This year Blackduck's foreign exchange student is Edda Coordes. She is seventeen years old and was born on December 17, 1975. Besides her parents back in Germany, Edda has one older married sister.
Edda is from Norden, Germany which even though it's about the same size as Blackduck, their school is dijferent from ours in many ways. The tests are not true ffalse, there is not multiple choice - only essay questions, and they take only 1 to 3 tests per semester for every subject. They also have to take two foreign languages. English is required and the students have a choice of French, Latin, Russian, and later in school, Greek. Edda became a foreign exchange student because she likes studying foreign languages, plus she has always wanted to come to America.
In Germany, they don't have any extracurricular activities, but students must belong to clubs outside of school where they have to pay fees. School is from 7:50A.M. to 1:00 P.M. with no hot lunch served. Every day they have dijferent classes in a dijferent order. There are no school buses, students ride public transportation free until 11th grade.
She also likes American TV, movies (especially science fiction), and rock musical American artists Genesis, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Meat Loaf. Her favorite food is Italian, including Pizza and spaghetti. She especially likes our special events here like Prom, Homecoming, Concerts, etc. Some of the social events in Germany are going to the movies, class parties, and they have dances like the Prom, but they are only for seniors. These dances are called, "Abslupball."
In Germany Edda likes rock stars "Diefautastisehen Vier'' and "Guuchenr Freiheit," classic music, classic rock, and musicals. The weather in Norden is similar to Blackduck's except it gets colder here!
Edda added a lot to our German classes and to our understanding of another culture. Thanks Edda!

''1eacl.e~& ol tl.e This year's "Teacher of the Year" is Mary Lea Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson teaches Physical Education. She chose this as her major because she has "always liked activity and enjoys the competition of all sports." Mrs. Anderson graduated from Chaska High School. She later graduated from Bemidji State University where she has also earned 63 graduate credits. She has taught in Blackduck since August, 1970. Some highlights of her teaching years are starting the girls sports program in 1973 and developing life-long friendships with students.
Mrs. Anderson and her husband, Scott, have been friends since their freshman year in high school. They were married in August of 1970. They have two boys, Lance, who is 16 and a sophomore, and Jay who is 13 and in seventh grade.
Mrs. Anderson is involved in many extracurricular activities. She is the coach for the Junior Varsity volleyball, cofacilitator of the Site-base Team, Youth Development coordinator, volunteer weight room supervisor, and P.O.P.S. Committee member. She has been instrumental in bringing C.A.R.E. and P.O.P.S. to Blackduck. When asked why she thought these were worth her time she said, "I feel all of these are part of the solution. I try not to dwell on the problems, but to put my energy into the solutions." Mrs. Anderson has showed her schoolfcommunity spirit in many other ways as she has been a church youth group advisor, Sunday School teacher, cheerleader advisor, Summer Recreation supervisor, Summer Baseball coach and Baseball Board member. She has also coached basketball, and track and field.
38 Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Anderson's "wish list" for our school district is that the school be full of posters, banners, floor mats, wall mats, etc. promoting a chemically free lifestyle. Everywhere people would look, there would be positive messages! She would like for such statements as "this is boring," "I can't," or "this is stupid" not to be used. She wishes that all students would be involved in some type of extracurricular activity and work to their full capacity in all academic classes.
When asked how she felt about being chosen as "Teacher of the Year" Mrs. Anderson said, "It was an honor." She feels the roles of teachers are to guide, encourage, commend, direct, advise, and challenge the students. Her goal as a teacher is "to do the best possible job I can every day." Congratulations, Mrs. Anderson on an honor well deserved.

90 The Perfect Mix
Lilte many of us, /. Bennett is not only
academically inclined, but also involved in many extra~rricular
activities.
The more the variety, the better the mix!
Many students, including J. Knutson, mix worlc with school.
J. Gross, N. Bennett, and P. Sorquist enjoy a truly perfect mix ... Monster Coolcies!
-~
Getting ready to be moved into, the new school is going up!
M. Schram and G. Martin usually have a 1111de mix of opinions between them.
Ms. Rivard and Mr. Fenslce did a little mixing of their own ... they got married!
"The Perfect Mix" was the theme chosen for this year's yearbook for lots of reasons! We looked around the school and noticed the variety of people within our student population. We saw the new school starting to blend with the old school. With all the mixing of paint, color , and people, we thought, "Hey, we've got the perfect mix going here!"
With the old school going down and the new school going up, we got all mixed up in the hallways. Old halls were blocked off, and new halls weren't quite opened yet. A mix of new and old faces including construction workers were around. A mix of sounds and odors filled rooms as these construction workers did their things and we confronted a variety of temperatures in the classrooms! (I' he science rooms hit 87 degrees many days!)
Being in a smaller school, students can participate in many extra·curricular activities. A variety of after school interests kept us busy at nights, sometimes so busy we came to school with a wide range of enthusiasms. We've always been a mix of personalities, tastes, styles, interests, and activities. This year we added a few new organizations (Peer Tutoring, and a spring play) to keep us even more busy.
We really do have the perfect mix going here at Blackduck High.

Chemicals Aren't Right for Extracurriculars is a pro~ram focused on stucfent commitments to remam drug, tobacco, and alcohol free. The C.A.R.E. Core Group is in charge of planning meetings, activities, and being there for students to talk to. This year some changes were made in how C.A.R.E. works. Students were only given one week to sign a contract along with a short questionnaire. C.A.R.E. is being student run this year instead of by an advisor. Also, the emphasis on punishment was changed to encouragement, allowing students the opportunity to try again. C.A.R.E. has also changed their open grms to include those who have remained chemtcally free that night, not just those who have signed a contract. This change was made to provide a chemically free night to a larger group of students. C.A.R.E. has sponsored or helped sponsor man>' special activities including: Peer Tutoring, tnps to Buena Vista, a Gophers game, a Twins game, and a BSU Hockey game, open gyms after home ~mes, a P.O.P.S. assembly, a Benefit Q_uilt Raffle for Scott Poxleitner, and the Chemica] Use Prevention and Intervention Counselor.
