We have filed away, with great satisfaction and pride, the recognition that DFI (Deep

Foundation Institute) awarded the Chairman of the Trevi Group, Davide Trevisani, for

having “made a significant contribution to the research and design of innovative

equipment for deep foundations”. A prize to the person, but also to Soilmec that,

since 1969, the year of its foundation, has always focused on research and innovation,

characterizing itself as a pioneer in the foundation market worldwide.

True to our nature, we are preparing to present some important news and updates with

regard to our range of products on the occasion of the next Bauma Exhibition in Munich.

The first novelty is about the division of large diameter pile rigs into three new categories:

Evolution, Advanced and High technology that we have developed in order to meet the various customers’ needs.

At Bauma, we will launch “BLUE”, the new generation of hydraulic drills for large diameter piles, that is,

SR-45, SR-75, SR-95, SR-125 and SR-145. Following the experience and the success of the first generation, the new

SR rigs are designed to enhance productivity, operational flexibility and also the comfort and safety of the operator.

I would like to recommend you a couple of interesting innovations in the range of Heavy Duty Cranes: in fact, Soilmec

has developed two new crawler cranes at work cycle, the SC-120 HD and the SC-50 HD.

Finally, I would also like to emphasize another important milestone: the construction of the 150th unit in the UAE,

which confirms our leadership in the area.

Tailored rigs to Iraqi water wells

Drillmec has recently completed a large contract for the supply of ten rigs and related

drilling equipment to the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture. The rigs, 30 tons and 45 tons

capacity, have been manufactured in the new Drillmec factory located near Parma,

in Italy, whose characteristics have permitted to manufacture the rigs within the

contractual delivery times.

Some of the client’s requirements have brought fit-for-purpose solutions. For example,

the mast has been re-designed, allowing the simultaneous installation of the carousel

charger and the sliding-aside and tilting top drive: all characteristics facilitating

the handling of tubular in several/variable configurations. In addition, a rough and

heavy-duty driller cabin was introduced, in order to operate the rig in safe and more

comfortable way.

Two Iveco deck-mounted engines, fully tropicalised for hard climate conditions, are

powering the hydraulic system and the air compressor. The 10” x 7.1/2” duplex Drillmec

mud pump and the 25 bar air compressor, allow rotary drilling with direct or reverse

circulation of mud and/or air, and DTH drilling.

This large contract also includes training of the Iraqi technicians in Italy, and technical

assistance on site. The activity in Iraq is assured by Drillmec Iraqi partner, collaborating

with Drillmec for more than 15 years, not only in the water-well market, but also in civil

engineering and oil & gas sectors.

Soilmec at BAUMA 2016 will introduce several key innovations and range upgrades.

New “BLUE” generation SR drilling rigs

Bauma will be the platform for the exhibition of the new “BLUE” generation

SR-45, SR-75, SR-95, SR-125 and SR-145 hydraulic drilling rigs for large

diameter piles. Based on the experience and success of the first generation, the new

SR rigs have been designed to improve their productivity and operating flexibility to an

ever higher degree, in addition to operator comfort and safety.

The new rigs are installed with new Tier 4 Diesel engines and are fitted with more

powerful and lightweight rotaries with torque increased of more than 20% and

pull up of more than 30%.

The new SR line generation has also seen a reduction in weight but an improvement

in performance thanks to the use of high-strength steels and a new antenna design

with standardized section.

The new “BLUE” SR rigs generation come with new larger cabs, with improved

comfort and visibility and, in particular, equipped with a new DMS system (Drilling Mate

System) to allow control of all the operating parameters.

SM drilling rigs for micropiles and anchoring

The new SM drilling rigs are the outcome of Soilmec expertise and Puntel

engineering, aimed at increasing performance, safety and innovation.

possible to work in various positions and to perform lateral movements in total safety.

Thanks to an innovative kinematic mechanism, the machines can also operate parallel

to the tracks.

Furthermore, the new models will be suited for an extremely varied range of working

applications and technologies since they offer a wide range of rotary heads, clamp/joint

breakers and modular antennas with varying travel of the rotary heads.

