Bloody Scotland - A Weekend to Die ForBloody Scotland arrived with a bang on the festival circuit in 2012, attracting international and UK stars, as well as showcasing new and emerging home grown Scottish talent. Alex dreamed that when crime writers were asked where they were going in September, their reply would be ‘Bloody Scotland’. Thus the name was coined, and all eyes turned to Stirling, mid September. Welcome to Bloody Scotland, the dedicated crime writing festival north of the border. Whether you love historical crime, spy thrillers, noir, cosy mystery, police procedurals, true crime, or if you’re an aspiring crime novelist, we have events waiting for you. At our debut festival we focused on Scottish crime writing but this year we cast our net wide: Lee Child arrives from the States, and Jo Nesbø leads a dazzling array of Nordic writers, including Mons Kallentoft and newest Scandinavian sensation Arne Dahl. Colin Bateman and Eoin Colfer reveal why the Irish are born storytellers, and Mark Billingham rounds up a posse of fabulous writers from south of the border. But Scottish crime writing stays at the heart of the festival, with great names like Val McDermid, Stuart MacBride, William McIlvanney, Louise Welsh and Denise Mina. And we showcase the best of the newest talent in our Fresh Blood event.

We take a close look at the way forensics have transformed police investigation, and consequently modern crime fiction. Be your own forensic scientist - we’re setting up a crime scene for you to use the latest technology to solve a murder. But we also look back at eras of crime writing pre-fingerprints and DNA, when sleuths had to depend on their own powers of deduction. We attempt to analyse why Scotland produces such good crime writing, tracing back to the duality in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novels. And Kapow! Bam! Gotcha! - we look at how crime fiction translates to graphic novel format.

Sharpen your knives and hone your writing skills at our Masterclasses run by University of Stirling. And the brave can pitch their novels to a team of publishing experts, scoop a prize and maybe even a book deal.

2013 is turning out to be a great year for Scottish crime writing, and the judges for our Deanston Scottish Crime Book of the Year are in for some difficult decisions. Look out for the shortlist which will be promoted in Waterstones’ Scottish stores in September, and be the first to know the winner at our Meet the Author Dinner.

Sunday 15, 5:00pm Albert HallsAt the Top of his GameIt all began in 1997 with the publication of Killing Floor starring former American military policeman Jack Reacher. That novel won Lee four awards and propelled him towards the USA and global success. 2013 saw Lee win the lifetime achievement award, the Cartier Diamond Dagger from the UK Crime Writers Association, the highest accolade it can bestow on a member. As the finale to this year’s Bloody Scotland, come and hear Lee talk about the phenomenon that is Jack Reacher, and his 18th and most recent outing.
