Staron – the next generation in solid surfacing. For designersseeking beauty, versatility, and performance, Staron out-classesall other solid surfaces. A range of Staron sinks and bowls canalso be seamlessly integrated into the surfaces for an evenmore dramatic effect.

beauty, versatility,functionality

26

Staron can be thermoformed tocreate dramatic sweeping curves.

BEAUTYStaron’s thermoforming capability allows it tobe formed into any shape, enabling sweepingcurves for unique designs. Through sublimation,Staron can have corporate logos, signage anddecorative designs embedded into the surface, without any loss of performance of the material.

Staron’s Dazzling White design is translucent, socan be backlit to create stunning visual effects.

27

The joints of this Staron internet desk (below) arevirtually invisible: giving the successful impressionthat this complex but elegant shape has beenformed from a single piece of material.

VERSATILITYStaron has achieved a very high standardof fire resistance with the Euro class Baccreditation, allowing Staron to bespecified within airports and other criticalpublic buildings. Staron has also passedthe ISO 16933 based bomb blast testand is classed as compliant with thestringent requirements of the UK’sDepartment for Transport’s ASIADdocument for the wall panelling systemsused in UK airports.

Staron is NSF-51 food safe and has a widerange of designs which hold the SCSrecycled material content certification. This means that Staron is workingresponsibly to minimise the environmentaleffect of its manufacturing process.Staron’s capability to be repaired in theevent of damage caused by seriousimpact is another environment benefit.

28

FUNCTIONALITYStaron can be joined together with inconspicuousseams, allowing incredible designs as well as a joinwhere bacteria cannot develop. As it is a solid surface, designs run unvaryingly throughout its thickness, allowing carving, grooves and cut-outs. Staron is alsoinert, non-toxic and non-porous, making it easy toclean and keep hygienic. This makes it an idealmaterial for washrooms, laboratories and foodpreparation and eating areas.

CASE STUDIES

49

The design brief was a tremendouschallenge. The plinth had to support thearmature for the Stegosaurus withoutactually touching it, eliminating the riskof vibration or impact movement.

50

CASE STUDY

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMAfter visiting Blackheath’s Staron exhibition stand at the 100Percent Design Show, the Natural History Museum’sin-house designer, Gemma Smith, worked with us and award-winning design, build and fit out company, Paragon Creative.

York-based Paragon Creative was commissioned to create aplinth which would house the most complete Stegosaurusskeleton in the world. The dinosaur, on display at London’sNatural History Museum, was discovered in 2003 in WyomingUS and existed around 150 million years ago.

In total, the armature and skeleton weighs 900kg. Paragon’sProduction Design and Solid Surface facility designed an internalindependent steel frame inside the outer plinth, which sits onbespoke shock absorbent feet. The outer plinth then surroundsand covers this inner plinth with no contact what so ever. Thisouter plinth is covered in two colours of Staron Solid Surface(Sanded Tundra and Sanded Stratus). Each layer has been CNCcut and fabricated to exact dimensions, which keeps thecontours precise and even, and ensures the structure of theplinth is strong enough to carry the weight of the Stegosaurus.

The whole plinth and Armature was then erected in Paragon’sSolid Surface workshop in York before being dismantled andshipped down to the Natural History Museum and installed onsite behind tight security.

Paragon also built a Staron Solid Surface interpretation table, incorporatingreplicas of the dinosaur supplied by Propshop and Graphics and AV by theNatural History Museum.

MERTHYR TYDFIL COLLEGEMerthyr Tydfil College needed reception counters for the mainentrance and each department entrance, as well as food servicecounters and cash desks for the coffee shop and refrectory areas.

The Staron design: Tempest Zenith was chosen as it bestreflected the appearance of the shale rock that makes upa large part of the geology of the Merthyr Tydfil area.

Each of the reception desks were machined with a CNC routerto allow Bright White Staron to be inlaid flush into the Zenithdesign to provide location signage in both Welsh and English. This work, while intricate, provided bold and clear signs that areeasily cleaned and will stay looking as good as new.

The project architect was Boyes Rees of Cardiff and the maincontractor was Interserve. The reception counters weremanufactured by Limebright of Newport Gwent and the serviceand coffee shop surfaces were manufactured by Counterlineof Liverpool.

Staron’s design features were utilisedto their full; hygienic and easy to cleanseamless surfaces with strongconstruction and great looks!

GUY’S HOSPITALFor the completion of its main entrance refurbishment in 2011,Guy’s Hospital in London wanted to recreate the London skylineinside its public areas.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust commissionedthe design partnership Artinsite to shoot three panoramaphotographs featuring iconic buildings from around the hospital’ssite at London Bridge.

The images were selected to pick up the colours of the Trust’sway-finding scheme and positioned to make best use of thethree wall elevations. The images were digitally printed ontodurable and hygienic class 1 fire rated laminate / MDF compositepanels to satisfy all building regulations.

These panels were produced to a maximum height of 4.5 metresand ranged from 12 to 20 metres in length. These impressivedisplays of famous London scenes are designed to put visitorsto Guy’s Hospital at ease, by creating a familiar visualenvironment with a great sense of space.

Blackheath worked as part of the team alongside Artinsite andthe supplier to produce stunning artwork which has won muchcritical acclaim since its installation.

“Blackheath were very helpful andsourced the different aspects ofproduction for us - their knowledge ofthe industry is impressive. Blackheathwere true partners in that they took onthe responsibility for getting the projectright - for us and for Guy’s Hospital.”Louisa Williams, Artinsite

STOURBRIDGE COLLEGEDuring 2015, Stourbridge College Library was completelyrefurbished. For this project, we worked with commercialinteriors and retail display fit out company Apex Design Ltdas designers, contractors and installers.

Staron Bright White 12mm solid surfacing material was used witha lime green high pressure laminate to create the circular surfacesfor the internet and email access points within the Library.

Staron Bright White was selected, as it is readily available fromBlackheath Products: a crucial consideration for any contractorwhen the project lead time is tight. It is also hygienic, very easy toclean and hard wearing. Its solid colour also gives it the flexibilityto be formed into circles (and any other shape) seamlessly.
