Arti cleFuture for the Failure
Mr. Basheerahamed J SikandarAsso. Professor & HOD, Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing
Every individual make mistakes but mistakes are meant to be a step of success. Success is no loss of enthusiasm but failure is just loss of enthusiasm. The failure will feel overwhelmed, frustrated, depressed and blaming self because of some mistakes he or she had made. Faced with great opportuniti es to make some good progress in his or her life, he had struggled and had all but wasted the opportuniti es. The sense of failure is so bitt er because the foolishness was of his or her own making.
A consistent and reliable friend is bett er than a friend who only appears on festi ve day. Failure is that friend, which almost welcome every one. Struggle is friend of success and failure, if you struggle you will get success but, if you stop struggling you will fail. If you are afraid of failure and do not put yourself in situati ons where you might fail, then you will unlikely to succeed at anything meaningful. Everyone has experienced failure at some point or other in his/her life. And while it is not easy to keep walking when it happens, once you have dream life of failure or something like that it forces you to look for new ways and be more creati ve. However, fi nding inspirati on from failure is oft en easier said than done.
For anyone trying to get back on their feet aft er a setback, here are some short term steps to get you back stronger than ever.
Accept the failure, because it can also be your downfall if you refuse to admit failure. An important thing to remember is that, if you fi nd yourself in a hole, stop digging. If you can recognize your failure then you will be able to recast it into something more likely to succeed. Failure teaches you what does not work for you. Remember your failure makes you worthless. Failing just means you strolled up the wrong path, one not meant for you. Instead of dwelling on where you went wrong, remember
4
all the ti mes when things went right. Find a way to learn from this mistake, the same way you have learned from other ones. Do not expect miracles overnight. It is diffi cult to get back fast but take a ti me out to set mind and by so doing avoid diving deeper into despair. The human spirit is something which bounces back again if you allow yourself. However, it is your choice to make, so choose to come back stronger rather than looser.
You cannot change the past. So you stop worrying about it. Take acti on, combine your energy of knowledge, experience, skills and your strengths to grow stronger and powerful and move on to accomplish your purpose and success. More importantly, don’t ever think you are ideal or perfecti onist it retard your growth. Then success will be at your feet.

Alumni ColumnNursing and Me
By: Titt le Varghese R N (New Zealand)
Why Nursing? Being a man and being employed
in a traditi onally female dominated work space,
this has been the most asked questi on since the
beginning of my career and quite contrary to
earlier studies it was really challenging to break in
to the gynocracy and fi nding my own identi ty as a
nurse. Even with more males entering the nursing
workforce due to the att racti veness of overseas
job contracts and job security, it has always been a
female oriented world and men had to learn adapt
to it.
The most convincing reply I was able to
deliver would be always on the line how noble
the profession while downplaying the job
opportuniti es, especially and the job security that
comes with it, while the latt er has been the true
aspirati on. Even in college, the curriculum dictated
that altruism, the moral orientati on of care, was the
overall philosophy and human dignity appeared as
a core value. But the truth is at ti mes I have failed
to answer myself as to why I had taken nursing in
the fi rst place.
My prior to training understanding of nursing
role was limited to the stereotypical nurse who
follows doctors (who at that ti me I believed were
the sole decision makers in health team) around
and undertake responsibiliti es or task assigned
by doctors. But to my surprise, when I started my
career in New Zealand, I came to witness the reality
of teamwork and shared responsibility when it
came to making criti cal decisions about treatment
and care and that’s when I started understanding
the dynamics of professional identi ty and its
relati ons to the concepts of self esteem, self image,
professional functi on of the nurse.
Nursing in New Zealand has been a great
transformati onal experience and at the same ti me
a cultural shock too in a positi ve way. For instance,
I was awed by the respect and dignity that was
bestowed upon me when a house offi cer or junior
level doctor actually asked me on advice about safe
discharge planning of a parti cular pati ent. While
back in India my role was more of that a errand
boy running from task to task for the physician or
nurse administrators and fi rst ti me in my career, I
was actually contributi ng to the overall well being
of an individual. It made ecstati c as well as proud
of what I do as a nurse.
However when I look back and also think about
my not so fortune colleagues and fellow nurses in
India, who haven’t had actually had a chance to get
a bett er positi on in a developed country like New
Zealand are sti ll Victi ms of identi ty crisis and also
the frustrati on and job dissati sfacti on that comes
along with it. Recent news stories regarding nurses
or nursing students in India, going through stressful
ti mes not only on the fi nancial front due to limited
opportuniti es and also due to the lack of respect
and dignity that the role actually deserves and not
being able to defi ne and identi ty.
