BLOWING THE WHISTLE FOR LIONISM
Transcript of BLOWING THE WHISTLE FOR LIONISM
We are back from International Convention and I am blowing my whistle. Which way will we go? What will we do?
As we begin a new year in Lionism, let me first thank you, the Lions of District 22-D, for electing me as your District Governor. Being your Governor is indeed an honor and a privilege, and I’m looking forward to working with all of you through the many activities and challenges that lie ahead. I would also like to thank Immediate Past District Governor Mary Lee Phillips for all her hard work and time that she put into making her year - and our district - a success. She accomplished much and we are a better district for it. And….to the Past District Governors for your guidance and support. I could not have made it this far without you.
Our new International President, Joseph Preston, has asked that we serve this year with PRIDE; not by being boastful, but by building our communities, providing meaningful service, and helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This is the key to success, not just for this year, but for many years to come.
This is also the year of pulling together and working together – as a team. This means helping each other and putting aside personal feelings for one another at a moment’s notice. Let’s help our weak clubs become stronger and to grow in membership; a purpose that rises above and beyond our own selves.
As I close out my first article, let me just say: Have a fantastic year and do not forget to have FUN – whether you are conducting business or going about making your community a better place in which to live. Encourage your club to engage friends, family, and community members to participate in your projects. This will give them the opportunity to learn first-hand what we do, the camaraderie we share, and to understand what our motto “We Serve” is all about.
Cheryl Jones, District Governor

Cruise To Service
Hello Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leo’s,
To begin with I would like to say congratulations to IPDG Mary Lee for a successful year.
As we begin our new Lions year 2014-2015 with District Governor Cheryl Jones, I am ready to gear up for a new ride blowing that whistle. I am prepared to help and support our new District Governor with plans to keep moving our district forward.
As your new First Vice District Governor, I have received my invitation for the Leader Dog Conference and Visit. Lion Brenda and I are all registered and our airline is booked for the first week in August. We are excited to see and share this experience that everyone has told us about. I hope everyone is having a great summer with family and friends. The magic word there is family. I know the Lions of MD22-D are working in their communities and doing fundraising projects during the summer but remember to have fun.
We still need to remember the importance of membership. In order to keep our District in good standing we need to continue asking that important question, would you like to be a Lion?
Thanks for letting me serve this great organization.
Yours in Lionism,
James R. Coverdale
First Vice District Governor
The Power of Service
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Home Club, the Claymont Lions Club, for support-ing me this year as I sought the office of 2VDG. As I visited the clubs in 22D I realized what a great team this District is. We represent the mission of Lions each day with service to our respec-tive service areas. I would also like to take this time to thank each club in the District for their warm reception as I introduced myself as the candidate for 2VDG. I look forward to working with DG Cheryl and FVDG Jim and all the members of 22D as we embark on a new Lion Year.
Believe in the Power of Service to Others.
I do and I know you do as well.
2VDG Glenn Williams

Centennial Service Challenge AUGUST – MEMBERSHIP FOCUS: STUDENTS AND LEO LIONS
Engage youth to benefit 25 million people and be part of the Centennial Service Challenge!
During August, we invite you and your club to join Lions around the world in recognizing
the power of youth involvement. Demonstrate your commitment to youth development by
planning activities in connection with United Nations International Youth Day, recognized
each August. Or, organize projects throughout the month that engage and mobilize youth
while helping communities.

Capitol City Lions
Capitol City Lions completed their June 14th Road Clean-up by collecting 7 bags of trash. Pictured from left to right are: Joe Zager, Lion James Cayz, Lion Bill Vidrine, Lion Mel Nace, and Lion Warren Fairess. Lion Denise Cayz also participated and took the photograph.
We collected 237 pairs of used eyeglasses for recycling during June. This brings our total for July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 to 2,335.
Millsboro Lions
The totals for SIGHT TEAM for 2013-14, from Sight Chairperson Jan McCarty, were 75 individuals referred - we will incur no charges for 18 of those. Total support from our club was $6,308.
Three club members, Lions David, Mitch, KL Mary Lee, and one guest, enjoyed the afternoon of fellowship and food; and then an exciting game wherein the Gold (southern) team defeated the Blue team 28-21. And every person (literally hundreds) involved with DRFC (Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with intellectual disabilities) was recognized during the event!
On a sad note- we were sorry to lose one of our cooks for the Fritter Shack , and board member
Lion Ken Sutton, who passed away in June. Our prayers go to Sherry and the family.
Newark Lions
Mission Accomplished!!! With everyone’s help and with great work by Lions Fred and Marilyn Gleber, our annual fundraiser was a wonderful success. We increased this year’s prize to $300.00 thanks to an additional donation from Lion Marilyn. Lion Marilyn’s grandson’s business, Unique Image, contributed the cost of the tickets. We netted over $1,200.00 for our efforts. This will enable us to continue to help the less fortunate in our community. This would not have been possible without the help of some former members who are willing to serve when they have the opportunity as well as friends and even students of some of our members. Thank you all.
Congratulations to Tom Smith, who was the lucky winner of our raffle.

Lord Baltimore Lions
On June 10th, three Lord Baltimore Lions - Mary Richer, Janet Bauer and Jack Bauer, went to John M. Clayton School to provide pizza and punch as a small reward for students who had earned straight “A’s” for the fourth marking period. This project was started through the dedicated efforts of Guidance Counselor Jan Bomhardt and as a result of our Community Needs Assessment done as part of our Club Excellence Process Project. Pictured are some of the happy pizza eaters. The club is looking forward to continuing this project next year.
