FIRST CONVOCATION – A MEMORABLE DAY

'The Convocation address by

Padmabhushan Dr. Deviprasad Shetty, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore.

Dr. Deviprasad Shetty, a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Director Narayana Hradayala was

the Chief Guest. In his convocation address, he emphasized the need of cutting the cost by using

low cost technologies which will make health care services affordable to poor patients.

A total of 89 students received post graduate degrees and diplomas in faculty of Medicine and

Medical illustration. Gold Medals were awarded to five meritorious post-graduates.

The event was graced by Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, BLDE University,

Members of the Board of Management, Academic Council and Officers of the University and

Constituent College.

On 17th February, 2013, Rani Channamma University of Belgaum conferred, posthumously, Honorary Doctorate [Honoris Causa] to our founder of the Medical College, Late Shri B.M.Patil, for his contribution in the field of education, social development and harmony. Mrs Kamalabai,

wife of Sri B.M.Patil received the honours.

DOCTOR OF SCIENCEProf M.I. Savadatti former Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, Eminent Physicist of International repute and well-known educationist, was conferred with Honorary Doctorate [Honoris Causa] by Rani Channamma University Belgaum on 17th February 2013 for his contributions in the field of physics and popularizing science. His contributions to field of education was acknowledged. He, as a Board of Management Member of our University has been a guiding force.



Dr. Arun C. Inamdar, Professor and Head Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, was honoured with Honorary Membership of European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology. He was also invited as Visiting Professor for Paediatric Dermatology by University

of Chicago, USA on March 8, 2013

Empowering WomenAn awareness programme was organized for all the women staff members and students. As a

part of the programme, Mrs. Shyamala Varadarajan, Chairperson of ‘Sphurty’ NGO, delivered a lecture on Prevention of Sexual Harassment & Abuse At Workplace, on March 18, 2013.

Nirbhaya: Self defense training classes for women staff members and students was inaugurated on Feb 12, 2013.

BLDE UNIVERSITY - ONE UNIVERSITY AND MANY OPPORTUNITIES

I consider it as my privilege to write a brief note on my Alma Mater –BLDE University.

BLDE University status was conferred in 2008 to Shri B M Patil Medical College for its high standard of quality education and research over two decades. The campus spread over 53 acres in the heart of the historic city of Bijapur was donated by Smt Bangaramma Sajjan, and hence the name “Smt Bangaramma Sajjan Campus”

The college boasts of possessing a well equipped departments and state of art library with a 1000 bedded hospital providing emergency, primary to tertiary care services. Students from various parts of the country and abroad are pursuing studies at graduate and postgraduate level in health sciences. We have renowned staff, teachers, philosophers and administrators.

2nd May 2011, recollecting my first day in the college, I came here with so much apprehension and confused mind. But today as a Post graduate in the department of Pediatrics, I have no regrets. Teachers and staff in the hospital in general and in department of pediatrics in particular have been so welcoming and ever ready to clear our slightest queries. In spite of my busy and hectic schedule, it feels good to be having an enjoyable working atmosphere. Being monitored for every procedure and yet given a free hand, it gives a sense of security and instills confidence in me.

The stay in the hostel has very been comfortable with spacious well ventilated rooms, hostel staff with good hospitality and good mess, although, initially I could not relish the food.

Our university has a huge play ground, tennis/badminton courts and a jogger’s lane created for fitness freaks. Amidst thick green trees is situated Lord Ganesha’s temple with a serene environ-ment keeping me optimistic and giving me courage to face highs and lows of life.

All in all, it has been a wonderful experience so far and I call it a HOME AWAY FROM HOME.

Activities of NSS Unit of the University

NSS Unit of the University conducted mega Hepatitis B vaccination camp sponsored by the University. 450 Nursing students were vaccinated on 20/02/13,202 MBBS students of our college were also vaccinated on 25/03/13. They have also planned to vaccinate Non-Teaching staff and Class 4 employees of our Hospital shortly.

Research Collaboration with Emory University, USA

There is an ongoing research collaboration with Emory University. USA In 2010 one of our faculty member Dr. Shailaja Patil, Professor of Community Medicine was selected for fellowship “Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases in India” at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA through Centre for Chronic Disease and Control(CCDC), New Delhi. After completion of her Fellowship at Emory, the collaboration continued when BLDE University and CCDC, New Delhi jointly organized a Research Methodology workshop for medical faculty of Northern Karnataka Medical Colleges in July 2011. Dr. K. M. Venkat Narayan, Professor Global Health Department, Emory University, visited on November 12, 2012, where he gave a guest lecture.

