What is Forest School?
“Forest School is an inspirational process that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-
esteem through hands on learning experiences in a woodland or natural
environment with trees.”

The principles of Forest School
1. Forest School sessions are frequent and it is a long-term process, at least 6 week blocks.
2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment .
3. Forest School is a holistic approach developing resilience, confidence, independence and creative thinking.
4. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
5. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners.
6. Forest school uses• Play• Planning/observation/next steps for learning• Scaffolding skill development, problem solving
and communication.
Developing new skillsChildren will learn lots of new skills such as using
tools. Whittling a stick to toast a brioche!
Co-operating and communicatingChildren will complete activities and take part in
play that will involve working with others and finding ways to get along.
Leading their own learningPlay is how children learn. In Forest School we
observe their interests and provide resources and activities to further their learning.
