Expert Facilitator: Keith Tyler Smith DirectorLearning@work After 17 years in TV production as a producer and director with TVNZ, Keith made the shift into tertiary education, by taking up the role as Programme Leader for TV Production at NZ Broadcasting School at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). Seven years later, the opportunity to lead a newly established eLearning and Web Support team came up, following a successful eLearning pilot initiative with a cross-discipline team, who worked together on a Graduate Diploma course in eCommerce. This role included staff training and development in the technical, design and pedagogic aspects of eLearning and the development of new eLearning resources, programmes and courses.

In 2004, Keith took up the role of eLearning Projects Manager for the Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ). In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the development of more than 40 workplace-based online courses and programmes and has managed collaborative online developments with a wide range of organisations including the seven TANZ member institutions, the ASURE meat inspection SOE, Public Service Training Organisation (Learning State), Workbase Literacy Trust and Flexible Learning Network.

A major project he lead was a network of provision pilot, that linked teachers and learners across the six TANZ institutions using Moodle’s networking capability. This pilot was designed to show how the Moodle Networking technology (MNet) would enable the sharing of courses, students and teachers between six geographically distributed ITP institutions.

As part of his TANZ project leadership role, he was asked in 2008 to help Otago Polytechnic establish a Work-Based Learning pilot for the Bachelor of Applied Management.

Keith and TANZ parted company at the end of 2010 and set up his eLearning development company Learning@Work Ltd. He continues to work with Otago Polytechnic on the WBL pilot. Keith has a Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications from CPIT and a Master of Education (Online Education) from the University of Southern Queensland.

9.50 - 10.30 CASE STUDY Training tools and technology: Key trends, challenges and opportunities - Airways New Zealand, the story so farMillennium learners are our first truly digital natives who have grown up using smart technologies. Their expectations as learners are - available anywhere anytime, flexible study options, a personalised learning experience and to be part of a socially connected learning community. They are also less likely to commit long term to one career and will quickly move onto the next opportunity if the current environment does not meet their expectations. In order to attract the best and brightest into the aviation industry, and more importantly retain them, it is important to understand the DNA of our future workforce and provide a learning environment aligned to their expectations. ‘Airways Knowledge Online’ is the digital ecosystem developed by Airways in response to this challenge. In this presentation, Sharon will share:• The journey to date• A preview of tools in use and those under development• The future trends for Air Traffic Control training

There is No Quick Fix: Developing the Right Learning Module for your Audience NeedsEmbracing the full potential of Blended Learning can profoundly strengthen the scope and effectiveness of an organisation’s training and development function, but this expanse of possibility may feel like it unlocks a Pandora’s box of new variables and challenges. The aim may remain the same, to build your people’s skills, knowledge or attitude, to foster self-awareness and reflective work practices, or to improve technical ability or cultivate soft skills – but the answer is anything but one-size-fits-all.

In designing a successful programme, a skilled practitioner must engage with the complexities of different motivations, personalities, competencies, generational perspectives and learning backgrounds. But how do you strike the right balance with so many variables? And why do some practitioners talk about the need to “effectively engage Generation Y” as if they were not already a part of the fabric of working society and present in the classroom?

Masterclass participants will investigate the definition of Blended Learning, and how it can be applied to different learning journeys. Attendance will provide the opportunity to brainstorm with professional peers facing similar challenges. Participants will review case studies, and investigate the most effective learning approaches to their own people. They will actively discover the most work-able solutions to widespread challenges faced by learning and development professionals also take away valuable tools.

• Uncover effective blended learning implementation strategies for developing hard vs. soft skills

• Establish effective engagement strategies for a range of learners, factoring in variables such as age group, behavioural styles and ‘learning attitude’

• Gauge effective yet simple learning delivery methods and determine possible improvements or virtual equivalents

• Determine the most pragmatic and effective solutions to keep the learning alive

• Discover how to create interactive social learning networks using a range of forums and platforms

• Assess the best possible continuous improvement strategies for your blended learning portfolio

• Evaluate ‘edutainment’ and playful learning strategies and assess how they can be implemented in your setting
