Libraries Lead, Libraries Transform
National Library Week (April 8- 14, 2018) is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families, portable Internet Hot Spots and meeting rooms for the community, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for 2018 National Library Week is "Libraries Lead.” National Library Week 2018 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958. This national celebration is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and is observed in libraries across the country each April. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate every year in National Library Week.
In collaboration with Dino’s Amusements, Vincennes, KCPL will offer the National Library Week Block Party, April 13th-15th on the McGrady-Brockman House parking lot at 7th and Hart Streets. See the front page of this newsletter for more details. Close the Book on Hunger Food Drive is a project that grows each year. That’s because of collaboration with food pantries listed in this newsletter, Dino’s Amusements and your generosity. During a block party, May 25-27th, items for the food drive will be donated for free rides at the carnival at 7th and Hart. On behalf of the Knox County Public Library Board and Staff, it’s my great pleasure to welcome Roger Stremming back to the Knox County Public Library.
In 2012, Stremming did an internship with Brian Spangle at the McGrady-Brockman House. From December, 2016-March, 2017, Stremming was a library assistant and coordinated a technology training program for staff. Stremming left employment here for a job as Young Adult Librarian/Assistant Youth Department Head at the Shelby County Public Library in Shelbyville, Indiana. Stremming was graduated from Indiana University with a Master’s Degree in Library Science in May, 2017. He’ll return to the library on May 1, 2018, as the Youth Department Services Manager.
Colton Junod, Vincennes native and Butler University Pre-Med Student, recently wrote to me and here’s what he had to say: “I already told Jenny McNeece, editor Vincennes Sun-Commercial, but I loved the news story about the mural donated to the library by V.U. So unique. I’m a big Vincennes history and genealogy nerd…so it pleased me! I also wanted to say that I recently discovered the KCPL digital archives from Preservation Advantage….wow! Such a great resource. It gave us some interesting family articles that we had never seen before (and a story that we had never heard!) Thanks for putting those resources out there.”
Local historical newspapers are available online at the library’s website, www.kcpl.lib.in.us. At the bottom of the menu page click on Genealogy. On the list of links at the bottom of that page, click on Historical Newspapers.

Meet Bestselling Author, Beverly Lewis for a book signing and discussion. Lewis, who grew
up as the daughter of a Protestant minister in the heart of Amish country in Lancaster, is
known for her novels about the Amish. Lewis said, “This is what reading is like to me. It’s
finding a spring in the midst of a barren land. Just when I think I might up and die of
thirst, I stumble onto this fresh, cold water, and I’m suddenly given this new life because I
can-and-do drink to my heart’s content.”

Close the Book on Hunger Peg Dawson
Once again the Knox County Public Library will be hosting the Close the Book on Hunger food drive. In it’s fourth year, this food drive is spearheaded by the dynamic Janet Kitchin and gives us a chance to show our community how much we care. While offering you the opportunity to pay down fines, we will also be able to replenish our local food pantries. This is how it works: Throughout the entire month of May we will give you one gift certificate for a free book at our Friends of the Knox County Public Library book sale AND we will remove $1 Dollar in overdue fines for each non-perishable food item that you donate. Last year you donated over 1,500 non-perishable food items, a sizable increase from previous years. Thank you again for your generosity, and hopefully we will receive even more items this year! So, look in your cupboard, and pick up extra non-perishables at the store so we can help to fill the empty shelves in our local food pantries.
Below is a list of local food panties we help fill.

McGrady-Brockman House News Katie Miller
With the addition of archival quality shelving on the second floor and in the basement, court documents and county records can now be sorted by type and year. This has freed up other spaces, allowing more fragile photos and other documents to be carefully stored so that they can be enjoyed for generations to come. Two new displays have also been added. This includes a beautiful sofa that belonged to Indiana Territory Judge and Continental Army Captain Henry Vander-burgh and a delightfully detailed model of the Vin-cennes Union Depot.
Spring is a wonderful time to start exploring your family tree. Any of our staff will be happy to help get you started on your genealogy adventure. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned genealogist, there is much to explore at McGrady Brockman House.
Are You Ready To Rock? Peg Dawson
We are gearing up for our Summer Reading Programs here at KCPL. When you think about it, May is almost here! That’s important to us because both adults and children can register for summer reading beginning May 1st. Just come to the Circulation Desk or Youth Depart- ment with your library card and sign up. It’s as simple as that! You can start reading at any time, however, our first prize drawing will not be until June 1st. After that, we will have a weekly prize drawing through July 14th. So get ready for a rockin summer of reading and fun. Be sure to join us for our Block Party kick off on May 25th, 26th, and 27th.

What's so great about the library website?
Let me tell you, there's a lot that's great about the Knox County Public Library website (www.kcpl.lib.in.us). Need to know how to set up a Facebook account? Niche Academy is the place to start by clicking on the "Niche Academy" link or the green "Tutorials" tab on the right side of the homepage. Need a new author to read? Click on the "Novelist plus" link. Search for your favorite author and then look at the author read-alikes that will show up on the right side of the screen. Does your child need new authors to read? Click on the "Youth" link at the top of the homepage and click "Novelist K-8" which works the same as the adult version. Need scholarly articles for a school project? Click the "Inspire" link, EBSCO host or Gale Databases. These databases are provided by the Indiana State Library for anyone living in Indiana and are free to users. Inspire also offers introductory Rosetta Stone language courses, Hobbies and Crafts projects, Home Improvement arti-cles, resources for business owners and practice tests for academic endeavors like the SAT. Do you want to keep up with library events? Click on the "Newsletter" link and see what's coming up at the library. Planning a wedding and need to know if the Fortnightly Building is free on a certain date? Click the "View Full Building Schedule" link in the yel-low banner. This link will show all events taking place in library buildings. The library website offers resources for genealogy research, Hoosier history and free music downloads for the music lovers. The website is a library in itself. The library is no longer confined to the space inside walls but pulls together resources from across all of Indiana. That's pretty great.