However these scenarios are not new to history
and even developed societi es might have gone
through these tectonic eff ects and might have had
its reservati ons to change as well, but change itself
is inevitable. Stronger union spirit and collecti ve
bargaining for bett er working conditi ons and the
creati on of many thought leaders in the fi eld are
prime examples of the imminent change and
bett erment of nurses all over. As aptly pointed out
by Roberts (2000) it is high ti me to change our point
of view from viewing this problem from the victi m
or oppressed groups rather proposes a process for
nurses as they begin to understand their oppression
and develop more positi ve images of themselves
and other nurses. It is crucial that nurses defi ne a
professional and sociocultural identi ty, focusing on
the signifi cant contributi ons in the restorati on and
maintenance of the health of individual families
and the community and thereaft er we can unite
and fi ght for the rights of the nursing community.
Now aft er I have fi nally realized what the role of
8
nursing means I guess its more than what it should
be it is more about what it should not be. For
instance if it is physicians responsibility to diagnose,
predict prognosis and prescribe treatments, nurses
need not waste their ti me trying to override or
duplicate physician’s judgment. Rather we can
work as a team in collati ng and communicati ng
the necessary informati on regarding the pati ent’s
conditi on or history that will aid in the diagnosis
and treatment modality for that pati ent.
According to Macintosh (2004) as newly
graduati ng nurses face the challenges when it
comes to expectati ons versus experiences, she
proposed a three stage process of reworking
professional identi ty, namely assuming adequacy,
realizing practi ce and developing a reputati on.
Nurses move through stages more quickly and at
diff erent levels with each stage and help to develop
professional identi ty and educati onal insti tuti on
can play a signifi cant role in empowering future
nurses.
Currently nurses practi cing in developed
health care delivery systems get to maintain
a symbioti c relati onship with other members
of the health team and thereby share mutual
respect for each other’s professional scope and
skill sets. For instance working along with the
pharmacist to fi ne tune the medicati ons for the
pati ent and even mediati ng the necessary changes
by informing the prescribers about the adverse
reacti ons and compliance issues that the pati ent
face and eventually help the pati ents to overcome
these challenges. Also collaborati ng with various
therapists help the pati ent achieve an acceptable
level of independence prior to discharge to their
home. Teaming up with social services to assess
and remedy social issues like fi nancial or cultural
support requirements that were assessed while
interacti ng with the pati ent but at the same ti me
also understanding the limitati on of our roles and
the organizati on and the community we serve. This
only becomes possible a clear and disti nct identi ty
regarding who we are and what we do as nurses
and our contributi on to the health care delivery
system and only then will we be able to accept
ourselves and truly love the work we do.
By adopti ng the classical defi niti on of nursing:
“ The unique functi on of the nurse is to assist the
individual, sick or well, in the performance of those
acti viti es contributi ng to health or its recovery
(or to peaceful death) that he would perform
unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or
knowledge” (Henderson & Nite; 1978) we can
disti ll our identi ty as those who help our pati ents
in all possible ways to restore his health but also
by not overshadowing or duplicati ng the eff orts of
other health team members.
Having a clear career path also helps in creati ng
disti nct roles with well defi ned objecti ves and
scope and thus helping in consolidati ng an identi ty
for new or practi cing nurses. Career paths include
clinical nurse roles that focus on bedside care and
help in the recovery process, nurse administrator
roles that serve the academic spirit and strive to
discover new avenues and fronts for nursing and
nurse educator roles that focus on learning and
teaching nursing related topics to students and
staff .
To sum it up, once a clarity has been obtained
regarding the professional identi ty we can always
be assured and confi dent in the scope as well as
limitati ons as to what we can achieve as nurses,
while empowering each and every nurse to
be proud of themselves and thereby starti ng a
revoluti on in their respecti ve societi es and fi ght
to achieve the long overdue rights and dignity
deserved by this noble profession.

Issues in Nursing
Nursing is considered to be the oldest of art and youngest of profession. Nursing profession is the core of health care system. But it is the one which is understi mated and over looked. There are various issues which hinders the growth of nursing profession. One of which is issues related to nursing educati on.
Today, nursing educati on in India faces lot of issues which results in poor quality educati on. The issues are discussed as follows:
1. Selecti on of students: At present there is a lack of valid tool to select the appropriate students who can perceive nursing with their own interest and zeal. This is further complicated by presence of innumerous nursing insti tuti ons growing like a mushrooms which off er courses without any basic infrastructure and faciliti es. Hence, there is ongoing problem in admission of students to nursing profession. So the authoriti es of insti tuti ons are forced to admit the students to the course without following any rules for selecti on process in order to fi ll the seats. The end result of this ongoing issue is poor results and poor outcomes.
2. Gap between theory and practi ce: There is a vast gap between theory which is actually taught in the classroom setti ng and what the student do in the clinical setti ng. Lack of proper equipments and supplies needed for provision of pati ent care is the most common issue which cause gap between theory and practi ce. Further, the students do not get adequate exposure in all areas of health care setti ng.Hence producti on of incompetent students who cannot deliver quality care.
3. Lack of qualifi ed teachers and understaffi ng: Majority of nursing insti tuti ons in India are not following the eligibility criteria set by the regulatory bodies for recruitment of faculti es and are under staff ed.
in order to overcome these issues, there is a need for important stakeholders to work together so that we can hope for quality educati on.
