20th Week of Ordinary Time—Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—Monday, August 15

Discipleship Training will begin on

Wednesday, August 17th at 7:00 to-8:30

in the St. Dominic Room with Fr. Simon.

My dear friends, As we continue to explore the meaning of Evangelization and how we live it out, let us take a small review of what we have said so far:

A. The Mission of the Church is Evangelization and we are all called to take part in it.

B. The foundation of Evangelization is a deep prayer life which is carefully undertaken by setting goals and holding oneself accountable to them.

C. The living out of the Church’s mission is through an active interior life,( controlling thoughts, ascetical practice, deep prayer, and self-reflection) and an active life of love, (the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, social justice, and evangelization)

Today, let us think about the meaning of the word disciple in the context of our faith. Consider the contrast between a believer and a disciple. A believes is one who believes in Jesus Christ. A disciple is a student who actively is engaged in learning and carrying out the teachings of Christ. The actions of a Disciple are prayer, study, community, and service. The foundations of discipleship are the Sacraments, the Word of God, The Liturgy, and desire for union with God.

Summary definition: A Disciple of Christ is one who is rooted in the Word of God and the Sacraments, and Divine Liturgy, fueled by a deep desire for Union with God, who is participating in the mission of the Church to Evangelize the whole world through

deep spiritual practices and acts of love, kindness and compassion in our world. In short... YOU!

Fr. Simon Felix says….

JOYFUL LIVING………..Deep Prayer, Deep Discipleship, and Deep Desire

The Monday Night Gospel Bible study will

resume on August 22nd from 7:10-8:30 PM. We prepare for the Gospel reading through prayer, discussion, and faith sharing.

Prayer and Praise Worship Event Join us on Sunday, August 14th from

2:00 to 4:00 PM for a worship event in the Friary. This time of reflection, prayer, song, and

enthusiastic worship led by St. Paul’s prayer group alumni is open to ALL.

Fr. Simon Felix is looking for parishioners who feel they might be called to lead prayer groups at Blessed Sacrament. These prayer groups can be devotional, intercessory, contemplative, or Biblical. Please contact Fr. Simon for a discussion on the possibility of leading a prayer group.

Because August 15th falls on a Monday in 2016, it is

NOT a Holy Day of Obligation.

Blessed Sacrament Community

Bring a side dish or dessert to share and head over to Hoyt Park after Mass. We will grill the brats and make the lemonade! Let’s celebrate our Dominican heritage and welcome Fr. Andy and our new staff members!

Just as a reminder, we'll be sending out the next schedule (August 29th through November 22nd) for liturgical ministers in a few weeks, so please update your Ministry Schedule Pro profile and availability before August 15th. This time, we will also include ushers. Since people who volunteer only as ushers may not be familiar with our scheduling software, please feel free to contact Matt directly for help. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with our parish! Contact me by email at [email protected].

Study of the Gospel of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew is known as the

“gospel of fulfillment”, the most Jewish

gospel, the handbook for discipleship.

To achieve his purpose, Matthew

structures his gospel in five large blocks of speech material.

Written after 70 AD, it contains material not found in Mark.

Each Thursday starting September 22 and continuing for six

weeks, Brother Edward will explore the message and spirituality

of this Gospel at 10:00AM and 7:00PM in the Saint Dominic

Room of the Parish Center. There is no registration or charge for

the class.

Catholic Medical Professionals: We are in the planning stages of hosting a group at Blessed Sacrament that will address your needs as Catholics in the healing arts. You can live out the fullness of your vocation with the support of the Church and other medical professionals of all ages and stages of life! Whether you are a Med Student at UW or a retired nurse, you can help and benefit others in your field. Please call Fr. Andy at 608.238.3471, x 117 or email him at [email protected] for more information.

NEW Study offering!

CATHOLICISM: THE PIVOTAL PLAYERS September 26—October 31

The first part of Bishop Robert Barron’s new series on some of the most influential people in the

Catholic Church will begin on Monday September 26 and continue for six

weeks. The session will be held in the Saint Dominic Room of the Parish

Center at 10:00AM and 7:00PM. This Fall you will discover the

places where St. Thomas Aquinas lived, learned and wrote. Visit the countryside where

St. Francis gathered a group of friars and revived the

Church. See the places where Catherine of Siena ministered and prayed. In the Spring we will meet three other great thinkers.

Bible Study Fall 2016 & Winter 2017

We all love a good story, but the parables of Jesus are even better than that! They sneak up on us, catch us off guard, and topple our easy assumptions. This Bible study introduces twelve of the greatest stories ever told and may even change your thoughts and actions.

Parables: The Greatest Stories Ever Told will meet beginning October 11 on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:45 PM in the Parish Center. The first six week session will conclude on November 22. The second six week session will begin in early January. Each week, participants will read passages from Scripture and come prepared to answer and discuss questions from a study guide. The fee for the course is $7. Contact Don and Jan Haasl at [email protected] with any questions

or by September 18 to register.

Bags, Egg Cartons, and Food Donations Wanted! St Vincent

de Paul Food Pantry would appreciate your extra shopping bags (plastic, paper, & reusable) and egg

cartons (6, 12, & 18 packs). As always, your donations of non-perishable foods are appreciated, too! Please put bags and cartons in the plastic bin inside of the wooden box for pantry donations, located at the back of church. If you have a large bundle, please bring them to the Parish Center weekdays between 9:00 and 4:00 PM. Thank you!