Soilmec has improved safety for the operator and for all those working in

proximity to the drilling rig. These improvements have been achieved by carefully

studying all potential hazards, adopting the most sophisticated safety systems and equipping

the machines with latest generation remote controls for total control even at a distance.

Soilmec cranes

At the Bauma 2016, Soilmec presents two new models of duty cycle crawler cranes, the

SC-120 HD and the SC-50 HD, which complete the development of the new product

range started on the previous Bauma edition.

These models combine heavy-duty performances with the chance to be easily

configured in several working configurations: diaphragm wall grab, hydraulic

rotary, pile driving, dragline, clamshell, dynamic compaction, casing oscillator, etc.

All models of the SC range install the-state-of-the-art operator cabin, the Soilmec

H-Cab, with high comfort and ergonomics for the operator, together with the advance

generation of DMS control system, monitoring the state of the machine and offering

a dedicated software package for each technology.

Finally, the SC crawler cranes are available in both Tier 4 and Tier 3 engine versions and

they offer all necessary safety features to guarantee the safe use and the maintenance

of the machine.

SR-45The Soilmec LHR quick conversion kit is specially designed for works in low space

condition, under the electric power lines or bridges, as well as existing structures. Drill

rigs equipped with Low-Head-Room attachments provide a safe work environment

and at less cost. Soilmec has developed low-headroom conversion kit that can be

mounted on the new SR-45 ADV for large diameters and deep piles. The SR-45 ADV

in LHR version is a compact drilling rig easy to assemble, move and reassemble,

which is designed especially for working in limited headroom conditions. Thanks to

the new Soilmec concept design, the rig has extremely high performance in cased

or uncased bored piles technology and can be optionally configured in continuous

SR-75The SR-75 is Soilmec’s top-performing model in our new blue ADVANCED product

line. For the past two years, SR-75s have been working at jobsites around the

world, field-proving the quality of design and excellent performance onsite.

At Bauma, the Soilmec SR-75 will be set up in a segmental casing large-diameter

piling (LDP) configuration. This piling system has been used extensively at several

job sites in Europe with excellent results, thanks to the SR-75’s strong crowd

SC-50 HDAt Bauma 2016, Soilmec introduce the new SC-50 HD, the smallest model of its heavy

duty crawler cranes. The SC-50 HD, despite the size, is a real multifunctional crane

designed with some target arrangements aimed to increase quality and performances.

The maximum lifting capacity is 50 tons with a working radius of 3.6 m, and the boom

length can reach 40 m.

The 15 t free fall winches allow to work in several working configurations

(crane, mechanical grab, hydtaulic vibrator, clamshell, casing oscillator,

chisel, etc.), and this become the SC-50 HD suitable for a large range of

job sites.

Finally, the “Easy DMS” installed in the crane checks the main machine

parameters and, supported by a modem, can transmit all machine

warnings to a DMS Control Center.

SC-120 HDAt the Bauma 2016, Soilmec presents the new SC-120 HD, a duty cycle crawler

crane equipped with the hydraulic rotary SA-40 for bored piles construction.

The SC-120 HD is the successor of the proven SC-120, and compared with this

last, it improves the overall performances, thanks to a new power pack, the use

of closed circuit pumps and the advance generation of DMS control system, which

monitors the state of the machine and offers a dedicated software package for

each technology. The SC-120 HD frame shows a robust design necessary for HD

operations, and, at the same time, can be easily transported, with a transport

weight under 48 t and a transport width at 3.5 m. A dedicated Power Module

Control System ensures that diesel engine and hydraulic pumps work at their

most efficient and productive levels. As all SC series, the SC-120 HD installs the

Soilmec H-Cab, the most innovative cabin in the duty cycle crane market in

SM-22 The new SM-22 is an evolution of the historic PSM-1350 and SM-20 models that

overall have sold more than 300 units worldwide, and have been completely

redesigned to ensure high efficiency and productivity levels on site together with

the highest safety standards.

It can be easily configured in different single rotary fittings, double rotary, top-

hammer and vibro-rotary to carry out consolidation, micropiles and anchors with

different drilling technologies, direct circulation, reverse circulation, DTH, CFA,

jet grouting.