Dr. Patil's research project titled “Home Environment and adolescent unhealthy weight status a School based study in Bijapur” was awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA. This study was developed by Dr. Shailaja Patil during her fellowship at Emory under the mentorship of Dr. Solveig A. Cunningham. The study was carried out NIH great success in 2012, during which period Cunningham visited BLDE University to help to start the research project. The follow-up of this study will be done in June-July 2013 by the Global Health Institute team from Emory University. Prof. Shiva Halli, Professor from Manitoba University was instrumental in organizing interactions, whose continuous efforts have been taking forward the University collaborations.

Cunningham from Emory University was awarded a NIH Fogarty Global Health Fellowship to work with Public Health Foundation of India(PHFI) at our University, under the mentorship of Dr. Shailaja Patil. Nida is working towards strengthening, Emory-BLDEU Collaborations, building research capacity and carrying out her research project on "Home Enviornment and Nutrition transition among youth"

Research Collaboration with Jadavpur University, KolkataCollaborative Research Project "Possible Environmental Pollution and Health Effects from

Arsenic & Fluoride in North Karnataka" Between Jadavapur University, Kolkata and BLDE University, Bijapur.

BLDE University Research Team interacted with Prof. Dipankar Chakraborty, Director, SOES, Jadavapur University, Kolkata prepared the research plan and conducted pilot study sample survey. The project will be carried out in three stages.

AMARANTHINE – 2013 -Annual Sports DayAnnual Sports meet day was celebrated on 8th March 2013. Col. R. Balaji, Principal, Sainik

School, Bijapur was the chief guest. Dr. M.S. Biradar, Principal Sri. B.M. Patil Medical College, presided the function. Guests of Honour were Dr. B.G. Mulimani Vice Chancellor, BLDE University Dr. J.G. Ambekar, Registrar BLDE University and Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha, Vice Principal.

Around 650 students and faculty participated in all the events. Chief Guest of the function distributed the prizes and mementoes to the prize winners. During this academic year total 18 events were conducted for both boys and girls. Our students also participated in sports activities of five other Universities.

Graduation Day

Graduation Day “Panacea 2013” for graduates from 2007 batch of Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, Bijapur, was celebrated on March 16, 2013.

Dr. Vijayalaxmi Balekundri, Pediatric Cardiologist of international repute from Jaydeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore, was the Chief Guest and Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. B. G. Mulimani of BLDE University, presided over the function. Principal Dr. M. S. Biradar welcomed the gathering and Dr. Manpreet Kaur, Professor of OBGY, administered the Hippocratic Oath.

The Chief Guest of the function, in her soulful speech, underlined the importance of dedication, honesty, sincerity, confidence, punctuality, human touch with sympathy towards patients and good conduct for young doctors. She shared her personal experiences with graduates and inspired them to uphold the noble profession..

The Chief Guest distributed the mementos to the graduates and awards to Best Outgoing Male and Female students.

Students shared their experiences of past five and half years on the campus. Dr. M. B. Patil, Professor of Surgery shared experience of teachers with the students on 2007 batch.

Dr Chandrashekhar R Bidri, Former DeanMBBS, MD, DCH, DDV, DV&DC, FCPS, FRSH(LON) FCCP, FICA(USA)

(1931 - 2013)

Prof. C. R. Bidri, former dean of the Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, passed away on 2nd

February 2013 due to prolonged age-related illness.

Dr. C. R. Bidri, son of renowned politician Shri Ramappa Bidri of Bilgi, completed schooling,

joined Grant Medical College, Mumbai to pursue MBBS and completed double post-graduation

in Paeditrics and Dermatology. He went to London, UK and then to USA for higher studies and

clinical expertise.

He returned to home town Bijapur to serve as Pediatrician. He associated with many

organizations like Lions Club, Rotary Club etc and educational institutions for the cause of social

service. He was instrumental in establishing Indian Medical Association Branch in Bijapur.

In 1986, BLDE Association under the stewardship of Shri B. M. Patil established Medical

College; he was invited to join as Dean. He along with the Principal guided firm footing and

growth of the Medical College in right direction. It was his efforts which helped the Medical

College to earn permanent recognition from Medical Council of India in 1991.

He was popular teacher among the students and patient-friendly paediatrician for the patients

of Medical College and Hospital. The institute has lost a great mentor, a guide and iron-man, who

stood firmly by students & faculty in difficult times.
