Vision Australia Jet Boating Event / Oct 7, 2017 Blind Sports NSW Newsletter September 2017 Edition Vision Australia has been approached by the Jetboat associaon of Australia to assist in facilitang the 2017 family fun day out with the inclusion of Dads as the focus. We have many families in the community with children who are blind or have significant vision loss. The mother, tradionally, is the primary service user. However, research evidence connually shows that closeness to fathers (resident or non-resident) across the whole lifespan is beneficial for all the physical health/ social/ psychological/ emoonal/ educaonal factors of a childs life. We have had some success with dads parcipang in previous Jet- boat events and would like the opportunity to be able to offer the Jetboat experience to our families again, encour- aging dads to aend (with mothers and the whole family!). The boats range in size from 11 to 18 feet in length, powered by 4 cylinders up to V8 engines driving marine jets. All boats are scruneered for necessary safety gear as per marime requirements. Boats are also inspected for safety by a qualified mechanic. Everyone going on a boat must wear a Personal Flotaon Device (PFD1) prior to accessing the jey / dock. Parci- pants are escorted by Vision Australia staff, Volunteers, parents/guardians or Jet Boat Associaon Australia (JAA) volunteers onto the dock. All parcipants are assisted into the boats aſter the boat is secured to the dock. JAA volunteers man the dock to ensure no-one accesses the dock without PFD and assistance. Vision Australia staff, volunteers and or parents/guardians are present in each boat. The venue is the Olympic Regaa Lake at Penrith, west of Sydney and is exclusively for our use on the day. All drivers are briefed and instructed on the agreed route to circumnavigate the lake, all hazards having been iden- fied and noted in the briefing. All drivers are very experienced jet boat drivers, and open dialogue between clients, parents/guardians and driver determines the acvity during the ride. Some prefer slow and steady; some prefer to experience some of the ma- noeuvrability unique to a jet boat. All drivers are briefed clearly about the importance of safety, and all drive well within the capability of both their boat and ability. Date: 7 October 2017 / 9am to 3pm / BYO Picnic Lunch Location: International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes. Enter via Gate A, just off Old Castlereagh Rd. Bus to and from Penrith Station by booking only and limited seats. finishing strong with two wins. If you want

First Blind Football National Camp

There are two versions of Blind Football a 5 a side ver-

sion played by totally blind players wearing blindfolds

played on a 40 by 20 meter pitch and this version of

the game is a Paralympic Sport with a fully sighted

Goalkeeper who coaches on field with his defence. The

ball is audible and rattles to allow blind players orien-

tation. There is also the legally blind version which is

less than 10% of fully sight. There is 7 a side in this

game with a vision impaired Goalkeeper. Blind Sports

Australia together with Blind Sports NSW & Blind

Sports and Recreation VIC supported the first National

Football Camp at Ultimate Soccer in Fairfield this past

weekend. This will be the first step in selecting Austral-

Belles and Storm make semi finals in Thailand

Page 5 September 2017 Edition

With 2018 World Championships spots on the line, The Asia Pacific Goalball Regional Champion-

ships kicked off in Thailand hosting 8 men teams and 6 women teams. China had already qualified

in the Women’s by way of finishing top 3 in the Rio Paralympic Games.

The Aussie Storm dominated in the round robin portion of the championships knocking off top

teams including Japan and former Paralympic Gold Medalists China who Australia haven’t beaten

in the men’s competition since 1994. They won their quarter final 12-2 but China defeated them in

the semi final and then Japan came back to win the Bronze medal. Overall a very strong perfor-

mance by the Aussie Storm who had Steffan Nero on debut in the senior team. Jon Horsborgh won

the leading goal scorer award for the Championships.

The Aussie Belles also started strong winning their first two games against Thailand and Korea but

then drew with Iran and lost to strong womens teams in China and Japan. They again lost to China

in the semi final but rallied to defeat Korea and win the bronze medal.

It will now be a wait for both sides to find out if they will make 2018 Goalball World Cup in Sweden

through the ratio system having missed automatic qualification. Both programs had encouraging

performances off the back of the Women’s under 19 win in the Youth World Cup. Australian pro-

grams at the elite level are continuing to perform and achieve improved results. To start playing

Goalball email us at [email protected] or call Tami on 0431 268561.
