WHY BLACKETT HOMES


KNOCKDOWN & REBUILD

Paul and Michelle Cains had been living in their 70s-built Curtin home for around four years when they decided it was time to renovate. Originally planning to extend the living areas and renovate the outdated kitchen, the pair began visiting

local displays and searching for the appropriate tradespeople. However, after looking at quotes for the

job they soon realised that renovating is not necessarily the cheaper option, and that for only a slightly

higher investment the couple could have a brand new house.

We all want to feel comfortable and at peace within our own homes, which is why the perfect home for you should reflect and accommodate your individual lifestyle. If you’re considering upgrading your existing home, Blackett Homes has a pleasant surprise for you.


What Paul and Michelle didn’t initially realise was that

they didn’t need to relocate themselves in order to get

that new home. “The big advantage for us with the

knockdown is that we could stay in a great area,”

Michelle explains “We have friends in the street and

in the neighbourhood, family that are close by. Now

we’re still a part of our community, and we can

have a new home.”

Once the concept of a knockdown/rebuild entered

their minds, Paul and Michelle began scouring Canberra’s

display homes searching for the perfect builder for the job.

“We looked at so many display homes,” Michelle explains “Some of

which didn’t match our lifestyle and some of which didn’t match our

price range. We narrowed it down to three builders, but what it really

came down to was that we were able to build a strong connection

with Blacketts.”

From the very beginning the Cains were pleasantly surprised by the

depth of service they received. Rather than being asked to meet at

the office to obtain a quote, Blackett Homes Sales Manager Rick Meir

visited their home for a casual drink on the back deck, allowing him

to view the block first-hand and immediately give the Cains an idea

of price, logistics and how to get started. “It was great and just so

relaxed. It didn’t ever feel like it was too much trouble,” says Paul.

“We felt really comfortable and confident that this was a good choice

for us.” adds Michelle.

Homeowners looking at making renovations or extensions to their

existing home are often under the assumption that a knockdown/

rebuild would cause a major disruption to their life. In reality, the

experienced team at Blackett Homes have a proven track record of

achieving an outstanding final product in an extremely timely fashion,

with the entire building process running like clockwork.

One month after signing the contract the Cains moved out of their

old house, and only five months later they returned to their brand

new home.

“Blackett’s service was all inclusive. You move out, you dig yourplants

out of your garden and you walk out the door. They put up a fence and

do the rest of it.” Michelle explains “Part of what you’re paying for is

someone else to manage the stress and coordination of it.”

Blackett Homes is a locally owned and operated family business,

beginning in 1981 as a joint venture between brothers Stephen and

David Howarth, together with David’s wife Marilyn. Having recently

celebrated a hugely successful 30 years in the industry, Blackett Homes

have now bought on board David & Marilyn’s sons Geoff and Matt,

ensuring the next 30 years in business will be equally as exciting.

With such a wealth of experience under their belt, Blackett Homes

are big enough to employ permanent contractors, helping to ensure

a smooth-running building process. However, the company is also

small enough to keep their finger on the pulse of each job they handle,

meaning that nothing falls through the cracks.

“That was one of the things we really noticed, you could rely on them. If

they said it was going to happen, it was going to happen.” Michelle said.

The other pleasant surprise for Paul and Michelle was that they were

offered real flexibility when choosing their design. Whilst they fell in

love with the original display home, they were offered the opportunity

to tweak the design in order to make it their own.

“Some builders out there have their display home and they just build

to their plan. If you ask to change it, the answer is no. But Blacketts are

really happy to be flexible and work with you.” Michelle explains.

Paul and Michelle made multiple changes to their home’s original

design, including additional storage space, an extended living area,

raised ceilings, additional sliding doors to the dining area opening on to

a small deck, as well as modifications to their outdoor entertaining area.

Sales Manager for Blackett Homes, Rick Meir understands that no

single design is suited perfectly to everyone.

“Homes are like people, they’re individual. So we really push that

flexibility.” Rick said.

“Unlike a lot of project home builders, we’re flexible, because we do

have the resources here internally to make changes and make them

cost effective. We see more and more people are surprised by that.”

In any one year, Blackett Homes build between 40 and 60 private

homes. Having been in operation for over 30 years, the team is well

rehearsed in delivering what they promise, and have left a trail of

extremely satisfied clients to prove it.
