Scripture readings can be found at : http://www.usccb.org/bible/ First Reading:

Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day. (Jer 20:8) The Old

Testament reading is from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, who – at first – feels the Lord has let him down and decides not to speak for the Lord anymore. But he comes to recognize that the word of God burns in his heart, that he must continue doing the work God called him to do.

Psalm: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. (Ps 63) The Responsorial Psalm

expresses an ardent longing for God. Psalm 63 was written when David was in the wilderness of Judah. Second Reading: I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. (Rom 12:1) In the New Testament reading from his Letter to

the Romans, Saint Paul (like the Prophet Jeremiah) reminds us that doing God’s will is not always easy. Being a living sacrifice often means putting those in need first, being different, or becoming transformed to know what is pleasing to God.

Gospel: Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mt 16:24) In the Gospel, Jesus corrects

Peter who did not under-stand when Jesus said He would go to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise again. Like many others, Peter expected Jesus to be a conquering Messiah. The cross was essential to the life work of Christ, as the cross of denial and suffering is necessary for the life work of any true follower of Christ.

Inspiration for the Week Secular problems require savvy secular solutions. We are trained to solve problems, be successful and productive, and find our way through all that life presents to us. Corporations value those who can decipher the best avenue to take in order to resolve an issue. How do you train and renew your mind? Facts, figures, scientific tools, analytical processes, best practices, and models of varying kinds are at our disposal. If we don’t know the full and proper course of action, we can easily find it. But there is a knowledge that goes far beyond all these things that makes a direct claim on the essence of our being. It satisfies a deeper thirst and hunger that keeps us restless until it is satisfied. Our minds, hearts, and souls cannot only be nurtured purely by secular and temporal things. We must seek the enlightenment that comes from God. This allows us to see the value of suffering in order to achieve a greater good and the losing of our very self in the service of something greater. Faith only makes sense if it can bring us to this heightened awareness. ©LPi

Dear Jesus, Thank you for the gift of learning! I want to grow closer to you in everything I do at school. In math and science, help me to see your beautiful plan in the world. Help me to discover new stories and values as I read and write. In arts and music, help me to be creative. In sports, help me to treat my teammates and my opponents fairly. Help me to learn new skills in technology. Jesus, you are the perfect teacher. Help me to listen with open ears, an open heart, and an open mind to all my teachers at school. Help me to treat my classmates with care, kindness, and respect. Thank you, Jesus, for school! Amen.

At the request of Bishop Scharfenberger, a collection to assist relief efforts in the aftermath of the deadly August 4th explosion in Beirut, Lebanon , will be taken up throughout the Diocese. There will be baskets at the doors

of the church as you exit Mass, this Sunday and next, for those who wish to make a donation. All proceeds will be sent to Catholic Relief Services, which will then forward the donations to their partner on the ground, Caritas-Lebanon, to provide emergency food, shelter, medicine and more in the affected area. “The massive explosion in Beirut injured more than 5,000 and killed more than 200. The before and after images of the area are devastating. Nothing was untouched. As a result, our brothers and sisters in that region desperately need our assistance”, said Bishop Scharfenberger. “I also ask that you remember them in prayer as they face the monumental task of rebuilding their lives and their neighborhood.” For those who are unable to attend Mass, donations can be made online at www.crs.org
