“A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart, oh, no, it’s curved like a road through mountains.” Tennessee Williams

our hearts are irrational, chaotic, powerful, passionate, pulsing with love and hate. our rational minds guide us down the straight line, the road that should be taken, the system that must

be followed. But our hearts take us on journeys of discovery and misadventure. the battle for dominance between chaos and order, savagery and civility makes for great theatre, and is central to our 2014 season.

Black Swan is proud to present a dynamic combination of emerging artists, familiar Western Australian talent and nationally acclaimed stars. on the heath Ledger stage we have three classics, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Seagull and As You Like It; an Australian world premiere about a very dusty day in WA aptly titled Dust, and two contemporary comedies, Laughter on the 23rd Floor and Gasp!.

Powerful women dominate the heath Ledger this year, as the ever beautiful Sigrid thornton brings her melancholy and grace to Blanche duBois, the scintillating greta Scacchi sizzles as Arkadina and the delightful Jovana miletic as rosalind dazzles from court to forest and back again.

in the Studio underground we celebrate the inaugural work of the Black Swan Lab with two new plays, one by chris isaacs, a member of Black Swan’s emerging Writers group, and the other by Aidan Fennessy, who won such acclaim for his play National Interest.

So wind your way through the brochure to see what delights the heath Ledger and the Studio underground hold for you, and you’ll see names like Ben elton, Anton chekhov, Alison van reeken, Stuart halusz, emily mcLean, Adam mitchell, chrissie Parrott and michael Loney, to name just a few. We are proud to bring artists of this calibre to the people of Western Australia. this season of drama is sexy, scintillating and downright hilarious, a cri de coeur to live our lives as fully as we can and to share them with strangers as well as with friends. So nestle into the beautiful seats at the State theatre centre, and wait for a moment of illusion, or perhaps a moment of truth.

thank you to all the stakeholders who have supported our success. Black Swan owes its ability to produce work of artistic vibrancy relevant to our community to the significant support of our corporate partners, donors, foundations and governments. most of all, we owe our success to the passionate commitment of all of you, our subscribers and patrons who join us on theatrical adventures time and again.

American realism at its nail-biting best.

BLANche, an aging Southern belle, impoverished and alcoholic, escaping lost illusions and faded glory, seeks shelter with her sister, Stella, in New orleans.

Stella and her husband, Stanley, live and love in a tiny apartment in a poor quarter of New orleans, where the inhabitants pulse with vitality and sensuality. Blanche’s arrival throws the couple into turmoil when Blanche, the dreamer, and Stanley, the realist, battle each other for Stella’s affections. When a sexually charged conflict erupts between Stanley and Blanche, it threatens to destroy Blanche’s tenuous grasp on sanity and the very fabric of Stella’s happiness.

Starring multi-award winning Australian actors, Sigrid thornton (Sea Change) and Nathaniel dean, and featuring some of Western Australia’s most acclaimed performers, this heartbreaking play will intoxicate you with its raw, dramatic power.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama, New York drama critics’ circle Award for Best Play and numerous other awards.

A great wind completely blankets Perth with red dust. Some believe that an apocalypse looms. But for others – a man and his young step-daughter, two

It’s 1953. senator mcCarthy is raising hell about ‘reds’ in show biz, and there’s “a wait list to get on the blacklist”.

But on the 23rd floor of New York’s rockefeller Plaza, the team behind The Max Prince Show is determined to keep the good times rolling. one-liners fly and

zingers ricochet off the walls as max Prince and his writers hold out against the suits who think the show’s too long – and far too smart!

Written by Neil Simon (one of the most oscar and tony Award-nominated writers of all time), and based on his time as one of Sid caesar’s comedy writers, the non-stop gags keep on rolling in this clever comedy about clever comedians.

Imagine a world in which the air we breathe is just another commodity like food and fuel. something that can be bought and sold according to

market forces. how much do you think you’d have to breathe?

thiS was the darkly comic premise on which Ben elton based his first play, the hilarious and critically acclaimed satirical comedy Gasping.

the play was first produced in 1990 at the theatre royal haymarket in London’s West end. it starred hugh Laurie and ran for a triumphant year and a half. Now Ben elton has revisited his original play and re-imagined it for a new century and a new country. this major rewrite relocates the story to an Australia grown giddy on the resources boom. it’s now called Gasp!. And it’s as relevant and as hil‘air’ious as ever.

Ben elton has written twelve bestselling books including Popcorn and Inconceivable, some of tV’s most popular comedy series (Blackadder, The Young Ones) as well as West end plays and the hit musical We Will Rock You.

Ambitious collaborations. daring audiences.