Different types of masts with both cylinder and gearbox push - pull systems are

available and stroke length ranging from 4,400 mm to 10,200 mm. The Cummins

of the brand new G33 multipurpose drilling rig. The G33 multipurpose is an innovative

product designed for rotary drilling with direct and reverse mud circulation, water/air

The Trevi Group has always been at the forefront in the field of foundation

engineering. Technological innovation, the development of new techniques and

the design of increasingly efficient equipment have been, since the birth of

Pali Trevisani, in 1957, the guidelines of a development which sees the Group

companies now present in five continents with over 7,500 employees.

Technological innovation in the Trevi Group is always combined with the philosophy

of “doing”; the constant willingness to face with courage and confidence all the

challenges that the subsoil presents every time you need to perform a perforation or

a deep excavation. Propensity supported by the acquired skills with the experience

of many projects brought to fruition.

This tendency to always look ahead means that often, for insiders, for “Specialists”,

all what has been achieved will become the norm, the standard automatically. This

normality is also a wealth of knowledge and experiences to be transmitted to those

The 2016 edition of Bauma, one of the most important fairs in our industry, seemed to be

the best stage to officially present this volume, anticipating a year an important moment

in which the age of 60 years of the Trevi Group.

SM-5E in Mosul Dam

The micro drilling rig SM-5 that Soilmec is going to exhibit at next Bauma will be used by Trevi in its electrical version SM-5E for the interesting jobsite at Mosul Dam

The intervention consist on a series of grout injection to consolidate the Dam’s

bottom foundation, up to 130 m deep, to improve its the water resistance.

The job site characteristic is very interesting, the SM-5E will work in very

confined space, located inside the 3 km long pre-existing tunnel only 2 m high

and 3 m wide with constant and heavy leakage of water. Their need is to work

with the lowest exhaust emission possible, with a small but powerful rig.

The SM-5E is designed to reach flexibility in kinematic mechanism, minimum

operating costs and high performance. In order to operate in buildings and

tunnelling applications Soilmec has developed an electric engine version which

has a rated power of 75 kW reducing the exhausted gas emissions. The wide

range of movements is provided by two slew rings the first at the base machine

allows rotations of +/- 90° which permit drilling over the side of the crawlers,

while the second on mast gives +/- 180° to achieve radial drilling. In addition the

rig is provided with ground stabilisers, 200 mm telescopic zoom stroke, modular

mast on a counter-slide. The SM-5E can be radio-controlled reducing costs and

time during operation, in either the drilling or in kinematic mechanisms phase.

Once again the synergy between the Trevi great experience and the Soilmec

technology will be the key to success.

Building offshore foundations for the new Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway

in Kuwait City, Kuwait, is the latest in a long line of complex marine projects successfully

constructed by the Trevi Group.

This project entails the construction of a magnificent 37-km-long (23-mile) bridge

and causeway across the Bay of Kuwait to link Kuwait City and the less-densely-

populated Subiya area.

Trevi Foundations Kuwait Co.W.L.L. (part of the Trevi Group) is building 760 of the

1,200 foundation piles for the causeway. The offshore piles are being installed from

an anchored barge; additional ships are being used to transport personnel, equipment,

and supplies to the sites and to remove excavated debris. The complex project is also

challenged in the summer by extreme heat up to 50 °C (120 °F) with frequent dust and

wind storms, in the winter by cool temperatures with minimal visibility due to heavy

fog, and throughout the year by strong wave and tidal variations.

Due to soil conditions, bored pile technology was chosen for both the onshore and

offshore foundations. The piles have a diameter of 2,500 mm (98 in) onshore and

3,000 mm (118 in) offshore, with depths varying from 30 to 84 m (98 to 276 ft).

Trevi Foundations Kuwait is constructing the onshore piles with a Soilmec SR-100 and

R-930 (equivalent to the newer SR-90) drilling rigs. They are installing the offshore

piles with a Soilmec SC-120HD crane fitted with a Soilmec SA-40 hydraulic rotary head

learned from Trevi’s on-site construction experience, bringing the most cutting edge

technological upgrades to solve ever-evolving foundation drilling challenges. Trevi

Foundations Kuwait is using specialized methods and technologies to meet the unique

challenges of onshore and offshore pile construction for the causeway in Kuwait City.

