    EFL Blogging School Conference February, 21,2015 Created by Emma Matreniuc

  • Blended-Blended-Blended

  • Blended Learning=Flipped Classroom= Inverted Classroom=Reverse Teaching Blended learningis a formal education program;face-to-face classroom methods are combined withcomputer-mediated activities;students learn instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path or paceFlipped classroomis a form ofblended learningstudents learn content online by watching video lectures, usually at home;

    homewokis done in class with teachers and students discussing and solving questions; Teacher interaction with students is more personalized - guidance instead of lecturing

  • Flipped Classroom==Blended Learning Face-to-face teaching + online learning

  • What is a Flipped Classroom a pedagogical model where homework elements of a course are reversed;At home --short video lectures are viewed by students before the class session;In-class --time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. The video lecture is often seen as the key ingredient in the flipped approach; such lectures being either created by the instructor and posted online or selected from an online repository.. The notion of a flipped classroom presupposes:active learning, student engagement, hybrid course design, and course podcasting;Class changes into a workshop where students can: inquire about lecture content; test their skills in applying knowledge; interact with one another in hands-on activities; During class sessions, instructors function: as coaches or advisors; encourage students in individual inquiry and collaborative effort

  • Clintondale High School Teachers discovered: short videos (36 minutes) were the most effective; the school uses audio files, readings and videos from theKhan Academy,TED and other sources;students unable to watch the videos at home watch the videos in school;

  • Blogging Value Blog incorporates several subjects and makes English an interdesciplinarian lesson.Blogs benefits for students: -- they can read, write, watch,listen,post, reply and communicate with teachers and peers;-- get and prepare for the assignments/tasks; --get the results on-line from Teachers;--use dictionary on-line;--listen to native speakers

  • The vast and growing archives of digital text and speech, along with new analysis techniques and inexpensive computation, are a modern equivalent of the 17th-century invention of the telescope and microscope (Mark Liberman) The future of language-learning by technological gadgets is already here, but many more improvements are still underway.

  • The framework of the flipped model seems to be especially ideal for language learners While watching the video at home, the students can work at their own pace and repeat video as many times as necessary; The visual content capabilities of a video enhances language learning better than static textbooks;When language learners are given more opportunities to interact with their peers, the learners will have authentic language experiences that will improve their proficiency dramatically;http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/INFOGRAPHIC AB FLIP

  • Students complain Too many textbook tasks;Old-fashioned method;Boring to stay and only read and write

    While Online Tools Offer:-- use of the devices/appliances;--study in new environment;--always be with English;--be in Real World with new knowledge

  • It is significant because: In a traditional lecture:students often try to capture what the instant the speaker says;they cannot stop to reflect upon what is being said;they may miss significant points because they are trying to transcribe the instructors words While in Bended Classroom:instructors detect errors in thinking, writing, reading, listening; collaborative projects can encourage social interaction among students; students learn from one another and for those of varying skill levels they support their peers

  • What? Why? Where? How does it work? The traditional world language classroom include:diverse learning styles and levels -- need for different pacing;Flipped classroom:having sufficient contact time with each student; allowing each student time to produce language during class;the struggle to maintain target language use, even during complicated grammar or culture lessons

    . During class sessions, instructors function as coaches or advisors, encouraging students in individual inquiry and collaborative effort.

  • Where do we find the video for flipped classrooms? How?Find videos that can connect to your "traditional" lessons:YouTubeKhan AcademyTED-EdBrainPOP, andBrainPOP Jr.BrainPOP ESLBrainPOPEspaolandBrainPOPFranais

  • Benefits vs Downsides The flipped model puts more of the responsibility for learning on the shoulders of students while giving them greater impetus to experiment; Activities can be student-led, and communication among students can become the determining dynamic of a session devoted to learning through hands-on work.

    an effective flip requires careful preparation; recording lectures requires effort and time on the part of faculty; out-of-class and in-class elements must be carefully integrated for students to understand the model and be motivated to prepare for class.

  • How flipping works for teachers

    Save time; stop repeating yourselfRecord re-usable video lessons, so you don't have to do it again next year. It's easy to make minor updates to perfect lessons over time once the initial recording is done;Let students take control of their learningNot all students learn at the same pace. Allow students to rewind and replay your lectures. Give students the time they need to process the lesson, so they come to school prepared to ask the questions they need to be answered;Spend more time with studentsBuild stronger student-teacher relationships, and promote higher level thinking. Since your class will watch the lectures as homework, you can spend class time working one-on-one with students to get them beyond simple memorization.
