OUR HOPE AND GOD’S PROMISE The Church uses these waning November days and darker skies as the season to remind us of the last things. Today’s feast, the Solemnity of All Saints, is the centerpiece of three days that point to doctrines we proclaim each time we say the Apostles’ Creed: “We believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” And while the days and our hearts may be dark, the readings today are bright with the light of faith. John’s vision in the book of Revelation reveals dazzling angels and white-robed saints gathered in triumph around the throne of God. In the responsorial psalm we sing our longing to see God’s face, and in the second reading John writes that we are God’s children and will, in fact, see God “as he is” (1 John 3:2). This is our hope. This is God’s promise. Today we celebrate the triumph of those who already gaze on the face of God. Tomorrow we cry out for mercy with those in purgatory, who, like us on earth, still long to see God’s face. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading John’s vision of a vast throng from every nation and people, whose robes had been made white in the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14). NUESTRA ESPERANZA Y LA PROMESA DE DIOS La Iglesia usa estos días que se acortan y los cielos oscuros como el tiempo para recordarnos las postrimerías de la vida. La fiesta de hoy, la Solemnidad de Todos los Santos, es el centro de tres días que nos presentan las doctrinas que proclamamos cada vez que rezamos el Credo de los Apóstoles: “Creemos en la Iglesia católica, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección de los muertos y la vida perdurable”. Y mientras que los días y nuestro corazón parezcan oscuros, las lecturas de hoy están llenas de la luz de la fe. La visión de Juan en el libro del Apocalipsis revela ángeles resplandecientes y santos con túnicas blancas reunidos triunfantemente alrededor del trono de Dios. En el salmo responsorial cantamos sobre nuestro anhelo de ver el rostro de Dios, y en la segunda lectura, Juan escribe que somos hijos de Dios y que veremos a Dios “tal como es”. Esa es nuestra esperanza. Esa es la promesa de Dios. Hoy celebramos el triunfo de aquellos que ya contemplan el rostro de Dios. And we are united with all the saints: not only the most well known, from the calen-dar, but also those “next door”, our family members and acquaintances who are now part of that great multitude. Therefore, today is a family celebration. The saints are close to us, indeed they are our truest brothers and sisters. They understand us, love us, know what is truly good for us, help us and await us. They are happy and want us to be happy with them in paradise. Thus they invite us on the path of happi-ness, indicated by today’s beautiful and well-known Gospel passage: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.... Blessed are the meek.... Blessed are the pure in heart...” (cf. Mt 5:3-8). But how? The Gospel says blessed are the poor, while the world says blessed are the rich. The Gospel says blessed are the meek, while the world says blessed are the overbearing. The Gospel says blessed are the pure, while the world says blessed are the cunning and the pleasure-seekers. This way of the Beatitudes, of holiness, seems to always lead to defeat. Yet — the first read-ing also reminds us — the Saints hold “palm branches in their hands” (Rev 7:9), which is a symbol of victory. They have prevailed, not the world. And they exhort us to choose their side, that of God who is Holy. Let us ask ourselves which side we are on: that of heaven or that of earth? Do we live for the Lord or for ourselves, for eternal happiness or for some immediate gratifica-tion? Let us ask ourselves: do we truly want holiness? Or are we content with being Christians without infamy and without praise, who believe in God and esteem their neighbour, but without overemphasizing. “The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created” (Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, 1). Thus, either holiness or nothing! It is good for us to let ourselves be spurred by the saints, who did not use half-measures here, and are ‘cheering us on’ from there, so that we may choose God, humility, meekness, mercy, purity, so that we may be impassioned by heaven rather than earth.

Estamos unidos a todos los santos: no solo a los más conocidos, del calendario, sino también a los «de la puerta de al lado», a los miembros de nuestra familia y conoci-dos que ahora forman parte de esa inmensa multitud. Hoy, pues, es una fiesta familiar. Los santos están cerca de nosotros, de he-cho, son nuestros verdaderos hermanos y hermanas. Nos entienden, nos aman, saben lo que es nuestro verdadero bien, nos ayu-dan y nos esperan. Son felices y nos quie-ren felices con ellos en el paraíso. Por este motivo, nos invitan al camino de la felicidad, indicado en el Evangelio de hoy, tan hermoso y conocido: «Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu [...] Bienaventurados los mansos, Bienaventurados los limpios de corazón... » (cf. Mateo 5, 3-8). El Evangelio dice bienaventurados los pobres, mientras que el mundo dice bienaventurados los ri-cos. El Evangelio dice bienaventurados los mansos, mientras que el mundo dice biena-venturados los prepotentes. El Evangelio di-ce bienaventurados los puros, mientras que el mundo dice bienaventurados los astutos y los vividores. Este camino de la bienaventu-ranza, de la santidad, parece conducir al fra-caso. Y, sin embargo, —la primera lectura nos lo recuerda de nuevo— los santos tienen «palmas en sus manos» (v. 9), es decir, los símbolos de la victoria. Han ganado ellos, no el mundo. Y nos exhortan a elegir su parte, la de Dios que es santo. Preguntémonos de qué lado estamos: ¿del cielo o de la tierra? ¿Vivimos para el Señor o para nosotros mismos, para la feli-cidad eterna o para alguna satisfacción ahora? Preguntémonos: ¿realmente quere-mos la santidad? ¿O nos contentamos con ser cristianos sin pena ni gloria, que creen en Dios y estiman a los demás pero sin exa-gerar? El Señor «lo pide todo, y lo que ofre-ce es la verdadera vida, la felicidad para la cual fuimos creados» (Exhortación apostóli-ca Gaudete et exsultate, 1). En resumen, ¡o santidad o nada! Es bueno para nosotros dejarnos provocar por los santos, que no han tenido medias tintas aquí y desde allí nos «animan» para que elijamos a Dios, la humildad, la mansedumbre, la misericordia, la pureza, para que nos apasionemos por el cielo más que por la tierra.

Keeping Christ in Christmas magnets will be available for purchase in the Narthex after Sunday Masses in December. The Knights of council #9903 recently sponsored a blood drive at St Michaels on October 4th, success-fully raising 20 pints of critically needed blood for Carter Blood Drive. Mark your calendar, the next blood drive will be Sunday, January 10th.