BLAck SWAN proudly presents the Black Swan Lab, a new initiative based in the Studio underground. in its inaugural year, the Black Swan Lab presents two world

premieres, providing dynamic opportunities for ambitious artistic collaborations. the Black Swan Lab is for those who are interested in taking risks on new plays, new collaborations, new artists and new paths. the Lab is a place to experience what happens when seasoned and emerging artists collaborate. it’s like a wonderful science experiment, as long as we don’t blow anyone up!

the Studio underground is flexible and versatile, enabling us to produce intense theatre experiences and have a range of different performances comfortably sit alongside each other in a diverse program. the space will also provide Black Swan with the opportunity to develop smaller productions that may be suitable for future touring.

the Black Swan Lab’s working environment enables emerging artists to explore the practices and infrastructure of a state theatre company and to shake them up a bit. Black Swan will provide a comprehensive support and mentoring program, but the Lab is collaborative, so we expect to learn as much from the emerging artists as they learn from us. We see it as an incredible opportunity for intergenerational mentoring.

if you have an appetite for new plays and work that pushes existing boundaries, are a theatre lover with a taste for adventure, and want to witness emerging artists grow and flex their muscles through collaborations with experienced colleagues, then the Black Swan Lab productions are perfect for you.

We invite you to join us in the Black Swan Lab for a journey into the unknown!

Kate CherryArtiStic director

Developing Emerging Artists

The identification of talented artists and the support and development of emerging Western Australian artists is a critical component of Black swan’s creative agenda. This allows Black swan to provide professional

pathways for artists at the beginning of their career and gives our audiences the opportunity to see and support the work of local talent as they work

towards establishing themselves on the national stage.

Apart from Black Swan’s emerging Writers group, which will continue with a new group of writers, Black Swan’s artist development programs in 2014 will feature:

emerging Artists Program

the emerging Artists Program is aimed at fostering talented, emerging Western Australian artists, including high potential directors, designers, writers, composers and actors. the program will provide access to training, mentoring and state-of-the-art theatre practice to facilitate learning and performance, including masterclasses and the opportunity to work with Black Swan’s Artistic director kate cherry and Black Swan’s experienced creative teams. Participating artists will also receive profiling opportunities.

the emerging Artists Program in 2014 will include: Joshua Brennan, Lawrie cullen-tait, charlotte devenport, chris donnelly, Brett dowson, Stuart halusz, chris isaacs, Jovana miletic, emily mcLean, William mcNeill, india mehta, cecelia Peters, rose riley, Lauren ross, grace Smibert, James Sweeny and gemma Willing.

"Adam Mitchell, perennially young and quintessentially hip, brings his expertise and insight to our new venture, the Black Swan Lab. Using all his theatrical nous

and collaborative genius, along with a touch of the mad scientist, Adam is set to stir things up with Chris’ new play Flood. I am thrilled that Chris emerges onto our stage

with a play about his generation, a group of friends in their 20s on a weekend getaway that goes really bad, really fast."

What is the cost of protecting your friends?

it is the summer of their lives. Six Perth friends, young, privileged and bullet-proof, are back together over the holidays to take a trip into the mid West. As they travel

deeper into the land, they edge closer to the dark heart of the Australian psyche. When something unexpected happens, their impulsive decisions have lethal consequences.

Which of your friends would be the best at keeping a secret? Who would crack first under pressure? And what lengths would you go to in order to protect ‘the group’?

Written by chris isaacs, co-creator of It’s Dark Outside (nominated for a 2013 helpmann Award) and member of Black Swan’s emerging Writers group, this bold new work explores how it is to live with the realities we choose to bury.

Black swan state Theatre Company is Western Australia’s Flagship Theatre Company and one of Australia’s foremost theatre companies.

SiNce its inception in 1991, Black Swan has earned both critical and popular acclaim for its world premiere productions and highly distinctive (re)interpretations of international theatre classics – all of which are infused

with the unique culture of Western Australia. these have included such landmark productions as Bran Nue Dae, Corrugation Road, The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea, Cloudstreet (Perth, Sydney, London and dublin seasons) The Odyssey, and more recently, The Sapphires (Perth, canberra, London and korea seasons).

under the leadership of Artistic director kate cherry, Black Swan has created the rio tinto Black Swan commissions, a commissioning program investing into WA’s creative future and showcasing Western Australian stories. the company also runs professional development programs for emerging Western Australian artists, including the emerging Writers group and emerging Artists and resident Artists programs.

Black Swan State theatre company has been a resident company in the State theatre centre of Western Australia since 2011. in its inaugural season in the State theatre centre, Black Swan presented the world premiere of Rising Water, the first piece written by tim Winton specifically for the stage. in the same year, Black Swan was the first Australian theatre company to broadcast a live stage performance, when Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by kate cherry, was broadcast in real time to audiences across regional Western Australia. Live broadcasts have since become an annual event for Black Swan, as part of the company’s annual regional touring and engagement programs.

sUpport BlACK sWAnthrough Black Swan’s Private giving Program, individuals support a range of Black Swan activities from production costs through to education programs to mentor and develop Western Australian designers and artists. this support allows Black Swan to deliver outstanding theatre performances to the Western Australian community, support creative talent and enrich the social and cultural vibrancy of our state.
