About the Author
• My name is Kellaine Cross, I am a graduate student at Tougaloo College. I am an avid lover of dance, I started taking ballet and jazz classes at the age of four until I was twelve. Because I started taking dance classes early on; I have a love and an appreciation for all forms of dance. Dance helped me focus when I was in school, even now I dance when I am under stress.

Introduction
• Dance is an important creative outlet for children. Children begin dancing as early as a few months of age. This eBook will show different types of dances children might be interested in. Dance is an excellent form of expression; dance has physical, emotional, social and educational benefits.

Different Genres of Dance
• There are many genres of dance out there in the world. We will focus on the five primary genres in the United States.
Ballet
An artistic dance form performed to music using
precise and highly formalized set steps and
gestures.
Classical ballet, which originated in
Renaissance Italy and established its
present form during the 19th century, is
characterized by light, graceful, fluid
movements and the use of pointe shoes.

Contemporary
A dance performance genre that developed
during the mid twentieth century and has since
grown to become one of the dominant genres for
formally trained dancers throughout the world,
with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and
Europe.

Jazz
A dance form or dance
that is matched to the
rhythms and techniques of
jazz music, developed by
American blacks in the
early part of the 20th
century.

Hip Hop
Refers to street dance styles primarily performed to
hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-
hop culture.
It includes a wide range of styles
primarily breaking, locking, and
popping which were created in the

Ballroom
Formal social dancing in couples, popular as a
recreation and also as a competitive activity. The
ballroom dance repertoire includes dances
developed from old European folk dances such as
the waltz, Latin American dances such as the

century origin such as the foxtrot and quickstep.
