Easter Sunday — Resurrection of the Lord — April 1, 2018

Easter Sunday Resurrection of the Lord Blessed Sacrament April 1, 2018

From The Pastor

Following Wisdom’s Lead

(Adapted from “The Catholic Church used to be like Silicon Valley. Can it be again?” by Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry. America, December 13, 2017)

The Church offers many worthy and innovative forms of social outreach, like L’Arche, the Cristo Rey educa-tional program and Homeboy Industries, but is the Church the undisputed leader of innovation in the world today—where it should be under the direction of “Wisdom”? The Bill Gates foundation is doing more to eradicate world-wide malaria than the Catholic Church. Why? Is the Church now lacking the “ethos” that prompted the invention of the university, the original social welfare system, hospitals and new agricultural technologies like plant genetics, the wheeled plow, the horse harness, the nailed horseshoe and three-field crop rotation? These caused an agricultural revolution that broke the counterproductive cycle that kept Western Europe in bondage since the time of the Greeks. This is also the cause and result of the disappearance of slav-ery across the Western world. Slavery is not only mor-ally wicked, it is also economically destructive, since it removes incentives from both workers and capital owners to invest in productivity-enhancing skill. All these are examples of the spirit behind the improve-ments that launched the modern world. Where is that innovative mentality now that would better serve hu-manity by feeding the hungry, instructing the ignorant and effecting broad-based social change?

Aux Captifs la Libération (“Freedom to the Captives”) is a Catholic ministry founded in 1981 by the Rev. Pat-rick Giros, a diocesan priest in Paris, with the goal of reinventing social work. The concept is both simple and earth-shaking. Captifs trains volunteers or workers to roam the Paris streets at night to help the homeless, “with empty hands.” They do not offer coffee or blan-kets. Only when there is a genuine bond and trust with a homeless person—something which might take days, weeks, months or even years to establish—do they pro-pose specific interventions, which can range from free housing in a community apartment to training and re-habilitation programs. These interventions have a much higher rate of success in helping people off the street. Homeless people, who suffer greatly from social isola-tion and sometimes from mental illness, need this re-

covery of social trust before they can begin to take charge of their lives.

This is true Catholic innovation and incarnate theology in action. While the modern, mechanistic worldview sees people as machines who need correct inputs to function properly, Captifs sees people as made in the image of the Trinitarian God, whose most pressing, ontological need is relationship. This theology produc-es specific, novel techniques that bear real fruit. Catho-lic innovation need not involve whiz-bang technology; but it should involve active techniques. Abstract ideas and doctrine, good intentions and even enthusiasm are not enough. We need an incarnate theology, not an es-cape to a disembodied heaven. Revelation describes the New Jerusalem as descending to earth, not as a place to which believers ascend.

Organizations like Captifs are the gospel mustard seed. The miraculous Easter tree that can grow from them is the reinvigoration of social work all across the planet. And the Church should bloom with such insights. Sili-con Valley’s dominance is not due to the quality of their ideas; it is due to the highly effective, relentless and hungry way that it scales up those ideas to achieve global dominance. Facebook went from an online di-rectory for students at one college to a global platform that offers countless communications services around just one key idea—using the internet to improve social relations. Let “Wisdom of God” produce the ideas!

We should be alarmed that those taking on the project of creation-repair, are mostly secular scientists, for there is no good reason to believe that they, working from a shaky metaphysics, or from only profit-seeking motives are up to the challenge, or that their cure will not be worse than the disease. It is still up to us in the Church to fix the planet, as it always was and the stakes are high, not just for the Church but for the world as well. Pope Francis’ urgent emphasis on Cath-olic creation care in “Laudato Si” is timely indeed. Do we have an answer to the apparent contradiction that care for creation is in conflict with the condemnation of artificial family planning—given the fact that this would lead to explosive population growth? Not yet! But under the guidance of the Spirit we trust that a just society will also produce the innovations needed to overcome this anomaly. Following the creative Wis-dom of the Spirit should always be the first duty and central concern of the Church. Let this be our Easter resolution.
