club and I am evenmore passionate about the Boat Section. For the past sixyears I have been involved with my children in Nipper’sand the Junior Board and Ski Section, but now I am happyto return to a Section of the Club, where I feel most athome.

Over the years, I have been led by several longstanding, experienced and inspirational Boat Captains andI know I have huge shoes to fill. I only hope I can pass onsome of the knowledge that I have gained from being apart of this Section and under the guidance of these wiseVeteran Rowers and Sweeps. I’d also like to acknowledgethe hard work and dedication of Liam over the past twoyears and I’d like to congratulate him on the success atlast season’s Australian Titles.

I thank those who have encouraged and persuaded meto finally put my hand up to lead our Section into this up-and-coming season. I feel heartened by the willingness ofmany of you who have stood up to support and drive ourSection as a Leadership Team.Special mention must go to:Adam Purdie – Vice-Boat CaptainDavid Gregson – ManagerDean “Wokeye” Bartlett – Assistant ManagerBen Smollett – Head of FinanceMatt Bell – Head of SponsorshipLinda Hawkins – Ladies Crew Representative andSponsorship. We are also fortunate to have at our disposal theexpertise of:Donny Workman (Renown Boat Coach and legendary pastBoat Captain)Terry “Dog” Dowers – Super Coach & North Cronulla’sCoach of the Year 2013 SeasonTom Chapman – Trainer, Program setter and 6pm Thursdayevenings Boxing and Fitness Trainer – a great session – allwelcome to attendCorey Bocking – Strength and Conditioning CoachBaz Schuetrumpf – In charge of the VeteransSweeps – The two best Sweeps in Australia – “Yappy” and“Trax” and our up-and-coming Sweeps – Adam Purdie,Mick Hawkins, “Hawkeye” and Jason.Assistants, trainers/ sweeps -Aunty Jack, Cashy, GeoffStreater, Barney Ferguson, Paul Bouffler, Roger Mentha,Baz and myself.

My role as I see it, is to work with the BoatiesLeadership Team, you – the Rowers, Sweeps, Sponsorsand our Club – to build our Section from strength tostrength to make it competitive – but above all, enjoyable!

In order to do this, we all need to work as a Team bysupporting, encouraging, mentoring and sharing ourequipment and talents!

In discussion with many Rowers, we believe thisSection must now continue the building and recruitingphase – starting in our Junior Section and Women’sDivision. Acquiring craft is also a priority.

I would also love to see the boat section supportingother sections in the club as we are one Club! All Rowers are encouraged to:1. Consider their level of commitment for the Season

ahead – at whatever capacity that may be – the SocialCrews are always welcome.

2. Ensure your Membership Fees are up to date!3. Establish their Crews. Nominate a “Captain” to drive and

communicate with and for the Crew. This person will bein charge of “fines”! They will also act and respond tocorrespondence shared by the Leadership Team regard-ing Training, Social, Fundraising etc.

4. Have a formal health and heart check before theseason commences. Especially if you are over 40!

5. Get fit , have fun – be as competitive as the surf allows.SponsorsWe are very grateful to have the support of our Sponsors.

Without them we would not have a boat section.