For instance, it’s critical they avoid polluting the water in the bay. So excavation debris

is discharged directly into watertight caissons and the overflow of the polymer slurry

used to stabilize the boreholes is caught in a tank below. Casting piles deep into water

is also a challenging, delicate process that must be performed without interruption

at the right speed to ensure the polymer slurry rises properly as it is displaced by the

concrete. Trevi Foundations Kuwait is avoiding interruptions in the casting process by

using two barges, each with a concrete mixing plant and a pump with a spraying arm

long enough to reach the piles.

Trevi Foundations Kuwait is relying on their ingenuity, experience, and Soilmec

equipment to successfully build foundations for yet another complex marine project.

So it’s no surprise that they’ve been selected as one of the top marine construction

The SR-95 in addition to a full jet grouting package was

ordered by Hanssen in Perth for the foundation works to

construct a 5 level basement at the site of the Aurelia

residential project in South Perth near the banks of

the Swan River.

The geology consists of fine silty sands with bands of clay

and a high water table. The first phase of the project was

to perform a grouting plug at 33 m – 30 m depth from

ground level using two Soilmec SM-28 in single pass and

one SM-20 with 2x6 m rod changes. Soilmec also supplied

the grout batching station and high pressure pumps.

Perimeter columns from 33 m – 25 m depth were also

installed in proximity of the CSP piles.

CSP production has commenced in January 2016 where

360 piles are to be installed. For this challenging project

the Soilmec SR-95 with casing diameter 830 mm and CFA

auger diameter 740 mm were chosen. For the primary

piles casing and CFA auger depth is 20 m and for the

secondaries casing 20 m and CFA auger to 26.5 m depth.

Completion of the foundation works and excavation in

order to start above ground construction is expected by

middle 2016.

Canam Group from New Zealand has recently started the construction of two 15-

stories towers for Residential Living in Alexandria Park, 15 minutes South of Auckland.

CLL was the Piling Company contracted by Canam Group to build the challenging

foundation project. The time allowed for the ground works was limited, due to fast

delivery required by the Main Contractor.

With rock compressive strengths ranging from 30 to 80 MPa, an extraordinary

technology was required in order to complete the project in time.

CLL used the newest Drilling Rig from Soilmec, the SR-45. The rig was equipped in

Down the Hole Hammer (DTHH) technology, performing diameter 600 mm and 800

mm foundation piles at depths ranging from 12 to 15 m.

In order to power the DTHH, five compressors were required, delivering

approximately,5000 cfm at 200 psi. The whole DTHH assembly weight was about 6

tons and was installed with the help of the partial CFA kit from Soilmec Australia.

This setup allows for the DTHH to rotate at very low rpm, maximising the penetration

rate with an average of approx. 1’ 20’’ per meter achieved. Use of the DTHH was

definitely the most efficient solution compared to other traditional drilling methods that

allowed our customer to deliver the project in time.

Thanks to the Soilmec SR-45’s versatility and stability, the conversion from LDP/Kelly

Bar Version to DTHH took approximately two days to setup, including the connection

pipes installation on the side of the rig.

On 11th September, 2015, a tunnel shaft drilled in Sydney’s north with a Soilmec SR-

45 rig marks the beginning of excavation work for the NorthConnex. The North South

Wales (NSW) and Federal Governments, Transurban and the M7 Westlink Shareholders

(the project sponsors) will build, operate and maintain a tolled motorway linking the

M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills –

called NorthConnex. The 9 km tunnel motorway includes interchanges to the north and

south to accommodate connections at either end of the project. When complete, it will

link Sydney’s north to the Orbital network and form part of the National Highway route.

As part of the wider Sydney road network, NorthConnex provides a direct connection

from north to western and southern roads – keeping Sydney and the NSW economy

moving. The link between the M1 and M2 is recognised in the NSW Government’s

State Infrastructure Strategy and NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan as important

infrastructure for freight traffic and the wider connectivity within NSW to reduce

congestion and improve traffic flow along Pennant Hills Road.

