DOMESTIC.NATIVE.ROT-RESISTANT.NATIVE AND ROT-RESISTANT

Black Locust is a domestic tree species native to the Appalachian range, from Georgia to Pennsylvania. Due to its genetic composition, Black Locust is rot and pest-resistant in excess of 50 years with no treatment. Supported by decades of U.S. Forest Service data, Black Locust has proven itself to be a resilient hardwood that can withstand various altitudes, climates, and conditions. It is a quickly renewable tree, as it dually reproduces and matures rapidly.

ALTERNATIVE TO THE STANDARD

Domestic Black Locust is a sustainable alternative to endangered tropical hardwoods, chemically treated lumber, and decay prone wood species. The Rainforest Alliance lists Black Locust among the most preferred alternatives to tropical hardwoods for outdoor applications. The harvest of tropical hardwoods is unsustainable; transporting the wood to market is ecologically unfavorable. Black Locust serves as an alternative to pressure-treated lumber treated with a wide variety of Red List chemicals, which can leach into soils over time.

WORKING TOWARDZERO-WASTEBlack Locust Lumber, U.S.A. is a sustainable business that strives to maintain the most impeccable environmental standards in our progressive industry. Our philosophy is zero-waste. At our sawmill locations, we utilize 100% of the material from our Black Locust logs—from lumber to bark to sawdust.

As a custom sawmill, we are capable of utilizing every piece of lumber for different projects and products, depending on the aesthetic quality, allowing us to produce very little waste. The lumber that does not meet our Furniture, Premium, or No.1 Grade standards is used for agricultural and industrial products. Waste pieces from our precision cutting are used for samples. In the near future, excess fiber and sawdust will be used as biomass to power our bioenergy plant, allowing us to be an energy-independent sawmill. We will utilize all of our waste as bioenergy to power our mills.

In our sales offices, we implement power-saving measures, recycle all paper, and encourage our associates to keep desk plants to improve in-office air quality. All of our products are sourced and manufactured in the United States and are 100% Lacey Act Compliant. We also offer FSC-certified Black Locust.

ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS

As an environmental company, Black Locust Lumber, U.S.A. is proud to offer Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for our Black Locust products.

FSC is an international non-profit established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. There are numerous forests globally certified under FSC, including all Pennsylvania state lands. We offer FSC-certified Black Locust which has been harvested from Pennsylvania state lands, and it is tracked from harvest to manufacture to ensure the client receives wood they know came from a responsibly-managed forest. We track our FSC lumber from log to board, ensuring its separation and labeled FSC status.

Favored by design professionals and consumers alike, the Black Locust Lumber U.S.A. brand has become synonymous with commitment to quality and environmental accountability. In the absence of official grading rules, Black Locust Lumber, U.S.A. developed grades that have set the quality standards and expectations for the Black Locust hardwood market. Our Premium and No.1 Grade decking is manufactured from

domestic, native Black Locust hardwood sourced from the Appalachian range. The average lifetime of our Black Locust exceeds cedar, pressure-treated, and composite decking. As Black Locust weathers, it develops a silvery-gray patina, but Black Locust also has the ability to accept stain or paint. However, for a low-maintenance deck, it is not necessary to stain, paint, or finish Black Locust.

Our Premium and No.1 Grade siding is manufactured from domestic, native Black Locust hardwood sourced from the Appalachian range. The average lifetime of our Black Locust exceeds cedar, pressure-treated, and composite siding. Sustainably harvested, the sourcing of Black Locust does not contribute to the deforestation of tropical rainforests like the production of tropical hardwoods such as ipe, teak, and cumaru. As Black Locust weathers, it develops a silvery-gray patina, but also has the ability to accept stain or paint. However, for low-maintenance siding, it is not necessary to stain, paint, or finish Black Locust. Our Black Locust siding provides a more natural look when compared to vinyl or plastic siding materials. As a custom sawmill, our siding options are available in custom sizes and profiles as well as rain screen and shiplap. If a profile is not in stock, we have the ability to special order knives specific to the design needs of a project. With our knowledge and experience in the industry, we can collaborate with design professionals to ensure that the material is best suited for the application.

INNOVATIVE,PATENT PENDING DESIGN.SPECIFICATIONS AND INSTALLATION

Black Locust permeable pavers are a new patent pending design. With a 3/8” joint and 3.5”x 3.5” blocks, our pavers are ADA compliant.

The Black Locust paver panels (12 blocks each) are attached to a recycled wire mesh that lays flat for easy installation. These paver panels can be laid next to each other for quick and simple installation over large areas. The 3/8” joints are then fastened with filler. Our system will accomodate any filler.

WATER QUALITY AND THE HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

The light color and material properties of Black Locust make it a cooler alternative to concrete and other landscape surfaces and reduce the heat island effect (the difference in temperature between a developed area and a natural area). The addition of plants or moss between the pavers can help further reduce the heat absorbed by the ground covering.

Permeable pavers reduce stormwater runoff and replenish groundwater systems by allowing water percolation between pavers. Pollutants are filtered out during natural bio-filtering processes, improving water quality. In addition, permeability reduces flooding and refreezing.

Page 20: Black Locust Lumber Product Catalogue 2015

Like wood from all tree species, Black Locust is not a “man-made” product. The complex mix of characteristics that distinguish one sample of wood from another can be determined by the genetics of the species. Soil type and climate influence the composition of each individual tree; therefore slight variation in color, grain structure, density, and general appearance can contribute to the character and visual interest of Black Locust. As Black Locust weathers, it develops a silvery-gray patina. The color is a result of natural weathering from exposure to U.V. rays, rain, snow, and oxygen. There is not a known finish to eliminate U.V. deterioration for Black Locust or other wood species. U.V. wood treatments will only delay the natural patina of the wood.

FINISHES

If a finish is desired for a furniture item, such as benches, we recommend using Tung Oil. Although Tung Oil will not completely weatherproof Black Locust, it helps maintain the material’s weather resistance. Tung Oil is a natural, non-toxic finish that serves to highlight the gray patterns and colors in Black Locust. The oil is extracted from the nut of the Tung tree. As Tung Oil soaks into the wood’s pores, it dries with a matte finish. One of Black Locust’s distinct characteristics is its ability to accept stain or paint. In contrast, tropical hardwoods are unable to sustain a different color range due to their oily composition. All new cuts are coated with an end sealer to assist in the prevention of end checking. We recommend using this wax coating on all new cuts made in the field to maintain the life of your Black Locust product.

LAMINATION

Our proprietary lamination process allows us to provide larger pieces of Black Locust in higher quality. We are capable of manufacturing various products such as bar tops, tables, solid benches, and more. Our expert laminators offer years of experience with lamination and produce beautiful products.

PREMIUM GRADE

This grade of lumber comes from the “best of the best” Black Locust. Each individual piece is carefully inspected to ensure premium quality, durability, and appearance. Only the most appealing pieces qualify as Premium Grade. Sound knots 3” in diameter and less, minor mineral streaks, and small bark insertions are admitted to highlight the characteristics of the Black Locust species. Checks less than 1/12th of the board length are also admitted.

NO.1 GRADE

All sound knots are admitted in this grade. All other characteristicsthat do not effect the durability of this product are also admitted—surface checks, mineral streaks, bark insertions, and grub holes. Apopular product, without the premiere price.
