Select bibliography (101 items)
An important theme of this module is that people learn best by acting as 'reflectivepractitioners' ie: when they are inquisitive, self learning and self-developing. This modeldoes not sit well with the prescription of 'required texts'. This is my selection of reading, based on my own interests, interpretations and prejudices. You may well wish to find yourown.
You will notice that there is a balance here between (i) 'classics' in the field and (ii)contemporary works (n.b: the most interesting, thought provoking books may notnecessarily be the most 'up to date'); (iii) academic works and (iv) practitioner texts; (v)'demanding' pieces and (vi) popular works; (vii) general books in applied Social Scienceand (viii) specialist studies of a particular aspect of MD.
Because MD is such an eclectic subject, you will find books which adopt a wide range ofperspectives: learning and development; organisational behaviour and analysis; socialpsychology; micro-sociology; philosophy of knowledge; social anthropology, psychologyand management science. This diversity emphasises the 'humanistic' nature of the subjectand reflects the richness of cultural understanding which sophisticated senior(international) managers themselves display.
I hope that this selection of reading addresses the canon of work but it has no claim to becomprehensive. If you find other references which you think are stimulating and helpful, please tell other students and your tutor. This will certainly give you 'plus points' and youwill have the satisfaction of helping your fellow students and those who come after you.
DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY. OBVIOUSLY YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ
12/22
05/29/18 BLDE706 Management Development | University of Westminster
ALL OF THESE BOOKS to succeed on the course, only a reasonable proportion. I have onlyread a sample, myself.
Do reflect on your reading strategy –how you choose and interpret books? It will tell you alot about your own managerial interests, values and identity, and your self-defined needsas a manager. Are you interested in concepts and ideas as tools for diagnosis and thinkingor do you want practical frameworks for action? What does 'practical' and 'relevant' meanto you?
One other thing, do not assume that the latest texts are the best texts. The intellectualdevelopment of a subject doesn't work like that. To get a new perspective it is often usefulto read an old book!
In classifying the main books in this field I have divided them up into a number of headingswhich are intended to be helpful. Because I recognise that you have limited time I haveprovided bibliographic notes to help you become discriminating in your choice of reading(and you are welcome to disagree with these comments).
ESSENTIAL TEXTS (10 items)
Human resource management: a contemporary approach - 2014Book | Essential | A general HRM textbook with a very good introductory chapter by
Doyle on MD which introduces a ‘unified systems’ approach. How useful do you think it is?
Leadership and management development: developing tomorrow's managers - KevinDalton, 2010
Book | Essential | You must make up your own minds about the value of my recentlypublished book. It is meant to be an up to date, user-friendly guide to the field as a whole. It also tries to be provocative and teasing, critical and theoretical yet practically relevantto professionals. It deliberately challenges you to decide where you stand on the bigissues.
Exploring human resource management - David Simmonds, Christine Porter, CecilieBingham, 2006
Book | Essential | My two chapters are intended as a quick way into MD and the relatedsubject of OD. I hope they help you.

Book | Essential | Up to date and very thorough.
Management and leadership development - Christopher Mabey, Tim Finch-Lees, 2008Book | Further | A difficult read because it attempts a sophisticated rendering of the
subject area. Does presume a good knowledge of Social Science. However rewards youreffort with deep insight. Sophisticated.
Management development: strategies for action - Alan Mumford, Jeffrey Gold, 2004Book | Further | A major book (recently updated) which dramatically re-works earlier
editions and tries to be comprehensive in its coverage of the MD field. Some claim that it isa bit ‘dry’ and superficial in parts and a little light on the behavioural aspects…but makeyour own judgements, I’m biased because they are competitors with my own book.
Employee development practice - Jim Stewart, Financial Times Management, 1999Book | Essential | Performs the useful service of linking MD to organisational analysis as
a much needed antidote to the tendency of HRD professionals to ‘technicise’ MD.
Management development: strategy and practice - Jean Woodall, Diana Winstanley, 1998Book | Essential | A good starting point, providing an overview of the subject as a whole
and a framework for appreciating the core concepts involved. A bit ageing but still good.

Article | Further | Excellent overview of MD with a plea for more sophisticatedorganisational models as the basis for future MD.
Management research - Mark Easterby-Smith, Richard Thorpe, Paul R. Jackson, 2012Book | Further | Useful as an introduction to research/ evaluation methods and
philosophies; has a bias towards qualitative, interpretive approaches which is no bad thingto my mind.
Organization development: behavioral science interventions for organization improvement- Wendell L. French, Cecil Bell, c1999
Book | Further | The classic work on this subject. A bit descriptive but professional.
The handbook of leadership development evaluation - Kelly Hannum, Jennifer Martineau,
14/22

very good. A compendium of different views on a difficult subject.
Managing learning - Christopher Mabey, Paul Iles, 2000Book | Further | A very good collection of ‘readings’ by the ‘good and the great’ in the
field on key themes in the areas of learning, development and change. Something foreveryone here.
The lessons of experience: how successful executives develop on the job - Morgan W.McCall, Michael M. Lombardo, Ann M. Morrison, c1988
Book | Further | Good insightful book that goes beyond the quick fix and asks awkwardquestions about who we are developing and how people really learn to do something asnebulous as ‘managing’. We still don’t have the answers. Ever-green despite it’s age.
Managers not MBAs: a hard look at the soft practice of managing and managementdevelopment - Henry Mintzberg, 2005
Book | Further | Controversial …and stimulating, if daunting.
Gower handbook of management development - Alan Mumford, 1991Book | Further | A bit ageing but a good starting point for all the themes we cover.
Leadership and management for HR professionals - Keith Porter, Paul Smith, Roger Fagg,Peter W. Winfield, 2006 [i.e. 2005

Book | Good introduction to key themes with copious use of research studies andintegration of their insights into the textual commentary.
Human resource development: perspectives, strategies and practice - Jim Stewart, JimMcGoldrick, 1996
Book | Further | A useful attempt to combine OA theory with HRD practice. Some contributions specifically related to MD; quite difficult sometimes, but usually rewardingbecause of its ‘synoptic’ approach.
Management development - Michel Syrett, Jean Lammiman, ExpressExec, 2003Book | Further | Published by ‘Economist Books’, a very practical, ‘investment
conscious’ approach to the study with many international examples.
Changing patterns of management development - A. W. J. Thomson, 2001Book | Further | An empirically based overview of the key themes and trends in MD;
well worked, empirical data with high-level analysis.
Writers on leadership - John Van Maurik, 2001Book | Further | A very good place to start if you are interested in theories and
reflections on leadership. Very ‘bite sized’ entries. Something to read on the train goinghome.

Book | Further | If you are looking for something that goes beyond managementformulae to offer to’ tell it as it is’ about the processes of managerial behaviour, then thisis it. SPECIALIST TEXTS (3 items)Those students who come from outside Europe and the USA will probably notice that thetexts cited above seem very oriented to the Western experience. This reflects the balancein the literature of this young subject at this particular point in history. In future, with there-alignment of world economic forces, it is likely that the experience of developingmanagers in other parts of the world will redress the imbalance. The good news forparticipants from developing countries is that there is much virgin soil to be upturned, sorecording your experience could be valuable in adding to the growth of this subject.
At present, all that can be offered to counter balance the ethno-centrism of the literatureare the following texts which are known to the me (although not always read).