The paramount factor that enables a business to succeed, especially in our field, is

the ability to support the product. In this case, drilling rigs. Having the ability to keep

a considerable stock of critical spare parts locally, employing and constantly training

highly skilled technicians, proved to be one of the key drivers for our business. I get

asked frequently by different clients which OEM do I think manufactures the best

drilling rigs on the market. My answer will always be “the manufacturer that has the

best support, the manufacturer that keeps the biggest amount of spare parts in stock

and obviously, who employs very skilled technicians.”

The end of the commissioning was celebrated with an event which saw the presence

of leaders from both Enel and Drillmec at the yard located in Castel Nuovo Val di

Cecina, province of Pisa (Italy).

The HH-300 (second rig supplied to EGP) allows to overcome the operating limits

of conventional drilling systems in the geothermal sector, such as the handling

system of the drill pipes, transportation challenges, high visual and sound impact

and a substructure which is not suitable for well-heads usually adopted in the

aforementioned industry.

The skidding system allows the rig to move in operating conditions up to 24 m in

longitudinal direction; a clever system of correction is installed to better adapt to

the configuration of the well-heads.However, the high automation reached with

the HH-300 is the real innovation: the rig is engineered and built to provide a fully

automatic moving of drill pipes from the vertical container rods to the mouse hole,

managed by the PLC. All of this for the operator’s safety and benefit.

“Safety has always been the flagship of hydraulic rigs – said Cesare Trevisani,

Vice President of Trevi Finanziaria Industriale –, and with this fully automated

rig we have reached high efficiency without compromising operational needs and

performance”.

Also EGP is fully satisfied: it has just added to its fleet a rig with a system with high

operational capabilities and is getting ready for new international challenges.

Sergio Mattarella, the Italian President, visited Indonesia last November 2015 to explore the potential increase of bilateral trade and investment

The visit has been the first of an Italian Head of State in Indonesia where a bilateral

trade had a worth US $ 3.2 billion in 2014 and there are still many opportunities to

improve. During the visit several agreements were signed, three of them by Stefano

Angeli, the Sales Vice President of Drillmec, and Kris Wiluan, the Chairman of PT Citra

Tubindo Engineering.

Below a brief summary of the agreements:

• A MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Drillmec and CTE for the

manufacturing of on-shore and off-shore drilling rigs. The 40 % of the equipment will

be imported from Italy, while the 60% manufactured in CTE Batam facilities, Indonesia.

Drillmec will also supply the engineering support. The sale of 10 rigs is forecasted to be

manufactured in the next five years;

• A letter of intent by Drillmec to CTE to place an order for two Substructures for DES

(Drilling Equipment Set) and related rig up in Batam Yard;

• A contract of sale by CTE to Drillmec for the supply of 1500 HP rig components. The

rig will be completed in Batam Yard.

These three agreements represent the basis for building a possible and future joint

venture between the two xompanies.

Trevi have been represented by its Area Manager, Pierluigi Miconi, who took also part of

the Italian delegation and had several interesting meeting with Italian and Indonesian

main Contractors: the Indonesian market looks very promising to Trevi with planned

heavy investments in infrastructures: 1,000 km of motorway, 3,000 km of railways, 65

dams, several ports.

The first Drillmec rig will be commissioned and will

start the drilling campaign in the Congo Republic by

not later than the end of 2015. The job site includes

the MR8000 drilling rig, two Drillmec mud pumps

9T1000, Drillmec mud system, Drillmec hydraulic top

drive HTD250C. Drillmec also supplied the power

generator set. The rig owner is Société de Forages

Pétroliers (SFP), which is drilling onshore in the

Kundji field where SNPC is the operator. Drillmec

after sales support technicians are working on site

at the commissioning/start-up operations together

with SFP crew.

With Drillmec HH-300 rig, SOCAR-AQS has completed the works on construction

of first well on platform #20, successfully, ahead of schedule, without any incidents

and without harming the environment. SOCAR has put into operation of its customer

Azneft Production Unit, a horizontal well at the West Absheron deposit, an offshore

natural gas field in the Caspian Sea. The well #22 was drilled from the sea platform

#20. The daily well output is 20 tons of oil and the reserves of the West Absheron

deposit are assessed at 10 mln
