Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning
Established in 1922, the parish family of St. John the Baptist Church welcomes and invites all people to our community, especially those in need. Guided by the Holy Spirit we are sustained by the Sunday Eucharist, the Word of God, and the Sacraments. All are encouraged to share their time, talent and treasure as we grow in love through our Catholic faith and the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Meeting of September 26, 2019 Summary
1. Fiscal Year 2018-2019: Lindsay Finter (bookkeeper) dis-tributed operating statements for the year ended 8/31/19. Revenues totaled $921k, 4% ($40k) below the prior year. This decline is largely a function of no special collection for hym-nals ($13k), loss of Verizon revenue ($20k) and a lower level of preschool revenue ($14k). Expenses totaled $829k, 2% ( $13k) below the prior year. Within expenses were $34k of repairs & renovations including new signage, resurfacing & repainting the parking lot and replacement of one (of four) air conditioning unit. The net of revenues and expenses was a surplus of just under $92k, versus a surplus of $118k the
prior year.
2. Parish Debt: There is no update from the diocese our request to reduce the debt incurred in the past.
3. Gas Conversion: Final conclusion on converting the boilers to gas ( versus current method of oil fired) = no conversion. National Grid is not accepting any new customers and the cost to convert would consume more than the amount saved in 10 years. This is now a closed item.
4. Parish 100th Anniversary: Father updated the group regarding the many discussions underway regarding the Centennial for the parish. It is a given that we will have to replace the damaged sanctuary floor, and we have a rough estimate. As these designs and other updates to the church are more clearly defined a more firm estimate can be totaled. We want our parishioners to feel part of our Centennial Celebration and the renewal of the church interior, so we are con-sidering a fundraising effort .
5. Annual Stewardship Renewal: Members of the finance committee will present the full Parish Fi-nance Report at Masses the weekend of Oct. 26 & 27. This is the second week pf Stewardship Renewal. The schedule for presentations is as follows: - John Dennehy, 5:00 on Saturday, John Hauser, 7:30 on Sunday, Rich Rossin. 9:15 on Sunday and Bob Lutz , 11:15 on Sunday.
6. Update on Child’s Victims Act: In the State of New York the “window” for abuse cases is now open. The Diocese of Rockville Centre handles all these cases. At this time we do not see any effects on the parish level. Some diocese declare bankruptcy, and this time the Diocese of Rockville Centre is not going to do this. However, should things change we will be kept informed. We continue to pray for healing for all those who are survivors of abuse.
Next meeting slated for 7:00 pm Thursday January 23, 2020.
Note: The roster of Finance Committee members is printed in the front of the bulletin.

Please consider “automated giving” as you reflect on support of our parish family! The fruitful ministries at our parish are examples of how many of you have answered, and continue to answer, that call. To ensure such work can continue requires not only gifts of time, but also of financial help. I ask you to prayerfully consider supporting our parish with electronic donations through Faith Direct. You can find paper enrollment forms in the parish office, or you can sign up online at www.faithdirect.net by using our church code, NY67.

Understanding the Mass
46. Sitting at Mass
At work, at play, at meals, but especially at rest—oh how we love to sit. Whether we collapse into a cushy chair, sweaty from the sun, or scooch up to the break-fast table after a good night’s rest, sitting signals relaxa-tion. It helps us veg out, turn off our attention, and defy the world to entertain us as best it can. Even bicycle rid-
ers endure the rigors of exercising while enjoying the pleasures of sitting down. Because so much of leisure comes by sitting, we can settle too deeply for relaxation
whenever we sit at Mass. Normally the parts of the Mass that call for our active par-ticipation see us standing: singing songs, reciting the creed, praying the Lord’s Pray-
er, and sharing communion, for example. But once in a while we sit. We sit for the readings, the responsorial psalm, the homily, the preparation of the altar and the gifts,
and usually during the thanksgiving after communion. Obviously these are not mo-ments of complete rest. Even when we sit, we do something at Mass. We listen. We
pray. We reflect. We open our hearts to God’s Spirit. Consequently, the sitting we do at Mass promotes neither inactivity nor inter-
mission. The Scripture readings above all demand heedful concentration. Unnecessary activity during these times of the Mass make it difficult for us and other worshipers alike to sit attentively.
After the service, we can better enjoy the relaxation that sitting invites. We can linger a little longer to converse with those who share our faith. Then leisure leads to relationship. Although sitting at Mass still solicits our attention, sitting after Mass re-laxes and builds up the muscles of the Body of Christ.
